Plus, the airport wouldn`t close for baggage handlers to have their break (which is a legal obligation in the case of ATC staff by the way), isn't that the reason they close this service? Good planning!!

You can`t plan for unusually high levels of staff sickness. The two controllers left on duty needed a break. The only way to do this would be to close. The closure was planned in advance to take into account their break as well as expected traffic levels. Everyone was informed and it didn`t cause a problem. People were not available for overtime due to sickness, working hours limitations or other commitments. I don`t understand the problem.

Regards the ATC situation - it's ludicrous. No amount of arse covering from folks 'inside' can cover up for the fact that it's a poor situation, especially as this is probably LBA's busiest ever period. There should be a contingency plan for the contingency plan at this time of year.

If these shortages happened anywhere I've worked, managers heads would roll.

LBA is the laughing stock at the moment. DSA are rubbing their hands with glee.

Unfortunatley there is a shortage of ATC staff and it is only going to get worse. Airports were warned about this over 10 years ago and nothing has been done about it, the old story about sticking your head in the sand and hoping it would go away.

Well, fair play to the bosses at LBA - at least they're addressing the problem:

All those extra people sat waiting for their planes that can't land have to park somewhere, afterall.

When are the plans for the airport going to be released ? seems to be taking a while.

The terminal is poor reminds me of a working mans club (departures) when you compare to the likes of liverpool who are handiling around 5 milllion a year big bright airport plenty of room to move about unlike leeds.

i think that the bosses at leeds bradford have lost the plot, as a passenger i use leeds because its easy but for things to do its a bit poor, could this be why leeds only handell 3 million a year????

Lille was a bit of a daft idea - I'd love to have been party to the inside thinking on this with BMI management. Was there some subsidy deal at the Lille end?

I'm sure BMI could've come up with more realistic destinations for a midday capacity filling rotation. (Toulouse, Berlin, Stockholm, Oslo, Warsaw etc..)

I wonder where the spare Embraer will go during the day end Sept?

EGYPT Jet2

Was just looking on Jet2 Holidays website and Egypt pops up as an destination from LBA. No flights in the system yet but they must be loaded.

Manchester - Sharm El Sheik is loaded in for what looks like a Sun and Tues winter service. Can't see anything available to Egypt from anywhere else though.

Good luck to all LBA Airport employees.
You are the latest airport to experience the slash and burn tactics of one JP.
Get you CV's at the ready to re-apply for your jobs.
Start looking at out-soucing companies as prospective employers.
I wish you luck.
