US Airways expanction in Europe is very questionable and wil be very short lived, 2 or 3 seasons for a number of routes which will be low yieding and the cost base of the merger will be increased and routes will be dropped.

Right now this is almost certainly the last season of US airways as an independent route holder.

From now on they will be simply American Airlines.

Wot, no mention of New York?

This significant development doesn't seem to have got a mention...

Aviation Minister launches the Newcastle International Airport Business Park

DATE: 24-02-14

Robert Goodwill MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, has today (Monday 24 February 2014) launched the Newcastle International Airport Business Park during a special visit to Newcastle Airport.

The minister launched the new development with Dave Laws, Newcastle International Airport Chief Executive and Cllr Nick Forbes, Leader of Newcastle City Council, the planning authority for the airport.

Significant areas of land are allocated to the south of the airport for the development, including offices, freight and logistics warehouses and engineering hangers. The project comprises four phases, which collectively have the potential to deliver over 7,000 jobs and a regional GVA of over £300 million.

Phase one of the development consists of 175,000 sq foot of office accommodation, with excellent connectivity links to a global network. It will consist of six new office buildings in attractive surroundings accommodating up to 1,000 people.

The Business Park is a collaboration between Newcastle International Airport and UK Land Estates, one of the leading property companies in the North East, and freeholders to the Team Valley Trading Estate in Gateshead.

As part of the visit the Minister also visited the state-of-the-art Emirates Air Traffic Control Tower, Airport Fire Station and Fire Training Academy. The Minister also got to see the airport’s new Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) system which supports the airport’s primary radar and helps the airport deliver Air Traffic Control services across the region’s airspace.

Speaking at the launch, Aviation Minister Robert Goodwill said: “Newcastle is a key UK airport and vital for the North East economy. This new business park offers an excellent opportunity for regional and international organisations. I applaud the bold ambitions of the Airport Company with this new venture and wish them every success”.

Dave Laws, Chief Executive of Newcastle International Airport, said: “The location of the Newcastle International Airport Business Park is ideal for businesses who will benefit from the excellent connectivity through the airport.

“The location is great not only for aviation related companies, but also professional services, technology and IT, telecommunications and oil and gas / offshore businesses, who can make use of the excellent connectivity on offer. This is a very important development for us and one which we feel will be very popular. Other successful regional airports have been able to diversify their business and we see this scheme as critical in supporting the growth of the airport.

“We are delighted to work with UK Land Estates and our shareholders on this project and the launch today is an exciting first step.”

Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council and the LA7 shareholders, said “We feel that this new development will become an important new component of the region’s development portfolio. The connectivity on offer through the airport opens up many opportunities on a national and international scale and we very much look forward to welcoming organisations to the Newcastle International Airport Business Park.”

Nick Forbes, leader of Newcastle City Council, said “The North East is a great place to live and work and Newcastle Airport provides an important gateway to new business opportunities across the globe. The creation of this new International Business Park at Newcastle Airport is a clear indication of our growing economic confidence and we look forward to welcoming new investors to our city and region - knowing they will benefit from a fantastic location and excellent air, road and rail connections.”

Knight Frank has been appointed as agents for the Business Park, and have started the process of marketing the opportunities.

The development is being overseen by a steering group comprising Newcastle International Airport, UK Land Estates, Newcastle City Council, the Homes and Communities Agency and the North Eastern LEP.

Changing planes at any of the New York airports is as much of a nightmare as changing at the London ones. There is, though, no shortage of hub airports elsewhere in North America that can get one to one's destination with a lot less hassle. A direct service to one of them would be far preferable.

However, it's not going to happen from Newcastle any time soon.

SWBKCB

You are, in fact, wrong about no mention being made by the Aviation Minister of a Newcastle - USA air link. I quote below, what he is reported to have said:

" The Aviation Minister welcomed the development and said he hoped Newcastle Airport succeeded in its goal to operate transatlantic flights to the US East Coast "

Just want to get the facts correct.

You used to work for NCL and you have some anecdotal evidence of it. You cannot possibly know how happy EK are with the performance. Capacity and yield are completely unrelated.

Jamesair - no mention of 'that place' in my post except in the header. What happened was the Minister was discussing something of significance to NCL and then the conversation got dragged round to Transatlantic links....

BTW, he said:

“If you look at flights to Dubai you can see what can be done without Government funding. That successful route has been made without the need to use taxpayers’ money to subsidise it. I know that there has been some lobbying about, say, relaxing the air passenger duty here. The worry is that that could create a churn where the flights are only here until that subsidy goes. We have not been persuaded by the arguments so far. The Dubai flights are very well subscribed flights, the case can be made (to the operators) I think for flights into New Jersey or wherever in America.”
`

There you go NY and EK in one post!

Take it nobodies got any views on the business park? (three deer roaming on the planned site yesterday!)

I think the Business Park is a good idea and seems to fit with the current trend around airports and should eventually bring more business to the city/airport i.e. Manchester.

Presumably the developer feels able to fill the offices with tenants. The hangar development for freight and engineering seems a good plan too.

Don't rise to it 10D. Great to see expansion happening again after what's been a quiet few year. Growth for the airport and more jobs for the region is welcomed news.

Brussels starting (again) next week
Easy jet on LGW
EI expansion

Well, several times I've heard of people getting emails for cheap upgrades to business class £350/400 ow. If the seats were selling so well up front there would be no need to do this.

EK telling tales to its staff? No never, airlines are always open, honest and transparent with their employees and suppliers. Oh wait....

Quite a lot of long haul airlines offer special upgrades at cheaper prices. Naturally, if the high end cabins aren't full they'll offer these. More money is better than no money! And they can charge the higher taxes for fuel surcharges etc.

Just because these are available and the aircraft isn't full doesn't mean the route isn't profitable. It's simple economics and a good way to improve revenue on a flight!!

TCX A321 Will they or wont they? #winglets

Ive just booked for SSH May 28th and have booked extra leg room and on checking seat plan showing 220 pax with back 4 rows blocked out as expected however new aircraft have 215 pax seats so will the 2 based units be sharklets or god forbid NIKO and her pals? I for one will miss good old FCLK as she has taken me to SSH for the last 5 years!

I believe the current plan is that the current sharklet A321's will be fitted with an extra 5 seats before the start of the summer season to bring them in line with the existing A321s. This is to make it easier with regards to aircraft swaps throughout the summer.

The A321s which are yet to be delivered will already be fitted with 220 seats.

The company have recently confirmed to its staff that NCL will indeed have 2 brand new A321s based there for summer 14.

I thought the 215 seats was so TCX could offer more legroom (apparently 30" or 31" pitch) in line with their current commitment to offer a better product, have they changed their minds about this?
