Manston would probably be a better fit for Stobart than Southend as well. More cargo opportunities and possibilities to increase their multimodal strategy with Dover and Folkstone nearby as well.

Anyone have any info IF/when the hangar will be up and running to receive the proposed MD80 maintenance. Last rumour I heard was September. Is this still likely?
I'll keep you informed

Manston welcomes private jet operation

s
A private jet operator that counts royalty, presidents and other high-fliers has chosen Kent International Airport at Manston as its new UK home. Gainjet Aviation has its main headquarters in Athens, Greece, but will now base its UK sales team at Manston. They will charter the jets, which are based around the globe, from the airport.

Three aircraft – a Gulfstream 200 with 10 passenger seats, a Gulfstream 550 capable of transatlantic flight and a McDonnell Douglas MD83 VIP with 40 seats plus a bedroom onboard – will be hangared at the airport.

Gainjet recently chartered its Boeing 757 executive airliner for Manchester United and managed all five flights of the Premier League champions’ pre-season tour of Asia.

The company considered Heathrow and Gatwick as a base but chose KIA thanks to the ease of operating its planes at the airport and the results of its sales team, who live locally.

Sales team members Deborah Knips and Natalie Aylett persuaded the Athens management to make the UK operation permanent. Deborah said: “Locating us at the airport makes perfect sense for Gainjet. It ensures we can be on hand to assist crew and customers, and because we are on call 24/7 every other week we can be close to home as well as the office. The move has gone really well and we now feel much closer to our customers and colleagues by being part of the day-to-day operations at Manston.”

Captain Ramsey Shaban, chief executive of Gainjet in Athens, said: “We were confident that the team would prove themselves and the results have been tremendous.

“The next step in our UK presence was to find suitable accommodation, ideally close to an airport. Kent International was just what we were looking for. Looking ahead, it is likely that we will need to grow the team in the near future.”

Matt Clarke, chief executive of Kent International Airport, said: “We have seen a significant rise in the level of interest by private charter and business jet operators and we are delighted that Gainjet has moved in.

“From an operational point of view, Kent International Airport has a number of advantages over other airports for the private aircraft operators around the South East, and this is increasingly being recognised by operators such as Gainjet.”

Gainjet also has operations in Paris, Dubai, Sharjah and Amman.

OK, so gainjet isn't exactly a major passenger carrier but it is another small step in the right direction.

rumour

This rumour has indeed been doing the rounds. Maybe just because flybe have been using Manston for crew training lately with both the Embraer 190 and the Dash 8.

If they want to increase their "multimodal strategy", then SEN's proximity to Tilbury trumps Dover and / or Folkestone.

The August monthly report:

August was another strong month for Kent with 3,136 tonnes handled, up 190% on the year prior. The last five months were 82% ahead of the same period in 2008.

Any ideas if these higher cargo figures are here for the long term?

Flybe

All new routes to June 2010 have been finalised, but no new routes at Manston.

Worryingly, Manston or Kent Intl fails to appear at all on Flybe's website for booking any flights. Other Jersey routes, such as Gatwick, are bookable to June 2010.

Have Flybe flown?

Wasn't the Jersey-Manston route a summer one only?
I would think it will return next year.

Last week I e-mailed Flybe about the Jersey route and asked if there's likely to be any new services and as expected they're not giving too much away. Here's the reply:

We wont know until the new timetable is released in November 09 if this route will be listed.

Kind Regards

Flybe

Only a small selection of Flybe’s routes from Jersey have yet been released for next summer. As cited, the full schedule will be released as usual in late November. Manston already appears to be available to reserve on a number of tour operator websites for next summer.

Flightless - no. There are cargo flights and 'one-off' charters with Newmarket Holidays

If Flybe didn't return then as things stand, then Manston would be left without regular passenger flights

Most airlines, especially those who do specific "one off - marginal yeild flights" from regional airports such as Manston will not reveal their Summer routes until Jan or Feb 2010.
Although there's nothing else to attract regular passenger flights from Manston, I strongly suspect that Flybe will be there to run the blue rinse brigade to Jersey in the Summer.

HOLIDAY package flights to Italy, Austria, Croatia, Portugal and Malta will operate from Kent International Airport at Manston in 2010.
The charter trips begin in May and will again be operated by Newmarket Holidays whose representative Alison Keeble said: “We had another good year at Manston and were pleasantly surprised by how demand held up strongly despite the recession."

Have Flybe flown?

Not according to the jerseytravel website where you can book a flight through them with Flybe (starts 15th May next year.) Strangely you can't book direct with Flybe yet.

A little bird tells me that AvMan has got CAA approval for maintenance work, and that the deserts are being scoured for suitable MD80s to be overhauled for a leasing company with several keen clients.

The September Infratil monthly report for Manston.

KIA processed 3,086 tonnes of freight during September, more than double the volume handled during the same month last year. For the half year cargo volumes were 16,331 tonnes, an increase of 89% on the pcp. Over September British Airways used the Airport for crew training for their newly acquired Airbus 318 aircraft soon to be operating flights from London to New York.
