No so long ago, Luton shifted 2.5 million passengers. Somewhere over the next two years a sustainable equilibrium between 10m and 2.5 will be reached
Paxing All Over The World
I doubt it. The cost to the carrier of shifting known routes across to another field is enormous and very risky. Folks will understand you cutting back the number of rotations per week but taking it away altogether?
Nope, not gonna happen.

PAXboy - you're probably more knowledgable than me on this. Given that LTN and STN are not that far apart, I don't really understand why an airline moving a route that used to go out of STN to instead going out of LTN would cause significant risk / costs.
Yes, you have to tell people already booked about the change of airport, but I imagine most people booking with U2 or FR would be indifferent between the two when it comes to booking.

Sky Europe did it and so have other airlines that over the years moved flights to Luton from other London airports. Ryanair often shifts flights between airports to save a few pennies, in fact they started life flying to Gatwick before moving to Luton and then moved the majority of their London operation to Stansted.
Also look at BA, they used to have a major operation at Gatwick and even now are still moving routes out of Gatwick to Heathrow when they can find a slot.

Southwest Airlines posted their first ever quarter loss this week. They are the business model for all low cost airlines. The future is going to be BUMPY!
Let us see the resilience of the business traveller. If passengers drop at London city, the entire market will be hammered on yields.
I bet you can charter a biz jet for significantly less that you could a few months ago? That market is certainly going to be challenged as currently it appears somewhat saturated? Buy a biz jet or send your executives pleb class?
Airlines can change airports to get discounts, but can thay find any passengers to fill their planes?

I see from the airport website that you can now book their new " meet and greet" car parking facility. It says, leave your car in one of the designated bays outside the terminal, where you will be met by a member of staff. Your car will be waiting for you, just feet from the terminal, upon your return. Seems to cost about Ł40 for one day.
I can't believe this facility is already available, when work on the new drop off zone, in the short term car park, has only been running for about two weeks.

Ryanair announce Luton – Languedoc route
Ryanair is to start flights between Luton Airport and Languedoc in France. The airline is to serve Béziers Cap d’Agde Airport from October 27 with twice weekly flights.
The winter service will see flights run on Fridays and Mondays to offer the opportunity for weekend breaks in the Mediterranean region of France.

"Languedoc" was announced as Beziers a couple of months ago.
The start of the winter timetables has brought Beziers, Trapani, Londonderry, Kaunas, Biarritz, Rzezow, and Szczecin, all new Ryanair destinations from Luton starting this week (but with the same four based aircraft). It's also brought a new twice daily Transavia service to Rotterdam.
Some EZY destinations have seen reduced services, and Dortmund is now operated by a Luton-based A319, rather than the DTM based aircraft hitherto.
Wizzair have this week introduced flights to Timisoara, Romania - their third Romanian destination from Luton. Ukraine flights are due to start in mid-December.

Osnabruck
This route was first noticed over a year ago.
A friend in Germany bought it to my attention as they would have been a regular user.
Have checked with a source at TUI in Luton and it appears there are no plans for this to happen.

Demise Of Sterling
Very sad news today about Sterling - good luck to all the employees. Fond memories at Luton of the DC-6s and especially the Caravelles. Remember well up to eight Caravelles on the ground at once most parked on the Ponderosa (stand 16 for the younger ones) from different airports in Denmark, Norway and Sweden with the passengers mostly on shopping trips. Then the Boeing 727s took over flying nearly 200 at a time. Very well liked and run airline and started by a Danish pastor (forgotten his name) calling his tour company Tjaeborg. It even started operations in the UK in the 1980s as one of the first direct sell holiday companies before being bought out.
Memories of British Midland -will the name disappear? - my memories go back to the Argonauts flying to Jersey on a regular basis but many more people will have longer memories than me? A particular sad day for European aviation I fear.

Meet and Greet service
Powerjet1: I can really recommend the CCS Meet & Greet service.
Not much more than offsite parking and no mucking about on packed buses touring around the various parking areas where you are usually last off!!
we would have used the Disabled Parking but parking fees have got so silly now that one extra day almost doubled the cost for 14 days!!
Only now need to convince Monarch to restore Almeria next year!!
I see Ryanair are still flying there from Luton until end of Jan '09, do Monarch really want to see me using Ryanair??? Perleease rethink, as Ryanair may need another Costa base to replace Valencia!!! Don't let them!!

Did a Sterling DC-8 ever land at Luton?
Sad day next week. After 25.5 continuous years with Monarch, G-MONB leaves for FedEx. Registered in March 1983, one of a number to replace the 720's! The other Seven fives' are going this winter, some to become spare parts!

Very sad day indeed, G-MONB lands back into Manchester on it's last revenue flight in the very early hours of Monday morning.
G-MONE finishes it's last revenue flight late Sunday night also, before onward to Fedex.

Not sure about the Sterling DC-8's at LTN as these appeared around 1984 by which time they had moved to STN......
Fond memories too of the hordes of Sterling Caravelle's on Sundays flying over the house on finals in the 1970's. I always remember one in particular which must have been no higher than 1500ft at around 7 miles out!!! (certainly made a noise!!)
