Closed domestic routes

Northern Ireland counts as domestice as it is part of the UK so many more can be added to the list -

BHD - LCY (Scot/Air France)
BHD - Inverness
BFS - Ltn (most recent closure was the move by EZ to BFS)
BFS - IOM
BFS - Birm, Man etc (baby moving to BFS)

etc. etc.

but of course that seems to be the pattern in the airline business - rountes and airlines come and go - just look at how many have operated BHD-Stansted over the years- Jersey European, now flyBe; Air Berlin; Ryanair and now bmibaby

Skipness, there has always been overcapacity on Domestic routes but what's happening with domestic at the moment is airlines, like BD realising that reducing capacity will improve yield (supply v demand). Flying EMB145 is probably a higher per seat cost but less capacity means they can increase prices.

Also, airlines have realised recently that with a more rationalised fleet post recession there are more lucrative opportunities in Europe, hence the only way they can serve these markets is to pull off or reduce non profitable domestic markets.

Phew, that's the economics over.

It's WAY higher and a waste of a LHR slot on a Barbie jet versus an A380.

bmi to use LH A380

ATW reports today that LH will paint one of its 4 A380 to be delivered this year in the "whale" bmi colour scheme following bmi joining its Atlantic++ program later this year. The aircraft will be part of the program to re launch services to the US in 2012 by bmi and the build up to the London Olympics in 2012.

The aircraft will be operated by LH flight deck but the cabin crew will be from bmi airbus fleet.

Sounds like a brilliant idea to me! lol That'd get us noticed...first British airline to operate the 380 and what a way to launch transatlantic, that'd put BA's nose right out of joint! Shame it's only a joke

Yeah bril idea - oh hang on though we are talking about BMI - so first there would be a departure delay...followed by an extended departure delay - with pax being not informed of reasons (even in the lounge) - followed by an equipment change - down to Embraer most likely - and then just flight cancelled.....just as well its an April Fool on the A380 but not the rest of above.....

Oh 'Nivsy' think you've had a little problem sometime then? lol
Just FYI, the new CAA punctuality stats are out and bmi British Midland is (again) the most punctual British airline at Heathrow...by quite a long way, and also the 6th most punctual British airline overall, which isn't bad when you have London Heathrow to contend with, oh and love em or hate those pesky Embraers...bmi Regional is the UK's most punctual airline...for the sixth consecutive year.

Punctuality

I'm not quite sure whose propaganda you've been listening to, but here's the 2010 punctuality league table for UK domestic flights, as taken from the CAA raw data. Although bmi regional is undoubtedly top, bmi itself is 11th (not sixth) and its punctuality isn't really all that much better than either BA (MAN, GLA, EDI, ABZ, NCL) or Aer Lingus (BFS) as the domestic operators at Heathrow.

Just keep drinking the nice blue stuff that they provide in the canteen at Donington Hall.....

Position Airline Flights % on time Avg delay (minutes)
1 BMI REGIONAL 10,858 90.9% 6.3
2 EASTERN AIRWAYS 5,691 89.2% 8.3
3 CITY JET 9,062 88.8% 7.1
4 AURIGNY 5,675 86.8% 11.1
5 LOGANAIR 14,871 86.4% 10.2
6 RYANAIR 5,505 85.7% 9.1
7 AER ARANN 1,740 84.7% 10.5
8 MANX2 553 82.8% 11.6
9 FLYBE 91,928 82.7% 12.2
10 AIR SOUTHWEST 5,460 82.2% 10.1
11 BMI BRITISH MIDLAND 34,653 81.5% 10.0
12 BA CITYFLYER 11,178 81.3% 11.6
13 AER LINGUS 2,422 79.4% 11.6
14 BRITISH AIRWAYS 63,553 79.0% 12.1
15 BMIBABY 6,979 78.3% 14.7
16 EASYJET 50,156 71.0% 18.3

These figures are just statistics.

BMI regional fly to regional airports with tiny planes, it figures that they will be more punctual. They have less pax to get off and on.

It would also make sense that Ryanair are more puntual than BMI again because they often fly from secondary airports (in the case of PIK) where no one else operates. They also operate the 1 aircraft type and fly only to europe.

No airline above BMI operate into LHR therefore you would expect them to be more puntual.

Also it figures BMI are more puntual than BA as they operate less aircraft and routes, less things to cause delays.

No excuse for Easyjet though :-)

Not all Bmi regional flights operate to/from "regional" airports and just because they operate smaller aircraft does not necessarily mean they are quicker to turnround. It can take more staff to board an Embraer than an Airbus depending on the set-up of the stand! You also have the added job of removing and tagging the larger items of handbaggage which would normally be Ok. The fact that BD operate less flights then BA does not make a difference as it is a statistical average, the size of the operation makes no difference.

Babies new Baby logo applied to their ex Thompson (I believe) 737....

Don't like it myself and no doubt cost a fortune to design... I go with his left hand and give it a thumbs down.

still looks like a Red Ant to me......

bmibaby Tail

Babies new Baby logo applied to their ex Thompson (I believe) 737....
Probably more suitable for the bmbiaby thread, but I like it! I think this ex-ThoMSon Airways 733 is G-THOL to be G-TOYL?

However every aircraft will have a different tail design, with 'Tiny' posing or doing something different on each one. So far this is the third one since the first one rolled out i believe well over a year ago!!!!!!
