Monkey Lover - as a rule of thumb guide Salford lies North of the waterways as defined by the Ship Canal/Salford Quays/River Irwell. Manchester lies South of same, the waterway forming the boundary between the two Cities. MAN U is located South.

symphonyangel - very minor point, but it is 51% Peel, 49% MCC. There was a commercial reason it was set up that way. Something to do with the Manchester ratepayers not having a say in 'commercial' decisions made by the major shareholder.

George Tower -- read this previous PPruNe link. Although it is a few years old, most of what was being discussed then is relevant.

Peel own nearly all the land north & west. They have just acquired more land to the west. So extending up to the motorway would be a possibility, though still giving a restricted TODA.

The powerlines were fed from the old Power Station long since demolished. The lines are supposedly expensive to demolish: £2M comes to mind and that was several years ago when the subject was aired. All things are possible of course if you are prepared to spend money in creating the grand plan.

Plans previously existed for a new hard runway which would be realigned around the 06/24 or 07/25 axis, so the high level bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal would not be a problem. Looking at goggle maps, the problem would shift to an extended centreline over heavily built-up housing areas, and even towards Manchester City centre on very long finals. Not to mention a nearby school and sports complex, which could come in useful for grabbing some plummeting newspaper headlines.

I still can't see it happening. Heliport maybe. There is no money to be made out of catering for the current low end of the GA market. Come 2014 the UDP map will be up for review and many are suggesting that Barton will loose its current UDP protection as an airfield.
