Ryanair At Luton
I would suggest one of the main, or the main, reason why Ryanair have not put any more aircraft into Luton is that the airport have told them that they can by all means offer extra services but have to pay the going rate not get special deals from the likes of Birmingham, Bristol and East Midlands. I do not think the airport are too worried considering that Wizzair are still steadily increasing services and the track record Ryanair have got of starting new routes and then stopping them when it suits. easyJet make more money from passengers at Gatwick than any other airport in the UK so you can see why they want to offer as many routes as possible. At one time over 50 per cent of the passengers that flew from Luton lived north of Nottingham but I would think that is not the case now

The airport is full at night.
There is no overnight parking space at Luton for any more aircraft and so until some more concrete is poured there will be no further Luton based aircraft from what I can see.

No they are not..
Full this week, 2 x easy, monarch change over from leasing and the nightly sw4 cargo a/c

Back to charter economics?
Surely the 16 or so based EZY, 4 Ryans, 5 Monarch could be used during the night hours, as long as they depart before midnight (or whenever the noise restriction starts). Better use of expensive assets, fewer delays, etc would make a spare 6-7 hours roundtrip more than viable. And if the fares and destinations were right, I'm sure they would be popular with sun seekers.
Some of the former-GB Airways destinations in the Eastern Mediterranean would benefit from a link from north of London by EZY or ZB.

Night Rotations
Some thoughts on this issue:
1) I'm not sure that passengers actually like flying deep into the night but before locos it was the only way to get a cheap flight
2) There is now far more choice of flights so why would people want to travel at night? Monarch had an extensive night programme out of Luton during the summer of 2007 but this was cut back significantly in 2008 - lack of demand?
3) Locos offer flights mid evening to the Med at times that charter airlines never did because of their varied route structure - i.e. during the summer EZY offer flights to Palma, Malaga, Alicante departing around 20.00. Most charter airlines would already have their aircraft well into their afternoon rotation by this time.
4) I can't comment on Southwest but I would guess that locos don't offer any (or many in the case of EZY) night flights as they want all of their fleet to be ready for their intensive daytime schedule the next day. I recall that the now ceased night time LTN-ATH-LTN often had an adverse knock on effect on EZY's programme.
5) I'm sure that the airlines would be falling over themselves to offer night flights if they could make money out of them; after all aircraft don't generate cash sitting on the ground. I know we all pour scorn on the abilities of airline management from time to time but this is pretty basic stuff.
As a side note, there are only 3 based Monarch aircraft at Luton during thise winter and only 4 last summer.

There are plans afoot to commence a new all premium class only daily service to Abuja-Nigeria from Luton.
The airline BWAA-British West African airlines have supposedly bought or rented the old Silverjet lounge and are hoping to start services as soon as April.
The one aircraft is believed to be a 757 leased/bought from a well known UK charter/ACMI operator (Name intentionally withheld)
In the "Where are you now section"-the principles are trying to contact ex Silverjet staff-to get the business up and running.
How on earth anyone in their right mind would expect something like this to work in the current economic climate-is beyond comprehension.
I would be the first to wish it success but sadly experience of this type of service has in the most part ended quickly in failure (EOS/Maxjet/Silverjet) and they were serving prime business class destinations like New York and Dubai- and before the height of the current economic downfall.
It will sadly end in failure (if it ever gets started) and leave staff and passengers counting the cost yet again.

Thank you for your well wishes, and yes you are right we are in the process of operating an all business class model down to Abuja from Luton.
It is very clear from your comments that you are not a business person, and if you did understand the model maybe you would be more positive.

LTNMan et all........One factor that is often forgotten when considering the amount of free tarmac at LTN is that there are several major airliner maintenance facilities at LTN trying to jostle for ramp space (particularly at night)
At this time of year, TOM's H61 is full (3 or sometime 4 aircraft) All movements in and out of the hangar have to be carefully planned to prevents situations at night where our orange friends park on stands 15L/15/14 and block hangar access!
To this end I have frequent conversations with Apron Control and its clear they like to keep the South Stands free for maintenance overflow parking etc

LAX Flights
No disrespect to LTN, but you could just imagine the people on that BA flight from LAX!
They leave LAX one of the busiest airports in the world expecting to arrive at another of the worlds busiest airports and they arrive at LTN! I bet they must have thought it was the back of beyond having no air bridges and decending the aircraft via steps into this tin-shed called a terminal!

2008 Passenger Numbers...
Not really any surprises, but on the Travel Mole website thaey have confirmed passenger numbers at LTN increased 2.5% in 2008 to 10.2 million.

Luton airport saw passenger numbers rise by 2.5% to a record 10.2 million last year.
The additional 250,000 passengers in 2008 were helped by the launch of 13 new routes.
New destinations in France, Italy, Lithuania, Poland and Romania proved popular along with the first low cost flights from the UK to Kiev, the airport said.
Luton has confirmed further new services to Lvov in the Ukraine, Prague and Jersey this year.
Marketing director Natalie Raper said: “The figures show a continuing trend for travellers to choose London Luton Airport in the highly competitive South East UK market.
“With a constantly expanding choice of routes we now offer flights to over 90 destinations and continue to serve the requirements of both the business and leisure traveller.”
