What a silly comment- Lots of airports outside London sustain US flights:

BHX, BFS, BRS, EDI, GLA, MAN...

With Manchester on Leeds' doorstep, there just is not room for US capacity from Leeds.

Why not? More Americans will have heard of York and Yorkshire than Manchester so it would make sense to operate a direct flight to where they want to be. Over 100,000 passengers travel from Yorkshire to other regions to fly to New York, so the markets already there. Add that plus a good deal with Bridgepoint, promised airbridge, quick turn around, why not? Other airlines are already realising that there's more to the North than Manchester.

Jet2 Madeira

Budget airline Jet2 is to start a new service to Madeira from Manchester Airport. The flights to Funchal will operate every Monday during summer 2010 with fares from £49.99 one way including taxes.
A spokesman for the airline said, ‘Madeira is a stunning island and an absolutely fantastic summer holiday destination. I am sure it will be extremely popular with our customers in the North West and beyond

Why cant Jet2 start this route from Leeds, have they forgotten where their main base is!!!!!!

Is not EDI on GLA's doorstep?

Main Base?

Would that be the very same main base that the management of LBA invited Ryanair to come and duplicate a load of Jet2's routes....
maybe thats the answer you are looking for?

Do the math and tell me how many routes are duplicated at Manchester. Jet2 should have no problem holding their own at LBA, at least that is unless they are propping up their other bases on the back of profits from LBA.

Over 100,000 passengers travel from Yorkshire to other regions to fly to New York, so the markets already there.
Is it not freight that is a big contribution to yields on these long-haul routes, plus a high number of people paying premium fares on a regular basis i.e. business pax?

It would be interesting to see if LBA can get any more long-haul routes to compliment the Islamabad one. Dubai would be good too, though as i say i think it takes more than looking at that quote of 100,000 to determine whether a route such as this would work or not. How many of those are regular high fare paying pax? etc..

With Leeds been the second largest Financial City outside of London, then i guess that is where you would find a large amount of high fare paying pax's, But the quote for 100'000 potential LBA pax's travelling to other airports should be enough to encourage long haul routes not only to the States, but to other long distance destinations too, Maybe PIA will surprise us with an alternative to their already very well established ISB flights...

I am intrigued as to what routes you would expect PK to start other than to Pakistan; it took a heck of a long time for them to be granted 5th freedom rights out of MAN and if you are thinking that they'd start US services ex-LBA, I am tempted to say the UK government may well turn round and say "Sorry folks...we gave you some limited rights out of MAN and you've barely attracted pax onto them. We cannot see why we should grant more rights to you when you are not utilising your current ones to the best advantage"

Leeds USA

I would have thought a LBA to Newark (Nyc) would be a viable route, similar to Bristol with Continental. Leeds is after all at the centre of huge catchment area, greater than all of Scotland. Edinburgh alone has 2 x daily Continental flights at present. Granted Edinburgh draws in a lot of tourist traffic from the States, but I would have thought Leeds would also attract inbound traffic too. We have friends from New York who for the last three years have flown into Heathrow, hired a car, driven through England visiting friends etc and ended up at Edinburgh dropping the car off for no extra charge and flying CO back to Newark. They love it.
Edinburgh is a wealthy city, a financial centre, but so is Leeds and I would think a transatlantic link would work well.

Is'nt the Transatlantic market contracting ? Delta have just pulled MAN-NYC. (Do DL operate ex-EDI anymore ?).

Does'nt bode well for any LBA services to the US !

Transtlantic from the regions

It's true. As long as MAN struggles to retain, let alone grow its long-haul traffic there is little point in other regionals even trying. For this reason I can't see the business case in BHX's runway extension. And if LBA were to get an New York service the viability of this and also MANs would be fragile. The inevitable outcome of regional market share wars in long haul is fragementation and dilution of yields, convincing airlines that they'll only ever make a profit at Heathrow. We have to face up to the fact that England is a small country in terms of global air route distances. For incoming travellers the capital is the natural place to fly into, and then travel domestically if required. It has a huge choice of carriers and routes, too. All UK regions have an image problem (they are not London) and therefore London will always be where they fly to.

I'm not sure where this regularly repeated claim for Leeds to be the UK's second financial city comes from, but more pertinently, have you noticed what's happened to the Finance and Banking industry over the last couple of years??

Lba-dxb-isb

Have heard a little rumour that PIA is interested in operating from LBA to ISB via DXB. Anyone else got any info?

They alreay have a good route network from DXB to all the major cites in Pakistan so it would make sense.
