The target pax numbers announced at the launch were 28,000 to the end of the Summer timetable. 188 days from Apr 2nd to 26th October, requiring a mean of 149 pax per day, 1043 per week. April to July had 15,154 against a target of 18,021. Numbers are continuing to grow.
The only evidence I have of feeding long-range is anecdotal, and it is good. Just as important is developing the market with repeat business, and that too is kicking in.
How will it go? I don't know. What is interesting is that MSE is now the KLM diversion field for LHR, and they've started to use it for training.

I was recently reading that CWL had as many as 10,000 KLM punters in a month and they have three F70 rotations per day, 21 rotations a week I believe, and the CWL must have been operating for something like 20 years.

Even I was laughing at an AMS/MSE/AMS route but with just 2 rotations per day, is it 12 or 14 rotations per week, I'd suggest that in the first few months of start-up, taking CWL as a comparison, the figures ain't that bad at all.

Parkway Station

BBC News - Plans for Manston Airport railway station drawn up

Plans for a railway station and improved road access near Manston Airport in Kent have been drawn up.

The proposals, part of the Manston Green housing development, would see about 800 homes built and a parkway station on land east of the airport.

The proposals are being led by private investment fund Cogent Land LLP. The land is currently owned by a farmer.

The plans come six months after the first flight from Manston to Amsterdam took off.

Charles Buchanan, the airport's chief executive, said a shuttle bus service would run from the railway station to the airport.

"We totally support a parkway station," he said.

"It will improve access for the area, it will be an engine for the regeneration of the local economy and it will also provide a simple way to get to and from the airport."

'40-year vision'
Kevin Ashman, spokesman for Cogent Land LLP, said under the plans, the A256 would be extended from the Lord of the Manor roundabout up to Manston Road, and that a school would be built.

A public exhibition is being planned for later this month and a planning application is due to be submitted before the end of the year.

In July, Manston Airport revealed its 40-year vision as part of its submission to the government commission looking at airport expansion in the South East.

Between 2015 and 2025, Manston says it could be handling five million passengers a year and 400,000 tonnes of freight.

It also proposes becoming a principal "diversion" airport for Gatwick and Heathrow while new capacity is being built.

In the longer term, it wants to attract more business and leisure traffic from low-cost carriers from Africa, Europe and Asia.

KLM Passenger figures 'up'

A spokesman from the Airport said that specific figures were unavailable, but sales are now at the level expected by both KLM and Manston.

There are currently 80 people flying each way each day between Manston and a hub in Amsterdam. Flybe couldn't make Belfast, Edinburgh or Manchester work. There are no other schdduled passenger routes.

Perhaps before talking about a dedicated train station and laying new track, airport management could improve upon the existing hourly bus service ?

Newmarket Air Holidays 2014 programme sees a total of 5 charter departures so far.

1st June to Verona
14th June to Naples
22nd June to Verona
1st September to Dubrovnik
6th October to Porto

Flights are operated by Lithuanian carrier Small Planet Airlines.

In my opinion, the local catchment area may well support an increased holiday charter offer in the next future with flights to likes of Palma or Dalaman.

Train station

I've heard it all now . Someone is willing to invest an immense amount of money to create the infrastructure for a whole railstation of the back of one air route serving 80 people a day? I mean it's total madness surely? Is it April fools again already? Even a shuttle bus being laid on for the 3 flights a day seems like overkill to me. Honestly i'm staggered . I think what sums it up is the picture chosen for Manston on Wiki is of a war memorial on a village green .

Rivet - the Amsterdam route had 78 people each way (rounded it to 80) so 156 people flying to / from MSE. Unlike most other routes, KLM operate just 2 round trips each day - 2 arrivals and 2 departures, instead of 3 round trips.

There is a definite need for a bus between Manston airport and a local train station as Ramsgate station is a fair walk from Ramsgate town centre.

KLM stats

The UK CAA figures for August show 4855 pax on the Amsterdam Manston route, 156 a day. Sounds reasonable for a new route. I know from sources at KLM that any new route is expected to take at least a year to bed in, route financials are planned accordingly. I would be very surprised if these pax numbers are not in line with KLM expectations.

September figures will not be published until mid October.

KLM needs all the feed traffic it can get from UK and Ireland, it's fighting the Gulf carriers variously at LHR, BHX, MAN, NCL, GLA and DUB, and is fighting EZY at a host of other airports in UK on short haul to AMS. Emirates only began serving AMS/DXB in 2010 and are now at a daily 380 and 777. Further eroding KLM long haul business to the east and south.

Expect to see more not less of KLM in the UK regions for those reasons. Their target is usually 3 or 4 rotations a day on short haul to AMS to maximise connecting links. They calculate that a route takes 3-4 years to reach that level of maturity.

No - somebody wants to build a housing estate near the airport and to sweeten the deal they say they will build a railway station which will also serve the airport.

Local authority swoon...

Thanet Parkway station is for the whole area, and will be 2 platforms alongside existing track. No new track is necessary. It will be of benefit to the airport.

So how significantly nearer to the airport shall this Thanet Parkway Station be when compared against the existing Minster Railway Station which is all of some 3.2 miles from the airport?

“I fear nothing at all from Lydd; they are pitching at a particular market. We’re only interested in serious airlines doing serious business.” says the CEO. Is it just me, or does anyone else read that as an arrogant refusal to consider that the next Big Thing in European aviation might come from an innovative start-up? What annual loss does an airline have to suffer to be considered "serious" ?
