Still think there is room for a 3 x weekly service (Fri/Mon/Wed) to Milan so long as flights are at sensible times and fares competitive. All year round destination for both business & leisure.

Don't think you'll get it in the short term. LS don't appear to be operating their Bergamo service from Leeds this winter for the first time.

I personally think that there will be little, if any route development for Summer 09 at Newcastle. The market is far too unstable at the moment and over the past few seasons we have seen a reduction in the route network, though at times frequency on existing routes has been increased. I have said this before, particularly on the charter and low cost route structure, that we could sustain a larger variety. We have lost recently the Thomas Cook/Monarch charters to the Caribbean and also some short hauls, some of which were consistently full, but obviously did not generate enough of a profit, such as JTR, KLX and CHQ.

Also, spain seems to be decreasing in popularity, with locos and charters concentrating on Turkey - evident from the number of DLM/BJV and AYT flights this year.

Once the market recovers from the current slump, I think we will stand a chance at gaining more routes and increasing in expansion. (Do I mention NYC? )

I think you are probably right, we can certainly expect a reduction in capacity from Thomas Cook next season Thomson have announced an overall reduction but I don't know about NCL.

Lo-cost, I think we may see the odd new route from either Jet 2 (Ibiza) and from EZY and, of course if the rumours about Ryanair and Flyglobespan are true, that might help. Flybe usually comes up with something new each year and Air Southwest could increase frequency next season if they do well this year.

Legacy carriers....Lufthansa (new route) and an increase in frequency to 2 daily on Copenhagen are the main outside possibilities. Aer Arran....will they return or not?

The CAA stats for July are even more confusing than last month.

Newquay 40
Plymouth 1820

I can't believe that only 40 pax went to Newquay in July.

Can anyone throw any light on this?????

Anyone got any idea if any of the Dubai Air Wing a/c are operating into NCL this week - it seems that this seems to be the weekend where the Prince goes shooting in Northumberland and normally brings his 744 along...

Cheers in advance

Cimber Air from CPH had to make an emergency landing in Billund last night after its engine apparently caught fire.

The flight was over the North Sea when the incident happened and had to turn back.

A replacement a/c flew the pax back in to NCL at about 9pm last night.

CONGRATULATIONS TO EK.
One year today since start of service and they are extremely happy . Carried 18,000 more passengers in the first year more than Birmingham in their first year. So not all gloom and doom.

And how many passengers in the total first year for EK? They fly with A332 now? Could there be a T7 in the near future or a second flight?

A very good result that shows good promise.

I think alot to do with the global brand of EK which has grown enormously over the last 6 -8 years and the connections offered. Not a direct comparison.

I think the load factors are 70%-80%, I would have thought it needed to be a little bit higher to merit a larger aircraft. The fire category would also need to increase a level, which is easier said than done, although I'm under the impression that it's being investigated. Couple of years away I think.

From the horses mouth, the article states:

Vic Sheppard, vice president of Emirates in the UK and Ireland, said: “We’ve seen some of our best-ever figures for a UK route launch, despite operating through some tough times. We would certainly aspire to graduate to a 777 here. That would be a natural progression for us, and not that ambitious. We would expect that after maybe three years."

Could be brought forward once all those Arabs come to invest in the Toon...

A 25% of the EK are in biz class, and people say there is no potential in the north east for a decent increase in GA!

Fire Category

I can't really add too much to that, the airport is currently CAT8 fire cover (CAT9 available on request) and would need to be CAT9 permanently for a aircraft bigger than an A330 daily. That i think would require a increase in manpower, and some other variables thrown in. Thats as much as my little bit of knowledge stretches to.
