well it looks like the NMBYs in ramsgate and minster have got their way.
Why? Did they put Manston in the location where it is that make it a commercially unsuitable airport?

I don't think Dodgy Dave is really backing Boris' lunatic proposal. He's becoming aware that only LHR can provide the hub that Britain needs......

Reading that UPS is to buy TNT set me wondering whether Manston might be a useful base for UPS in the UK?

Quite possibly, but what I had in mind was the possibility of UPS buying Manston and using it as a dedicated facility, much like Worldport.

I think you will find it's more to do with the commercially unsuitable owners.

They didn't. It was set up as a military airfield. No commercial rationale required.

Much the same as it was stupid of HM The Queen to build her Windsor Castle off the end of the London Heathrow runway(s).

I believe the development on Manston was substantially based on relations (or lack thereof) with Germany

Manston

But sadly a little too close to Germany to be of use 72 years ago. The locals renamed the airfield Manston-in-the-Dust for obvious reasons...

Hoping to make a trip to Manston soon. Can someone tell me if the terminal is open to the public on days when there are no passenger flights? If it is what time does it open and close each day?

Any news / rumours on potential new owners & what the future might hold for MSE?
Sadly, it all seems pretty quiet over there at the moment

Can any local Manston supporter help me out?

I will be in Ramsgate on Saturday via the high speed rail link and was hoping to go to Manston Airport. Looking at the online bus timetable for the 38 bus there is an hourly service on Saturdays that starts at 10:05 but finishes at 14:05. The last Saturday bus of the day from the airport leaves at 13:43. I can’t get my head around this. Why would locals conditions dictate that an hourly service ends so early?

It looks like I might not get to Manston after all.

get a cab from the station - they are not expensive here I guesstimate £4 one way - then call for a return from the airport terminal - no buses come within a mile after that schedule ends for the day

In most cases that bus serves the schools up towards the Manston end or the occasional shopper...most have cars working up here as it can be quite inaccessable

Thanks Boss Raptor for the info. Never realized that the airport has no regular public transport links even to its nearest town. This must make it harder to persuade inbound passengers to use such an airport as I guess taxi's would not be sitting at the airport waiting for fares.

Anyway I have decided not to go there now as the airport might as well be on the moon despite me being in spitting distance today.

Isn't the lack of airline services a bigger disincentive to inbound passengers??

Chicken and egg situation. Public transport needs airline passengers to run a service while airline passengers would be encouraged to use public transport if it was there. As there is neither at Manston apart from the odd random bus and passenger flight what comes first?

It was similar at MME a while back, just one bus service to Middlesbrough, nothing to Stockton or Darlington.

Curiously for an airport misnamed "Durham", there is are links to that town either.

Allegedly there is a railway station nearby that no trains stop at.
