CAT 3

Diversions due to low visibility at Cork are now almost negligible so I can't see any great push for CAT 3. Almost all diversions this year have been caused by strong turbulence or crosswinds on approach.

It's been a while since I looked at the plates but I'm pretty sure the only CATIII runway in the country is 28 in DUB. All that equipment costs a tonne of cash.

Well whichever way you prefer to look at it BFS is used for diversions from the south and vice versa and that's my point nothing else old bean.

Shannon doesn't have CAT III ILS, in the republic only RWY28 at Dublin has. During foggy times at Cork (And Knock) Shannon is 99% of the time the diversion airport, due to Shannon rarely having fog. In the foggy season (Usually Novemberish) Shannon had one diversion to Dublin, and after that you'd be looking at BFS, PIK or MAN/LPL

Would CAT III ILS be possible on RWY 35? I understand RWY35 is currently only CAT I, is there a reason for this?

Runway 35 at Cork has only Cat 1 approach lighting, so major cost to upgrade. Runway 17 has cat 2/3 approach lighting and all equipment so no major expense to upgrade to cat3 from cat2 only move the VOR ?????

AGP was already 8 weekly last year, except I think it was for a longer period.

Lots of cancellations by Stobart due to closure of Runway 25 for the last couple of weeks. I think doing the work at this time of year was a poor decision given the high winds. Would like to hear how this decision was justified.

Because all heavy maintenance is done in the low season (ie winter) because it effects less people due fewer flights.

It should be fairly easy to check the number of flights that used it in any given month in the last few years. I would hope that was done before they decided when the best time to do so.

While December has seen particularly poor weather in Cork, being stuck on a hillside 15km from a huge ocean, with the prevailing wind coming off that ocean, means Cork can get bad weather at any time of year.

Stobart flights only increase marginally during the summer.

Saying that, I don't think it was stupid closing 07/25 for maintenance. The winter winds were unforeseen and flights weren't actually that badly affected.

07/25 would'nt be needed to that great extent during the summer months, also longer days, better weather should mean that the job is done quicker.

Winter winds are strong and westerly every year.

There were over 20 cancellations and about 15 diversions because rwy 25 was closed.

If the works were completed in summer with lighter winds, all airlines could use rwy 17/35 with minimal disruption.

Can someone please link the nature of the maintenance that necessitated the closure of 07/25.

Any further update on the Boston flights, I'm getting a bad feeling that this is another false dawn, hope I'm wrong.

Latest I have is that the US will approve/decline the licence before the end of March! That's very late to put up for sale flights that will commence in May, so either the flights will be delayed or cancelled altogether.
