"ATC,cleaners, check-in, management, caterers and security to name a few not forgetting loaders and a push back man and tug"
Check in and security, yes, plus one person in the airside cafe. The rest are all there anyway. VLM operated without pushback: will Flybe?
Obviously the airport and Flybe are talking about more routes.

What you are all talking about are crumbs. Even a moderately successful airport like Luton handles more airliners in 1 hour than Manston handles in a month. This must be very obvious to Manston Management.
With airports like Stansted and Gatwick losing flights left right and centre there are plenty of slots at these airports now.
Manston could best be described as an overflow airport except that even when there was a slot shortage at the major London airports airlines still stayed away. This has probably more to do with location, location, location.

the falling pound will be the same as you spend in the Uk but you wont have to convert it to euros or dollars, i am sure this was the point !
the movement of one flybe a/c will not mean extra staff, so £2000 squid willl be extra revenue and hopefully this will lead to more movements and hence more staff etc etc.
you seem to have caught the catflap ' were all doomed ' desease.
onwards and upwards

I haven't read the Southend thread but are we sure that Stobrts want the airport for air freight? COuld they just want it as a lorry park, and road haulage place?
Its difficult for hauliers to find land flor lorries these days!

The answer is no to both your suggestions.
They will look to see how airfreight can be added to their road haulage business, but in the area of urgent, high value shipments and not bulk freight. They hope to build a large distribution depot on the site of the new Thames Gateway Port complex, which is due to open in 2010. There would be no point in building such a facility at SEN.
Their main effort will be aimed at attracting scheduled and charter passenger airlines, initially once the rail station is open next Autumn but more so when/if the runway extension is completed in 2011.

Hi all
Being ignorant in the way these things work. What happens to the passengers, do they sit it out onboard until the conditions improve or are they allowed into the terminal building or what?

yer, thanks for looking after us guys, bet it has been a while since you had 5 x ba planes parked at the terminal at the same time!
your welcome, just give us a bit more notice next time it was a pretty sight with an apron full of BA tail planes
ps (note for gatwick ground handling)
it took mse 1hr 30 mins to de-ice the runway, one full length taxiway and an apron this morning, just in time for the first clx 747-4

A news piece by Kent Online:
BA aircraft forced to land at Manston
by Peter Barnett
Five British Airways passenger aircraft unable to land at Gatwick due to the closure of its runway were diverted to Kent International Airport, at Manston, on Thursday.
Unexpected icy weather conditions at the UK’s second busiest airport forced the closure of its only runway during the peak morning rush.
Airborne aircraft expecting to land were diverted to alternative destinations including three international and two domestic flights that touched down at Kent International.
