''What would be great is if the government gave the go ahead for compulsive land purchase into hertfordshire for the airport to grow to 30mppa.'' Would get my vote Falcon.

Where did you hear this from?

I think any expansion plans for Luton from Monarch will be on hold for a year or two. The airline needs to source atleast 5-6 additional aircraft, just to cover the additional expansion from East Midlands, Leeds-Bradford and Birmingham...

At present the airline is wet leasing 737's from some European carriers, to cover this expansion. But doing this, is expensive and cannot fully carrry through Monarch's brand, so I am sure they will want to get their own metal and crew flying these routes first.

I hope not, but in the short term, it wouldn't surprise me if an aircraft was trimmed from the Luton base and the schedule tweaked to operate from one of the new bases and doing something similar from LGW and MAN.
I didn't. Was just a hunch considering they've recently opened routes to Rome and Munich. Fair points though, didn't think of that.

Dohhh!

You got my hopes up, and was hoping you would correct me, thinking you knew something, the rest of us didn't...

I love Monarch, and always try to fly them if I can, over the other Low Cost Carriers.

No plans to trim any existing Monarch bases. Only growth on the cards at the moment depending on what airports offer the best incentives. Luton are not the sharpest or keenest of airport operators.....

Grrr

Monarch have big expansion plans. 13-14 will see the B757 and A300 fleet removal, whilst more Airbus will be delivered. Overall expansion and good luck to them.

Where did all the destinations go?

I'd like to see Monarch re-instate some of their pevious routes from Luton, which included: Catania, Orlando, Las Palmas etc.

Interestingly Liverpool airport are now looking to increase charter flights. I think that Luton is missing out in relation to some holiday destinations that the low costs do not operate to?

Like gilesdavies, I prefer Monarch to any other low cost airline but I personally feel as though they are tiring of Luton. In the old days, at least 90% of their flying programme was from Luton!

Ironically, the original holiday charter airlines re-invented themselves as low cost scheduled carriers, whilst the original low cost scheduled airlines now offer some trimmings to produce a package holiday.

Why should LLAOL offer them incentives? There simply isn't the room at Luton! There is real shortage of hard standing; how many stands haven't got overnighting aircraft on them now? Hence, the Masterplan being published recently to mitigate this problem somewhat.

There are certainly gaps which could be filled from Luton. Venice, Naples, Dubrovnik are obvious candidates, maybe a Scandinavian city (Stockholm/Copenhagen?). easyJet have had aircraft based at Luton, but operating other bases (Dortmund/Barcelona-Amsterdam) - with reduction in that sort of operation - good news for Luton?

Dannyboy, for exactly the reason you've just said. A Monarch aircraft with 214 seats is a better use of a slot than an Easy aircraft with 149 seats (for example). If the only way the airport can grow pax is by better use of slots then this is a good reason for them to offer something given the retail revenue that they earn from each pax using the airport in addition to the per pax charge levied on the airlines.

I agree with TartinTon,

When you consider that the south stands was originally built to accommodate domestic airline flights (the terminal being the former Easyland building-which incorporated the former spectators building) and stands 16 and 17 were also for airline use. That equates to approximately 7 airline stands.

In effect there has always been those extra stands but for some reason private jets took precedence.

With passenger throughput declining at Cardiff and losses inevitably occuring, Abertis will have to look at subsidising the losses from other airports and no doubt Luton could become a victim?

The ratio of scheduled flights v charter flights used to be 5/95 now it's 95/5! In May of this year just over 1.7 million passengers flew on charters from all UK airports. Both Thomson and Monarch remain key players in this activity.

Luton in my mind 'hugely' under performs in this area where as back in the 70's and 80's it was one of the busiest in handling charters.

Both Monarch and Thomson should be 'enticed' to offer more services from their home base here at Luton. How on Earth did Gatwick and Manchester and Birmingham go on to handle more charter services than Luton?

Abertis really should re-consider those extra 5 stands that LLAL proposed that would be positioned to the east of the proposed multi-storey car park.

Ryanair will restart flights between Luton/Girona on 1 December, 3 x wkly for W12/13. S12 flights finish on 6 Nov. Flights on this route did not operate last winter, previously being summer only.

I only hope that once they get planning permission, Abertis will look to re-coup their investment quickly and get the airport to 18 million passengers sooner than later!

Grrr

Charter market is much smaller than the mid 1990's, you only have to look at Gatwick to see how much smaller the overall operation is now, compared to 15-20 years ago.

The low cost carriers offering holidays (Jet2 and easyJet come to mind). I can see a push by Monarch to use the Cosmos brand in future years?

When the European subsidies run dry, MOL will need somewhere to base his planes assuming they do not purchase Stansted.

Bizjets were and are free income, from memory the concession fee is not applicable as the passengers do not pass through the tinminal, but revenues are gained from landing and parking charges.

Buster - your recollection of the position regarding income from bizjets is correct.

Having just watched the video on the BBC report, that protest is simply laughable. How many - 8 people?

I popped into the Breachwood Green master plan exhibition tonight. It was great fun listening to the complaining locals who have bought houses at the end of the runway moan about aircraft noise.

Anyway I was chatting to a person in the know and he told be what was planned in phase one and what was not:

Work that IS Not in phase one is as follows:

Extending the taxiway at the 26 end.
Taxiway Foxtrot
Extending the south apron westwards
Multi-storey car park

Work that IS included:

Duelling of the approach road.
Extending the taxiway at the 08 end
Extending the south apron eastward
Remarking of the 6 pack eastern apron to create 8 stands with a slight increase in the apron size
Stands 16 and 17 to be handed back by Signature and remarked
Terminal to be redeveloped and expanded.
New pier for the south side of the eastern apron with a total of 5 new contact stands.

Work should start next winter and take 2 years to complete.

Grrr

Will the 08 taxiway mean a new Fire Station? Was once an issue with previous plans and costs. The new access would require the demolishing of the current facility?

Thanks OLNEY, pity my vision is not as sharp!
