MME isn't the only route to get frequencies chopped, BFS-WAW and PIK-WAW have both dropped 1 flight a week too (BFS 3 to 2, PIK 4 to 3), and probably many others too.
All three probably done to facilitate the new 3 x weekly DSA-WAW service.

Anyone spotted this petition in the House of Commons from the new MP for Sedgefield?

EDM 489: DURHAM TEES VALLEY AIRPORT

Tabled by Phil Wilson
Denis Murphy
Dari Taylor
John Cummings
Frank Cook
Kevan Jones
Hilary Armstrong
David Clelland
David Anderson

That this House notes the Competition Commission's investigation into the Civil Aviation Authority's recommendations which will set new charges for flights landing at Heathrow Airport from 1st April 2008; further notes that BMI has put Durham Tees Valley Airport on notice that any significant increases will make it very difficult for the company to operate UK domestic feeder services from that airport and this will have a detrimental effect on the local economy because the route is used by business people to transfer at Heathrow onto international flights; and urges the Department for Transport to consider placing a public service obligation on the air route between Durham Tees Valley Airport and Heathrow to secure the landing slot at Heathrow and therefore preserve this major link to the globalised economy for the benefit of the North East's prosperity.

Very interesting, I wonder what will happen and I wonder how bmi feel about this? Does anyone else think that they don't really want to operate the route and want the slots at LHR for other things?

The writing has been on the wall for this route I think for some time. Bmi obviously are keeping it open to retain the slots, but the way they have messed us around with times of flights is ridiculous.

What they fail to realise is that having the international routes without the feeder routes is not going to help as passengers are not going to use Heathrow from up here. More people will start using the AMS flight, but it screws anyone trying to get to the south of England.

I am not going to battle the western bypass to get a flight south, I might as well just drive south. The railways are OK if going to the centre of London, but I don't work there, always need a car and am not going to hire a car in the centre of London.

I'm puzzled by this obsession with Heathrow. It's a nightmare to change planes at; Londoners suffer overflights from planeloads of people who don't want or need to fly over London; and there are perfectly good alternative hubs, such as AMS. I say turn LHR into a regional airport serving west London and Berkshire, and build a new hub somewhere else - how about Machrihanish?

bmi LHR-TLV

Bmi has announced that it will begin flights from Heathrow to Tel Aviv next year. British airline bmi has confirmed that it will launch a daily non-stop service from Heathrow to Tel Aviv on March 13th 2008. The route will be operated by an Airbus A320 and two classes will be available, with 20 seats in business and 108 spaces in economy.
Bmi said that the route had been planned to ensure connections to various regional airports throughout the UK, including Leeds Bradford, Durham Tees Valley, Manchester and Dublin

Someone in BMI is obviously not very good at geography, Dublins not in the UK

On a seperate note I noticed this morning that Globespan had an Air Via A320 (LZ-MDB) doing their Tenerife run today - it positioned in from Belguim this morning.

Good to see that when they don't have an aircraft they're not cancelling the routes like BMI Baby did in their closing months...possibly a strong sign that GSM are committed to MME!

On a seperate note, it's the annual Lapland flight tomorrow - let's hope it's full!!!

I thought the A320 arrived from Varna in Bulgaria?

Apparently it is due to the other 733 being late back off maintenance so they keep pinching ours?!

The First Choice flight to Lapland (Rovaniemi) is Sunday, and it is indeed sold out!

It may well have done mmeteesside - I was pretty tired when I saw the flightplan so it could have been LB-- rather than EB--. For some reason I was sure the Lapland flight was Sat - but either way it's good to hear that it's sold out as I know there were still seats available a 3-4 weeks ago...and only selling for approximately £20 cheaper than Newcastle's flights with TCX.

Why VIA a positioning flight from Varna is about 3 and a half hours. Or is there just nothing sitting around these days to pick up this sort of flight.

I'm guessing they are cheapest? The A320 sits here all day tomorrow and then covers the Sunday to Alicante before leaving on Monday morning. Tomorrow's Malaga is of course done by Glasgow.

It was probably Omni...

Normal travesty that, whilst the US will staunchly use only US carriers for its military requirements, the UK MoD seems to be going out of its way to avoid using UK carriers wherever possible!

I think they put the troop carrying contract out to tender, and Omni won it. I don't think the UK airlines have the spare capacity, especially during the Summer season.

Richard Branson has tried on several occasions to operate the Brize - Falkland Islands flights on behalf of the MOD, but they will not let him.

He offered to operate on a non profit basis for the MOD seats / freight, and he would sell the remaining seats to full fare paying pax, but they still said no.

I know that the servicemen would prefer to travel 18 hours in a virgin B747 / A340 instead of the heaps of the DC10 that is currently being used

What reasons did they give for not allowing him to do this?, I've searched but found nothing.

I think anyone would prefer a nice 744/a340 than a old DC10.

As far as I am aware the reason was never made public. Virgin were trying desperatley in early 2004, when the RAF knew that they could not keep up the Falklands flights on top of the trips to the Gulf.

They refused Virgins offer, then gave the contract to BMI on their A330's for a few month, before Air Atlantic got the contract for their 747, which I believe is the oldest flying pax fit 747 in the world.

Not sure who has the contract now, but whoever it is, use a shed of a DC10

The Omni DC-10s might be sheds inside but they have been reliable all year. I cannot remember a major breakdown or delay.
When they were using a pair in the summer the only delay was waiting for the parking slot at Brize.
