New Terminal

First time through the new terminal at Gib and its impressive until you come out of arrivals and look for a public telephone.....err sorry they arnt connected yet was the reply .....If routes here are being lost it must be cos the yields are low..plenty of pax on them.

The new terminal will go into the history books under the heading of `biggest waste of public money` I fear. At least they wont need to bother with the tunnel under the runway for a long time

Equally impressed by new terminal - sounds like it will keep its 'newness' for some time with the little use it will get.... Small gripe, the baggage delivery chute seems to hold bags for ages waiting for a space to become clear on the reclaim belt. Seemed to be causing holdups when I came through and needed someone with a clipboard to get a helper to nudge the baggage out. Other than that, it's certainly a beautiful building - presume the departures area will be as impressive.

So we have gone from a year round service from man to gib with easyjet jumping on bandwagon, to dilute the service from the northwest into a seasonal one, nice going. Despite not being a fan of fr, maybe a route they could poach off easy and mon, or maybe a twice weekly from jet2. Could be a good niche route for jet2 from blk but more likely a man route overall.

Ryanair

Local buzz is that Ryanair have been sniffing round Gib, as they would be welcomed with open arms and for free down there at the moment, not sure if their 737-800`s would be suitable for the short runway though but Jet2`s 733`s would. Easyjet has hammered Monarch on prices for the last couple of years so other operators might be waiting to see if they do come back for summer 2013 from LPL or Man...Personally I dont think they will though

If Monarch can bring A320's and 757's into GIB then surely a 737-800 would?

Has anyone got a contact name (and contact details if poss)for the personnel from the actual airlines who fly into GIB can you please PM me. Looking for the names of the staff who sign the SLA, not the handling agent details in GIB.

All will be revealed in PM, and no, not starting up a GHA at GIB!

Cheers

Monarch's MAN-GIB flights for winter 2012/13 will operate on Mondays and Fridays (and Wednesdays in some months). Flights will no longer be in a W pattern and will operate as follows, taken from the first week in March:

MON
ZB574 MAN-GIB Dep. 07:00 Arr. 09:55
ZB575 GIB-MAN Dep. 10:40 Arr. 13:35

WED
ZB574 MAN-GIB Dep. 07:00 Arr. 09:55
ZB575 GIB-MAN Dep. 10:40 Arr. 13:35

FRI
ZB574 MAN-GIB Dep. 15:30 Arr. 18:25
ZB575 GIB-MAN Dep. 19:05 Arr. 22:00

EasyJet's LPL-GIB route remains seasonal.

On a side note I have heard that Gibraltar Airport is now called Gibraltar International Airport.

737-800 suffers from an unhealthy combination of (relatively) high approach speed and less than great brakes.
757 bigger than either 737 or A320 but much better stoppers!

LPL-GIB gone forever??

The below is taken from todays Gib Chronicle and appears to indicated the end of this route completely

Gibraltar Government has expressed regret at the announcement from easyJet that services from Liverpool will discontinue as from the end of October 2012.
Government recognises that it is for commercial reasons that easyJet have taken this decision.

This comes despite conversations between Government and the airline to try and redress the situation.

Monarch rules the north

In a bid to maintain capacity from the northwest region of the UK, the Government said they were pleased to confirm that Monarch Airlines are to increase capacity on the Manchester to Gibraltar route for the winter season of 2012, where the airline will operate four flights per week, and this will continue as a minimum all year round.

The Government also noted that regrettably services from East Midlands Airport in the UK operated by bmibaby will discontinue as from September 2012 due to the closure of the airline. However Government did confirm that it has acted immediately to ensure the continuation of services by another airline from East Midlands to Gibraltar as from the start of the summer season of 2013, the details of which will be announced in due course.

Minister for Tourism, Neil Costa, said, “As we are witnessing, the airline industry is changeable and the effects on a relatively small destination like Gibraltar can be significant. I am pleased to say, however, that we have been able to sustain capacity from the northwest of the UK and that we have worked to regain a service from East Midlands. Whilst it is a pity that services from Liverpool will discontinue, we fully accept easyJet’s commercial decision on this matter and look forward to continued work with the airline on their robust services from London Gatwick and in looking at opportunities to develop other regional connections from the UK to Gibraltar.”

The good news is that from summer `13 a new airline will operate from East Mids to GIb...got to be Jet2 ...loved EZY from LPL but hey ho such is life eh

No it Doesn't need to be Jet2. As Monarch will have a base at EMA next summer along with a base up the M1 at LBA as well.

Take your point but the Jet2 rumours have been round Gib for a while and the competition on the route would be welcome, pricewise

I believe EasyJet have stopped the route as it wasnt profitable.

I think it would also be nice to see LBA if Jet2 are coming over. I think EDI is needed too as its a long drive from Scotland to Manchester. I also think DUB would be good because Malaga is a huge destination from there so i think it would attract people here too

Nice to see we are going to get EMA back for next summer as well Monarch or Jet2? Who will it be? we shall see!!!

You must be joking.

GIB do not discount or offer anything for free which is why airlines keep pulling off the routes.

Oh and 757s have a double main bogey so the have lots of brakes and also low(ish) pavement weight rating.

A320s stop well.

A321 doesn't and has a high pavement weight rating as it only has a single main bogey.

No idea about 737-800 but I would imagine the PCN is pretty high.

Thought the issue with Ryanair 737-800’s is that the airline bought the aircraft with de-rated engines which means they need longer runways than similar aircraft.
