To invest in an upgrade would of course cost money, how much depends on the installation. Personally I would want to see an increase in traffic before spending on an upgrade because realistically offering CAT2 or 3 will not be the thing to pull the customers in. DTVA does not suffer that many days where they are fogbound to an extent where commercial activity stops completely. IMHO not worth the investment.

I'm no expert, but I'd imagine that purposely upgrading the ILS will cost money, but upgrading the ILS as part of mandatory lighting works could cost a lot less, so is it not a case of do it now to save money later, even if there's not the demand to warrant it?

From Northern Echo 31/12/08:

BUDGET airline flyglobespan will decide next month whether to continue services from Durham Tees Valley Airport (DTVA). The company’s chief executive, Rick Green, said a review of its operations would be completed early in the new year.

But Mr Green could not guarantee that the airline would continue operating from DTVA beyond the new year.

He said: “Under normal circumstances, we would have the summer’s itinerary finalised by now. The reason we are still deciding it is that the plane flying from Durham Tees Valley reaches its end of lease life in February.

The situation is under ongoing review and we will conclude our findings by January 10. Then we will decide either we can source an alternative aircraft or we can’t.”

Over the summer, flyglobespan denied rumours it was considering pulling out of DTVA.

And in October, the airport said it was “very close” to finalising an agreement with the airline for next year’s itinerary.

Flyglobespan have already gone I'm afraid, last flight was a week ago as of yesterday (11th Jan), they only come in on a weekend now on the troop contract.

Nothing more will be heard about it now until some smart- journalist picks up on it, and as far as I'm concerned, the sooner the better really, so it's over and done with.

The ILS is capable of Cat III operation. The approach lighting is not.
The ILS will remain at Cat I as there is no Touchdown Zone (TDZ) lighting on the runway and no supplementary approach lighting.

See HERE for more info on airfield ground lighting.

Papa Osca,
Having read the information on lighting required for CAT II/III approaches, as you say MME does not have this. I can't remember if there are runway centre line lights, if not, then obviously this would add to the cost quite a lot. I presume Peel have put on hold any plans they had of upgrading the apron area and taxi ways, or don't they exist anymore.

Yes there are centreline lights on the runway at MME.

Heard that touch down lights might be included in the re-wire as the runway length is supposedly going to be slightly reduced, hopefully not as much as Sheffield city!!

Any thoughts on how the DC-3 was damaged?

My thoughts are the obvious, bird strike and the outsider, could it of been ice from the props as they were flying at 8000ft and it was around minus 10. Looks like it needs a new radar dish cover.

Thumbs down DTV Rest Home

It had been a while since I had paid my local airport a visit,so decided to 'audit' while passing through.

Well that took two minutes as it resembled more of a 'rest home' than an international airport.

Car parks empty,terminal empty,apron empty apart from a few FRA aircraft.Circut dead.

It really makes one wonder how much more Peel(&One North east) will put up with.They have provided the funds for expansion to the terminal and facilities and the the result is..well basically back to where we were 20 years ago? I know we are in recession but that doesn't tell the whole story surely?

Arrivals board was scary.
No holiday flights ,3 Amsterdam flights,3 Heathrow flights and three Aberdeen flights.I'm sure we had more flights on opening day all those years ago? I was there early morning and the arrivals board continued into the next day,there was so little happening.

To put it bluntly..this airport is going nowhere fast(which is more that the aircraft are).Can anyone tell me what the local management are doing to encourage services? Did anything come out of last years route conference?

Finally anyone have any up to date pax. figures for the end of the year? noticed the last lot published were not too good.

Airfield Lighting
Should there really be a debate on the adequacy of the lighting after all? Kerry informs us that
£2.6m on improving the lighting of the airfield, which has just been completed.
Mind you there a few other howlers :
Q.? Worst business advice?
A. I don't recall getting any bad advice, well not that I recall taking any notice of.
So she can't blame anyone else......however also note
One of the things which has given me the most pride in the first nine months in the job has been the promotion of someone who was a baggage handler, when I started here, to a position where he is now running the airfield.
I see Kerry appears to clearly be a "people person" from her time in HR. Perhaps SOMEONE may eventually realise that this is not necessarily a recipe for successfully running & developing an airport.

Gis A Job Kerry

Without wishing to be disparaging to the individual involved I find it hard to believe that someone whose CV convinced the airport to employ him as a manual worker on baggage handling can now be in charge of an International Airport within 9 months. I have heard of field promotion at time of war on the battlefield but this seems to be a little strange to say the least.
P.S. I have seen lots of aeroplanes take off and land .Any chance of a job as an air traffic controller?

Sorry paarmo but they like to force out ATC staff rather than recruit! Several of these people would of made perfect candidates for running the airfield, as Kerry calls it! but she was part of the plan to force them out! Seems to me that she is surrounding herself with people who are going to be loyal to her and not the airport!

Give Peel their due , they have spent a considerable amount of money recently. I don't know what the running costs are for the airport but they can't even be close to running at a profit with the scarcity of traffic so they must be pumping in money every month just to keep it going.
There does not seem to be any chance of development for housing for the next 10yrs and about the same for business units so what exactly are they getting out of it.?
Is there a master plan that I am missing?.

1. Peel are a property development company;

2. Local authorities, regional development companies etc like airports as they see them as key to economic development;

3. DTVA has lots of surplus land;

4. put these three together and you can develop the land attached to an airport 'easier' (planning permission, funding) than you could if it was elsewhere (look at what Stobart's are doing at Carlisle, look what's happened to the former Speke airport site at Liverpool);

5. If the airport makes a few bob from aviation, all well and good - if not you've got a site where a lot of the infrastructure you need to make it attractive for development has been paid for by somebody else (see point 2 and look what happened at Sheffield City).

1. Yes Peel are property developers.

2. The local authoritys have either totally forgotten they own part of and airport or they have been misled by the propaganda pumped out by Peel as no one seems to say what a mess the place is in.

3. Surplus land, but brown field land there is god knows what berried on the Southside along with asbestos sheds on the surface nevermind the concrete pans and taxi ways.

4. Planning is harder than Carlisle. If councilor Jones and her NIMBY's get wind of anything they will kick off, remember the first Southside development well they sucuppered that.

I wouldn't be surprised if Peel don't eventually sell the whole site.

When the going gets tough, Peel can always use the airport factor to get money/concessions out of local authorities and development agencies ("if we can't make any money, we'll have to shut the airport...")

3. Surplus land, but brown field land there is god knows what berried on the Southside along with asbestos sheds on the surface nevermind the concrete pans and taxi ways.
Brown field needs cleaning up? 'airport' factor will help get somebody else to pay for it...

There's NIMBY's everywhere - 'airport' factor will give planners a bit of back-bone...

I wonder what the response would be if Peel said that they were going to close Durham Tees Valley airport.

I suppose they wouldn't advertise it they would just pull the plug like Globespan. Nothing said in the media about that.

Didn't Peel say we would be getting some kind of proper masterplan in the new year? Aren't we about the only airport in the country without one?

Masterplan, cunning plan might be needed.

It might be time to sweep the pans on the Southside for parking or better still a breakers yard, now that would put the wind up the NIMBY's.

I don't really see the development of Teesside Airport alongside running it as an airport.
Houses are out.Would you buy a house with the back garden overlooking a runway?.( Yes I suppose some of you would but we are talking real world here. Planners would not allow it on safety grounds anyway.)
Business premises are already planned but with every local authority within 100 miles of the airport having huge square footage already available and brownfield and greenfield sites available for self build then the opportunities are bleak at best unless as Peel have claimed the business park will be reliant on aviation.
Closing the airport and building houses is not an option at the moment and for the foreseeable future.
Similarly for business units.
Shops would appear to be out also as there are readily available units available in whatever design and layout you require at every High Street and out of town shopping centre in the country let alone the Teesside area.
Peel appear to have spent nearly £5 million pounds at the airport since their takeover and must be subsidising the running costs on a month to month basis.
They must believe that they have a future in aviation in some way at Teesside but with the current management I do not see what their masterplan is.
