Whilst I sympathise with your pax and appreciate it was not ideal did you arrive just before the PIA? If so the airport would obviously prefer to put the widebody on the airbridge?

Only problems so far today up at LBA are for Eastern Airways services.

The morning inbound from Teeside was cancelled due to the runway up there been closed because of Ice & Snow not been cleared again. This has affected the Southampton rotation which is normally operated by the MME based aircraft. So now the flight is been operated by an Newcastle based aircraft instead

Also the early Aberdeen service was cancelled, but everything else seems to be operating as scheduled according to the LBA arrivals and departure boards.

Has anybody else noticed a lack of urgency on the part of LBIA when it comes to dealing with snow and ice ? These days it seems it actually has to have been snowing for some time before the vehicles are sent out. Yesterday afternoon, it was getting dark, the paved surfaces were beginning to freeze, flights were approaching arrival and departure times and only then were the sprayers sent out to the runways and taxiways. Too late ladies and gents. I thought the idea was prevention rather than clearance. Correct me if I'm wrong. And the stands were a disgrace. Covered with snow, slush and ice. Terrible to walk on. The Airside Safety Unit, to be fair, did appear with some anti-ice pearls but again, only when the movements were happening. Not before. Reactive rather than proactive.

When ATC more or less ran the show, the Watch Supervisor would perform a surface inspection and if necessary give word for the brushes and sprayers to be sent out. And out they came promptly. Nowadays, that sense of urgency seems to have been lost.

Mooncrest can't agree. I think LBA have coped well in the conditions and managed to get things moving far quicker than some of our competitors who have failed miserably. DTV closed for 3 days and Manchester closed far more often than it should have been for an 'International' airport.

Well Said Flybar

"When ATC more or less ran the show, the Watch Supervisor would perform a surface inspection and if necessary give word for the brushes and sprayers to be sent out. And out they came promptly. Nowadays, that sense of urgency seems to have been lost. "

1/ ATC never ran the show they were and are an important part of a team effort.
2/ The Ops team do exactly as you say ATC did above and unlike ATC are trained, tested, monitored in their competency to complete what after all is not an ATC function but an Airfield operations function.
3/ The intricacies of resourcing a regional airport in the current economic climate are obviously not your strong point. As it is not with the rest of the nation. Unless the SLF is prepared to cough up another few squid on all tickets all year to allow for shiny brand new snow kit and staff standing around for 50 weeks doing nothing else, we will always play catch up.

SAFETY is the number ONE priority in this time of non standard ops, that is after all is part time job.

The team at Leeds have and will continue to do a fantastic job and attempt to keep all the plates spinning( of which there are many) as the dropping of one is not an option.

Well the plates are spinning today!!

A very shrewed move by Ryanair to start their new services in spring, this must be costing Jet2 a small fortune in de-ice and re de-ice aswel as playing the friendly airline card and not cancelling flights.

If we are moving into a global cooling phase, will the Goverment pay airline to fly aircraft to heat up the OZ layer??????????? thought not and you are banned from buying a 4x4 what a joke of a country we have become

Jet2 do not need to re de-ice the aircraft as they are not de-iced until fully ready for departure and the runway is open.

How is it costing Jet2 a fortune to NOT cancel flights? The only extra cost is the LRV's which to be honest a lot of people don't even bother with and the extra staff to keep ground ops/crew going. It would cost them a lot more if they were ryanair, but as Jet2 treat their passengers as they should be treated, i.e putting them in hotels/coaching to another flight etc then a delay of a few hours is the obvious option. Jet2 even put on extra flights to relieve the backlog of passengers and put 757s on 737 routes. Hats off to everyone at LBA over the past weeks. Everyone has worked together extremely well, despite being one, if not the worst affected airport.

Righthand

I think you've answered the previous posters question, ie all that you said is very good by Jet2 but must cost alot of money, i am sure it will be remembered by the punters when they have a choice between Jet2 and Ryanair in the Summer when the snow has melted

I imagine they are having the same problems with the ice that has turned many local roads into skating rinks.

ATC were reporting braking action as poor, which has since improved to medium/good, but with a 20% contamination of slush/ice on the runway. Not pleasant!

Flight planned direct with a flight time of 8h25m don,t get too excited though quite a light load and unusually forecast wind over that route was calm.Forecast take off weight was over 23tonne below the aircrafts max structural so achievable even off LBAs runway given present low temperatures. The long gone 762s with the big engines BYAA/B were the only certain bets for LBAs challenging runway.VBR Stampe

Dont get to excited though!!!!
whats that supposed to mean!!!!!
If an A330 can take off on a direct flight to Barbados with 332 pax and 42 tons of fuel i would imagine that the 767 is equally capable....LBA is very capable at coping with these types of aircraft.....
