Not a major correction, but Menzies only handle bmibaby and bmi regional on the ramp - with bmibaby having their own CSA and dispatch staff, and although bmi charter received a total handling package from Menzies, I think XL are bringing all of their flights in-house to be operated by XL Airways for S08, and these flights I'd presume will be handled by their current handling agent Servisair.

Menzies, as you say, handle both front of house and ramp for Thomas Cook Airlines, easyJet, Eastern Airways and Manx2, and they are growing all the time. They also do cargo handling for quite a few airlines. Servisair have Ryanair, Thomsonfly, First Choice, XL, Air Malta, Onur Air, Spanair, Air Europa, Futura and one or two airlines that fly in once a week.

FR 6th A/C

Any ideas on increased frequencies and new routes as a result of the 6th FR a/c, and also the 7th as well?

Thanks for any responses

FR 6th ac

Sam-ema

When I looked at the situation some weeks ago the 6th ac was fully utilised by the existing route structure, so there I don't think there are any more to come unless there are more aircraft or outbased operations.

As I remember the sixth ac is utilised by:

BHD - increasing to twice daily (currently 1 per day)
ORK - becomes daily (currently 4? per week)
A number of seasonal routes are re-introduced(AHO FNI EGC RMI come to mind)
Some frequencies have minor changes - can't remenber which but I recall CCF increases from current 2/wk.

Also it has been noted that DUB goes 4 daily and there are some increases on GRO but these only appear to be short term increases - DUB is back to 3/wk in the summer in the schedules at the moment.

Around this time 19 years ago 08/01/89 BMA 737-300 crashed @ Kegworth.
Everlasting memories, obviously the engine fire, but particularly the noise coming out of it, at the time I was convinced it was the evening ATP from LHR, surely
such a noise couldn't come from a jet engine. And a Fire Engine hurtling (and I mean hurtling) round the road by the Black Horse Pub
Spare a passing thought for all involved.

sorry to be picky Mr Angry Sir, but it was a 737-400 series and not a 300 series. My dad was a member of the emergency services there that night and said that he couldnt believe the wreckage was actually a plane. Scary stuff really.

Anyway, time to lighten the mood. Any further developments from the airport????? How are the Sterling routes doing????? they seem strong. Any further info on any terminal expansion apart from a covered walkway of the interchange all the way round to departures???

Regards

Stu

Sterling

Stu

Re "How are the Sterling routes doing????? "

CAA stats for November show grim reading but of course it was the first full month of operations and of course winter.

CPH 2401 pax
OSL 1433 pax
ARN 1518 pax

I have not got the timetable for November but based on Jan/Feb, I estimate CPH had 36 (or 34) rotations which equals 67 (71) per flight, Oslo 26 rotations which = 55 per flight and Stockholm 26 rotations =
58 per flight.

They must be fairly confident of CPH as it is showing Mo-Fr in the
summer.

I am not surprised at Oslo but thought Stockholm would be better as
it is the only flight from the Midlands (Mind you so is Oslo).

Still eagerly awaiting a return of KLM to the AMS route.

With it looking increasingly likely that Alitalia will be joining the growing AF/KLM stable (which now includes VLM/KLM Cityhopper/CityJet/Air France and KLM) added to that the strong SkyTeam partners with Northwest and Delta, to have EMA linked in to this global network must surely be a priority.

The chances on a Oneworld hub link are minimal or nil, and a Star Alliance seems unlikely as Lufty seem very BHX-centric.

Here's hoping the KLM Cityhopper F50s will be bck at EMA sometime in the next 12 months.

You have got zero chance of any full service airline coming to EMA for the forseeable future. I cant see any expansion this coming year, just a consolidation year.

our airport has expanded in the wrong area's in some ways and the correct areas in others. Ryanair is great for the users of the airport, but what people want no a days is hub carriers to travel Long Haul. The EMA masterplan stated that they were hoping for routes to the Far East.............. Never Gonna happen. The airport has turned stale under Manchester Airports management. They are concentrating on MAN and thats where any expansion will occur

That's quite a statment UPS!

But EMA already has an additional FR based aircraft on the way, and NB are upping CPH to a daily service in the summer. So no sign of consolidation yet.

the additional FR aircraft is a plus, but with no new routes just covering last summers routes that are returning and 2 extra flights per week to make CPH 6 times weekly isnt much. I am an avid supporter of the airport and having worked there and also used it on no end of occasions, all i want is for the place to develop. The only problem is that airlines are looking nowhere near the regions with the only exceptions made are the Daily CO flights out of BRS and the Daily EK out of NCL, apart from that most airlines concentrate on the primary airports of LHR, LGW, MAN, BHX, GLA, EDI, STN and LTN.

Saying that, i cant believe other airports such as MME and CWL can support 3+ daily services from KLM, while EMA doesnt get a sniff.

My question is 'Is the airport management being negligent to full service carriers????? Simple fact of the matter is the airport needs a hub feeder airline, whether that be Lufty or KLM or Air France

I don't think the management is being negligent towards the full service carriers, don't forget that until the low-cost carriers came to EMA, the airport had a very successful full service route network operated by BMI. It was BMI's decision to create its own low-cost airline to compete with Go/Easyjet and Ryanair that effectively dismantled this network almost overnight.

I agree completely that what EMA needs is more connections to major European hubs, and perhaps KLM or BMI Regional could provide this to AMS and FRA, to link up with their respective alliance partners. The fact is though, that these routes are now only a small part of EMA's business, and the low-cost sector is now so dominant, that it seems that is how it will remain.

Fr @ Bhx!!!!!

As per post on the BHX thread - The new FR routes from BHX have very little overlap with their routes from EMA, so....

1. Could it be, that these were originally planned to operate from EMA ?

2. Could we now see a 'slow down' of FR activities at EMA?

3. Hope Penny & Co. have not 'bitten off, more than they can chew!'

So where is dumdumbrain when we need him?

There are two ways to look at the FR BHX announcement.

Firstly - as stated, many of the routes are not served from EMA, so were any of them destined for EMA?

BUT - as there is very very limited overlap with EMA does this show FR are (at this stage) not trying to canibalise the EMA base?

There certainly seems to have been no public disagreement with EMA suggesting they are "moving" to BHX, it more clearly seems to be FR moving in on BE (and also WW).

It is a shame some of the routes have not been announced from EMA - in fact it seems a while since an FR EMA announcement.

Does anyone know, out of interest, of any issues between FR and EMA?

Interesting that FR have gone on to the Oslo and Stockholm routes out of BHX, both NB routes from EMA - they didn't want a head on fight with NB?

I am glad about this - as some LOCO diversity is good for EMA, but for all that FR get negative comments from some, when you look at the pax numbers in winter these past couple of years, and look at the mid-January departures board, EMA has been enlivened by FR's presence.

I well remeber the days of a few lonely BD DC9s and a couple of BY flights on weekdays in Jan in the past.

So I, for one, am hoping that FR's will continue to grow out of EMA. They have stated the hope to increase to 10 aircraft at BHX - lets hope they increase to 10 at EMA first

December Pax

December's passenger figures show an increase of 16.7% over 2006 at 377,929, bringing the total for 2007 to 5,414,299 which is a very creditable 14.5% increase on '06.

Penny Coates is reported as saying "The challenge is for us to build on this fantastic performance"; with recent events at BHX and the continued reduction in the IT sector, I think this is somewhat of an understatement, with 2008 probably going to show little or no growth.

The greatest proportion of the past year's increase has been due to FR's dramatic expansion of routes from EMA, and I suspect there will be little or nothing from them in the near future with their expansion from the Midlands now likely to be firmly focused at Birmingham.

It has been obvious for years that Easy have no wish to expand at EMA and Baby seem to be just treading water, so I think the best Penny and her colleagues can hope for is a year of consolidation! Perhaps they could turn their attention to the freight side of the airport's business which seems to be in need of some impetus of late?
