Now that Gatwick has gone public about their desire to lure Ryanair from Stansted, the only two influential airlines that are addicted to Essex International are easyJet, with their new found liking for the place and Air Berlin.
Blue Air are moving westward from the end of March, so where does that leave the second runway and completion for the Olympics.......in BAA tatters!
The closest thing to a new runway in the south east is going to be at London Stobart.
Finally the passengers at Gatwick are not subsidising Stansted and look what happens!
Has Stansted actually ever made the BAA any 'real' profit? Seriously, take cross subsidisation away, Stansted is a White Elephant!
Mind you, no doubt after the Olympics, Luton will be searching for a new concessionaire!
LBC by then might have an entirely different political agenda?

If we are going into the cycle of luring airlines from other airports, there will be no reason why the BAA will not entice other airlines from the smaller airports such as Luton for next to nothing charges, to get them to operate from there, dont see why the remaining EasyJet programme from Luton could not be transferred to Stansted, especially there will undoubtily be a huge great carrot at the end of the stick

Quote: "With most of Luton’s check-in staff and baggage handlers coming from the eastern block it must seem like home from home for many of Luton's passengers these days"...
And jolly good too.
In my experience, most of the Central / Eastern Europeans I've come across have an excellent work ethic and first class customer-facing skills - so this all good for everyone concerned

I cant really see how EZY would move to STN, there are a number of routes from a competition point of view I think would have to stay for them not to loose market share. I thinking more of thier original routes: EDI/GLA/BHD or BFS/ABZ/AMS/BCN/NCE/AGP/FAO/PMI. I would have thought Bordeaux/Krakow/Milan/Dortmond are more likely to disappear. The longer routes also seem to be popular, so maybe something like Funchal or Taba/Hurghada would work from LTN?

LTN is the busiest airport in terms of weekly flights for Wizz
London Luton Wizz Air’s busiest airport; 26 A320s split across 11 Central European bases | anna.aero
This year W6 will launch new routes to Riga and Belgrade (each 3 weekly) and it will add capacity to Bucharest (+7 weekly flights), Warsaw (+3 weekly flights), Wroclaw (+3 weekly flights) and Prague (+4 weekly flights).

Aer Arann Cutbacks?
Im not sure if this is new as not paid much attention to Aer Arann's program recently...
But a colleague of mine at work is going to Galway with work and was complaining to me today how his outward flight is via Waterford! Making the flight nearly two and three quarter hours...
Taking a quick glance at their timetable it seems their services on a Tuesday and Wednesday fly Luton-Waterford-Galway and vice versa on their twice daily rotations... Seems a little strange as on some other days of the week they have three direct flights a day to Galway and two seperate direct flights to Waterford.
There doesn't seem much logic in how on these two days they have such a change in capacity to other days of the week.
Would be great to see a Cork from LTN as this has been lacking for years, while we have excellent conenctions to other parts of Ireland... Even if frequencies by FR have gradually been reduced recently.

January pax down 8.1%
Source: CAA
January 2010 passenger figures 529105 -8.1% & rolling 12 months 9068416.
BHX was 519716 -7.4% and rolling 9051612 down 5.4%
EDI 513357 and rolling 9002956.
All very close.
BHX preparing themselves for 8.6-8.7 Million this year apparently.
EDI of course gain two Ryanair units but have lost GSM.

Passenger Figures
Like most airports in January in the UK they were affected one way or another by the inclement weather, so I think we will have to wait until the February and March figures come out to see how the underlying trends are doing.

FT.com / Companies / Aerospace & Defence - EasyJet angers investors over pay
Shareholders are in no mood to tolerate remuneration arrangements that don’t clearly link rewards and performance.
Life in easyLand appears to be problematical?

It's been snowing outside my window since before 7 and it still is. Must have had about 3". The 'Heavy Snow' warning for today was changed yesterday to 'Heavy Rain'. Ho hum.
I suppose it is rain, it's just white!

Wizzair to Bourgas and Varna This Summer...
Just had a marketing email from Wizzair advertising their flights to the Bulgarian coastal cities of Varna and Bougas are on sale for this summer...
They will be flying 5x weekly to Bourgas and 2x weekly to Varna.
Are these an increase on the flights operated last summer? Any hows great to see a return of these flights!
Five times weekly to Bourgas seems quite a high frequency, even though it is becoming more and more popular with Brits to visit, I didn't realise it was that popular and Wizzair are not hugely known as a Low Cost Carrier in the UK. With a large amount of their business being flown by East Europeans.

I know the Bourgas flights do very well, but I reckon the high frequency could be partly explained by the drop in capacity offered by the charter airlines this summer.
There'll be no more Monarch from Gatwick this summer. Thomson is decreasing capacity from 767-300s on the Gatwick route, to 738s/752s and from 757s on the Luton services to 738s too.
This seems quite drastic to me considering theres no more FCA, Astreus orViking services either. Also TCX pulled out of LGW-VAR last year I think.
