The summer GVA services are now on sale. 3 per week in Apr/May/Sep/Oct and 4 per week in-between. Additional winter frequencies are additional daily flights on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Feb and Mar. PRG & CDG also have gone on sale for the winter with no material change from last year.

The shake-up begins

Looks like the first tender for the airport will soon be out.

We all know the airport is in a filthy mess and it has been decided that the contract for night cleaning will be open for tender in the near future.
Original night staff are to be located into other departments (hopefully) but no time frame as yet.

Is this the start of things to come?
We will see...... watch this space.

Any news on the terminal expansion or new routes for the winter/next year? It appears to have gone very quiet on the rumour/news front....

To kick things off, I thought Jet2 were supposedly looking at the possibility of Sharm El Sheikh and Paphos/Larnaca? nowt happening there so far...are these no longer an option? also has the possibility of Shaheen died a death??

Personally, I would like Seville and Lisbon from Jet2 ex LBA I think they'd be good additions to their route network...

There's nothing on the Shaheen Air website so I imagine that they won't be coming, at least for now. Maybe UK International will sew up the market for the Sub Continent from North Midlands / Yorkshire.

I haven't heard any rumours either from LS. Who knows? Things have a habit of happening overnight....

Heard from a duty manager at LBA that the airside boarding area is not in the plans for development this winter. Surely this must be a priority! Its absolute carnage boarding at LBA, 4 gates for stands 9-25?!?! - and any flights on stand 12 onwards must be bussed inbound and outbound. Its madness. Why oh why can't they build an extension beyond the cafe to both increase seating capacity, provide some all important retail space and create gates for each stand. Say down to stand 15, then stands 16 -18 can be walked to and the new stands used via bus.

The current set up is causing delays and I'm sure is a safety and security risk. Anyone who knows the walkway set up for stands 9-11 will know how ridiculous it is and there are simply not enough gates and busses to deal with the other stands. I've heard quite a few PAX complaining about the overcrowding in departures, particularly when, for example a 757 goes tech and there's a PAX backlog - many of which have said they will use MAN next time! If Bridgepoint want an airport which "staff and PAX can be proud of" they better change their plans!

Has anyone seen the plans who can shed some more light here?

I think your last sentance may sum up the situation.
Until there is a planning application/official announcement, only those directly involved will know what the reality is. Until then, everything is just speculation/rumour/hearsay/enthusiasm* (delete as appropriate). There are two facts that are in the public domain:

1. Bridgepoint plan to invest 70m over a number of years
2. As per the YEP article earlier in the week they plan to extend the terminal by 1000sq m.

That is all that is evident in news/official articles.
Until there is something official from Bridgepoint, then I think it is better to wait for that to be able to congratulate/dismiss the plans.

Likewise with the Jet2 767 and NYC rumours, the only thing in the public domain is from Dart's statement of accounts..."looking at larger aircraft". I'm missing a few bits of the jigsaw:

1. Official announcement from Dart to it's shareholders
2. Advertisement for crew/engineers
3. Application for route licences with the US authorities

Again unless powers in the inner circle have all this tied up awaiting for the big day for an announcement (perhaps Monday as per Robo's post) , one has to assume it is hearsay until such announcement is made.

Well said, Bombardier. The terminal plans are not yet in the public domain, as far as I am aware, so let the complaining cease until they are. The problems that are glaringly obvious to those of us who share these forums are equally obvious to the LBIA management and Bridgepoint.

Re: 767s, when they came in 20-something years ago their big selling point was that the flight deck was identical to the 757. Has that changed? Surely 75 drivers can easily convert to 76s. Not sure about the Ginger Beers tho....

I realise the plans are not public, but this was a Duty Manager of an airport company, to whom the plans have been shown

Interesting point though; where do you start with a major refurbishment of a terminal at full capacity, without closing the place down for eighteen months. It must be an interesting Critical Path Analysis.

It's gone quiet.

There has been a lot of route announcements from other regionals lately and I can't help thinking - is the terminal situation now delaying new routes beginning? I do think we are now behind when it comes to Polish destinations. Hopefully there is a lot going on behind the scenes, not just with terminal plans, but with route development too? I don't think we can put adding new routes on the back burner. It will be very tough for airport workers and I am sure your depature gate worries have been taken on board. I hope there will be announcements within the next fortnight concerning at least one new route.

When I worked there a number of years back, I always thought it would be a good idea to build a smaller version of T2 at MAN, down where the long stay car parks are. Plenty of space, and it would work really well as the stands are all nice and big down that end.

If they built a new terminal on the l/stay car parks, they could also incorporate a multi story car park into that too, then use the current short stay one for l/stay and make that into a multi-story too.

Once the new building was open, then pull down the other one and extend the stands to make them all the same size, and possibly expand the cargo area to attract more night freight flights - IIRC didn't LBA loose a massive night freight contract to EMA from TNT a number of years back due to lack of 24h ops ???.

A new tower could also be incorporated somewhere too.

I know in the past with the councils running the show, something like this would never have been possible, thats why we ended up with a load of dodgy extensions, but now it could well be.....

If they are not looking at building a new terminal, then how about getting rid of all the offices on the first floor right in the middle of the building, extened the floor accross the check-in hall and make the whole top floor for departures and then re-build the whole bottom floor for arrivals. Outside, make an elevated road that would be on the same level as departures would now be and leave the existing road for arrivals, so there are not 2 lots of traffic using the same road.

I think my talents are being wasted somewhere !!!

That's a bit poor. Can't see that happening at LHR or MAN. Surely there was a spare ATCO at Donny or HUY!

I'd love to be a fly on the wall at the management morning meeting!

There might well be a few spare controllers at DSA or HUY but they wouldn`t be much use at LBA would they. It`s like saying Virgin are short of A340 captains so just stick a 747 pilot on it. Same job, no problem? MAN and LHR will have more controllers and operational positions so in times of staff shortage they will have more controllers available or will just shut down positions or sectors, incurring delays usually of more than the 30 minutes LBA was closed for but not actually closing. Controllers are expensive and take a fair while to train up so no airport will have a load just hanging around to cover all eventualities.

The managers are to blame for the state of the terminal.
There used to be night ops whose main job was to clean the floors every single night and most of the time all night so the place was presentable when it opened for business in the morning.
Then year on year other duties were added to their role including driving buses and baggage handling.
The usual speel comes out when they put in for a regrade.
"it's part of your job development"
Why do we have people in place that cannot see that if you take someone from doing 1 job and make him do a different job, then there's no way on Gods earth that the 1st job can be done to the same standard-if at all.

There used to be at least 4 cleaners per shift during the day then that has been whittled down to 1 airside and 1 landside at best but again they seem ignorant of the fact that if there is noone stood there with a mop or hoover then the place can't clean itself.

They have told night ops to do different tasks and have cut back dramatically on day cleaners yet then state that because "they" are not keeping the place clean then it is going out to contract instead.

As for the terminal development goes, there is nothing down at present for any extra gates but look on the brightside you'll be able to "enjoy" a burger king airside next year.
No doubt it will still close just before tea time like it does now.

and yes ATC shut for half hour again.

The cleaning is now done by contract cleaners; surely if you want to work in night ops you'd rather be doing some operational type work than polishing the floors.

Just exactly how does a manager defend closing the ATC service due to staff shortages! Is that managing the situation! I think not. Its a typical idtiotic situation which is indefensible. The reason it comes up, is that to save money, some buffoon who can manage the department, will also agree to act as short term cover, then, no doubt goes on holiday leaving his department to work out how to manage itself once shortstaffed. You can easily rearrange cover to suit, but the question has to be asked. There has been no changes to the opening hours of LBA since 1998. In that time it has never closed its ATC service. It will have had staff sickness and holidays to cover, including people leaving and time taken to renew these positions. Its another poke in the eye for the word Manage! It is an indefensible position, and no amount of tyring to cover it up with suggestions that other ATC departments have staff hanging about just on the off chance they get caught short in the staffing arrangements is just ludicrous.Clearly the Admiral needs not only a good talking to, but a stiff finger poked in his chest with the words "You are managing this department, start managing". It is best done by talking at the guy, and not letting him answer. Sometimes people need to be told. This is one example of it.And before anyone jumps to defence here, can you imagine if the AirOps department suddenly ran out of baggage staff and had to close the airport while the existing staff had a break? Its not happening is it?In planning your staffing commitments, you would work into it, break times, leave, and busy work periods, then you would introduce a contingency plan to account for the aviations fluid situations. The man at the top would step in only, and if, the last resort is to close for a shortwhile as a situation develops during the day. However, if he had planned to go on holiday, what preventative measures did he put in place before going?Or was the holiday so short a notice he found himeslf waking up in a different country?Totally defensless bad inept management. No wonder Ed is leaving. He probably gave up!

Yes, it would be ludicrous to suggest that other ATC departments would have extra staff hanging around. That is why I stated that NO airport would have extra staff hanging around. I certainly wasn`t trying to cover anything up. Plus, the airport wouldn`t close for baggage handlers to have their break (which is a legal obligation in the case of ATC staff by the way), as the aircraft can still land. There would just be a delay in unloading the aircraft surely.
