Not at all Delta8!
From experience its easy enough to check in 1 flight a day on manual.
Out of all the easyjet flights, why not check one or two in a day manual? there isnt enough practice! i used to dred it. At least with the likes of EZY, LS and other low cost carriers there is no onward connections to through check bags, its a simple 1 Male, 1 Female 2 bags! AND NO SEATS! how much easier can u get?!

This made the headlines this morning on GMTV news and Century Radio news and there was in my opinion items of news that came after that which in my opinion were more important then a delay (technically a reschedual) Also note the TCX zth inbound is indef dly and no mention of that ??
On the subject of Manual check in Servisair do up to 3 manual check ins a day because Fr flights are all manual. Yes it is alot more work and takes more concetration but when you get your training this is covered.

Flyjet delay

Yes the BBC will have this as the lead story all day, they love negative stories about NCL. There latest headline is passengers held hostage for 8hrs on plane(is this true) No mention that they were put up in hotels and given meals. Still must have been pretty bad for the pax, and by the sound of it the crew.

jet2

Just been looking at latest provisional CAA passenger stats, and the figures for the new Jet 2 service to LGW dont look to good.
Bearing in mind that they have cancelled the AMS service that generated an extra 12000 extra pax on the route in March when compared to the previous year when it was only opperated by KL ( thats making an assumption that all the extra pax went with Jet 2) In April the figure was 7000 extra.
The LGW figures for April 2007 when Jet 2 flew the route was just 6668 compared to April 2006 when B A had 17389 pax a reduction of 62%
I think that gives Jet 2 an average load of about 45 pax per flight !
The timing changes coming into force shortly I dont think will help as there will be just one early return service in the morning, with two in each direction in the afternoon/ evening. Of course there are no interline connections on the route now.
Will they continue to opperate this service if the loads dont pick up ??

flyjet!

totally blown out of proportion! half of what the press have said isn't even true, and why should staff of flyjet have to put up with so much abuse when actually they were dealing with a technical problem with the a/c? who wants to fly on a tech a/c - i sure as hell don't!! Fair enough 5 or 8 hours whatever it was is a very very long time to be stuck on an a/c on the tarmac, but still think its pathetic the way it's been covered.

NCL1 you are right the press what can I say. The facts:

Aircraft went tech but nothing new there this is a daily occurance.
Pax were boarded and the crew did a head count. Servisair had the correct number of boarding cards and checked every thing over and over again. But the crew kept coming back with an incorrect head count.
This went on for some time and the crew were asked to do a mark off which they also cocked up.
The captain then decided that the only way forward was a baggage id. But by this time Servisair had all of their other aircraft on the ground (including the late Flyglobespan) in the tea time peak.
The baggage id then took place with no discrepencies.
Once the aircraft had been reloaded the captain then applied for a slot. Guess what the slot was for 2 hours later.
Then passenger became more restless and really gave the crew the opportunity to cancel the flight as several of them were causing the crew to become concerned I heard that the captain locked himself in the flight deck and would not come out I was also told that one male cabin crew member ran off the aircraft in tears and the capt wanted to off load 50 passengers for safety reasons.
I also understand that once the passengers had been allowed off the flight Servisair gave them vouchers to get some food and drink as they had been offered nothing onboard not even water and they were then transported to a near by hotel for the night.

Worthbearing in mind that this aircraft was also going to HER on route for fuel as the passengers were told it had a problem with its fuel system and would require more fuel to replace the fuel lost and to have some repairs done in greece (very strange).
It was then going to stop at SSH for the night and come back later today.

Thanks for that ftomcatf. Just a quick question maybe a little of topic but while on the subject of head counts, ive always wondered why they cant just count the number of empty seats (except obviously if theres infants on parents laps) surely the crew knows the total number of seats on an aircraft?

Thanks

Aidoair

You will probably find that because they counted the empty seats this is what caused the error. Its ok if you have say 178 on a 180 seater aircraft.
But in this case it was about 200 on a 233 seater and the crew was allowing them to walk around the aircraft and go to the toilet. Oh sorry and smoke on the tarmac aswell as the toilet - Boeing 757 full of leaking fuel cig ends rolling around the tarmac. It could of been alot more interesting.

These negative comments on this forum are not helping the situation, the BBC can manage to elaborate and add bits all by themselves, Flyjet don't need this forum too!

I am sure the facts of the whole situation are alot different from what is stated by both the BBC and ppruners. Certainly I think it is very unfair to mention about a particular crew member, this could be classed as personal attacks. Lets just leave the matter to lie until the facts are established.

I don't suppose the crew would have had the hours to operate anyway.

As a journalist who covered the above story.

All I can say is that my organisation reported the facts as they were given to us.

A statement from the airline was broadcast. Shame there was no interview but a very efficent PR guy sorted us with info in double quick time

An interview with the airport was broadcast.

And passengers who wanted to tell us what happened to them were interviewed.

Nothing was made up.

The facts were a plane went tech, passengers said they were treated badly, the airport told us they were not happy and were looking into it and the airline provided us with a statement explaining what they thought had happened. That is what we reported. Everyone's side of the story covered.

Bad covereage? I don't think how it could have been much better.

As for cabin crew getting upset. First I have heard about this but it it happened why not report it?

As for radio stations running the story top. Again why not? We are in the business of reporting what is happening. It was either run that top or run a story about a business park - and possibly 4000 jobs coming to Sunderland. What do you think most people would have been talking about on the bus/in the pub etc that night?

And if there is some sort of health and safety issue regarding smoking....That is a story worth covering. Please PM me and I will check that out.

Regards

Dan

As a pilot whom ops out of NCL, I am concerned at the smoking on the tarmac comments. This is a HUGE health and safety risk that should not have been allowed to occur, regardless of the delays. Surely Servisair personnel were in the area throughout the delay?

I am sure OpsGuy will be along soon to add his comments on this!

Jet2 LGW Figures

Lets not forget that when BA pulled the route anyone that was booked on it had the choice to transfer over to LHR so quite a few pax will still do that.
Altho its an old route, the service to Jet2 is still new and I think you have to give them a bit of time to proove that they can do the serivce, there was a recent letter sent in regarding the service on Jet2 by an editor of a newspaper saying how outstanding it was.
Its like all routes launched by an airline, they take a little while to build up, Jets's PMI AGP services were a little quiet at first but they are building up now so about 200 per sector now.
With the time changes coming up it should get busier soon

FJE & tabloid sensationalism.

Great, a journalist....

I would suggest that tabloids/broadsheets print what they want - whether a shread of truth or not, then it's over to the High Court in London for a Judge to decide who is telling the truth.

This unfortunate FJE saga was an odds-on case for the tabloid chip wrappers to get their teeth stuck into something regarding Newcastle Airport, or one of the airlines who operate in/out.

Did the press report on anybody who was treated well in this incident - no, but I bet there was.

Unfortunately events like this will always quench the publics thirst for speculation, not helped by garbage printed in a local rag.

And (as nclpilot) I also operate out of Newcastle, so I am also concerned about this "smoking on the apron" report.

I doubt we will ever know what really happened. But I am sure all handling agents and crew did the best they could in what was surely a awkward situation. I would not like to be sitting in an aircraft on an apron for 6 hours, nobody would - but I cannot imagine that nobody was kept up to date?

Journo's hijack the first irrate looking passenger who will be only to pleased to descirbe the "inhumane treatment" of their lagered up family by the airline. I doubt the local rag got an "across the board" view of this situation.

Apologies for my rant, but it is always the same. Remember the Finnair 757 carrying out a go-around a few years ago when the Sabena RJ ran off the runway? That was reported by the local rag as "seconds from disaster as approaching aircraft narrowly misses stricken jet" - b*****ks, the Pilot of the Finnair 757 was told to initiate a missed approach procedure from..... 6 miles out - hardly a near miss.

flyjet...

as i said the whole thing in my opinion has totally been blown out of proportion! But as for the comments about crew counting, it was bags they believed to be over on as well as under pax! i dont believe it is cabin crew responsibility or job to get into the hold and count bags, if the handling agent and baggage handlers can't account for bags then the only way to solve it is a baggage id, as crew i would rather have a delayed aircraft than an unsafe one!
Also flight crew and cabin crew can't be blamed for holding the pax onboard, they go on what they are told by handling agents, engineers, ops etc. They were doing there job, i don't tihnk many crew want to be sat on the tarmac for hours on end as well as the pax!
Again in my opinion this could have happened to ANY airline, not just flyjet, however flyjet always seem to gain negative comments from people who know little about the compnay at all.

This was just one of those bad days that every airline has during the summer season! This just happened to get leaked to the press and has just escalated from there.

Remember the Excel delays a couple of years ago when they were operating SFB and POP on that 767.
