Err why not?..Surely its not a state secret... It was straight forward question and hoped they might give a straight answer. Wasnt asking for timings/prices etc just are they still doing that route in principle before I find an alternative....

I think this is instead of East Mids..Obviously commercial decision but wonder if its because they operate with their own aircraft from Birmingham which gives continuity at a technically difficult airport..

The route starts next March, Monarch will be operating their own a/c from EMA well before then.

If Eazy dont restart Gib from Lpl next year, I think i would make a good niche route for Jet2 from MAN/BLK, would fit in with the holiday side too, offering short breaks to Gib or along coast towards Algarve, would give alternative to that coast rather than flying into Faro or Malaga.

The Algarve is a rather long drive from Gib. Better to use Seville or Jerez airports because you have to drive past or near both cities to get to the Algarve so a non -starter really. I would have thought if you are going to the Algarve Faro is the one. Also the Costa de Luz is very popular with German and Scandinavian visitors hence a lot of Air Berlin and Norwegian flights into Seville and is not really a UK tourist area. Sayng that there are some wonderful quiet areas on the coast but not for bathing - cold Atlantic!

A long drive...

You are right Compton3Bravo, it is a long drive from Faro to Gib. I spend a lot of time down there and have frequently seen reports in the Andalucian press about the need and feasability of a new airport at Huelva to service the developing Costa de la Luz.

Long-term much of the heavy industry close to Huelva is scheduled to move so the development of this coast and its environs will have added attraction -- not forgetting that the area is already famous for the Donana national park and Palos de la Frontera where Christopher Columbus sailed from in search of the 'New World'.

Spain won't be building any new airports any time soon.

New Spanish airport

Oh yes they will, there are advanced plans to build one at Antequera north of Malaga on the main road to either Granada or Cordoba! The city is stunning and well worth a visit in its own right.

I live in between all 4 airports (XRY, AGP, SVQ and GIB), I would love to see a connection to LHR from somewhere apart from GIB. Timings with BA from Gib are not brilliant for connections and I head north/south to LHR at least 4-6 times a month, and many a time have to suffer going through Barajas which is not really a pleasant experience. The new flights offered by BA from GIB are welcome, but we need a second daily service instead of the additional 3 days - I don't know whether demand warrents this.

FYI, I read a post recently that Thomson are supposed to start a new service ex LGW to XRY to "compliment" Ryanair's existing STN service.

As C3B has already stated the Costa del Luz is frequented mainly by Germans and Scandinavian's rather than Brits. This is why there is not that many offerings at this time, although SVQ used to have good connections to the UK (might still be the case).

compton - you're not serious about a new airport at Antequera are you ? Last I heard it was on hold indefinitely. I'm sure Antequera is worth a visit in its own right, but Cordoba is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Cordoba airport is looking a little quiet at the moment.

After Ciudad Real, Castellon and Corvera and a new 2nd runway at Malaga less than an hour away by road, the mind boggles... I guess Angela Merkel will make her thoughts known at some point in the future

I also thought Antequera was on hold and Cordoba was still in the throws of completing the runway extension ? One other question I have is does anyone actually use the 2nd runway in Malaga - I was sat in the SalaVIP 5 times in July and saw all traffic using the existing runway, the new runway may be open, but I don't see it used at all ?

Compton,

Spain may be a pleasant place to live, and have beautiful cities, but unfortunately it's bankrupt, and some time in the next month or so, will be going to the EU for a bail-out.

This is the sole basis for my comment that no airports will be built in Spain in the near future, and I'm sticking to that opinion.

LGS I agree with you, the regional governments are bust and cant pay the Pharmacy bills, think there would be riots if they went ahead with a new airport..

Mr Spotty M thanks for the info..appreciated
