From Travel Extra's Sunday Supplement:

"Cork to Lisbon will be back for 2014 after all, following its consternation-causing absence off the Aer LIngus schedule last month."

Are they going to operate SNN-FAO or SNN-AGP from Dublin to accommodate that? Can't see how it can be done otherwise.

They could do DUB-LIS-ORK-LIS-DUB either and the W from MUC between 2 May and 19 September still hasn't being released so they may cancel that planned MUC-DUB-MUC flight.

Maybe it's something to do with its expanded summer 2014 schedule.

Management changes

Airport ready for growth to take off | Irish Examiner

Cork Airport has strengthened its management team ahead of its launch as a “standalone business unit” in the coming weeks.

The appointments, and plans to hire a head of aviation marketing, have raised hopes that the Cork Airport Authority (CAA), which is still overseen by the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA), will be able to compete more aggressively for new business and routes.

...
...

Ciaran Carton will join the airport as general manager operations from Terminal 1 Management at Dublin Airport. There will be a new role of head of finance and commercial.

Niamh Flood is taking on the role of head of human resources — with some key HR staff being redeployed.

A head of aviation marketing will also be appointed early in the new year to attract new airlines, develop new routes, and grow passenger numbers.

The current marketing manager, Kevin Cullinane, will take up a new role as head of communications, with responsibility for consumer marketing, social media, and external marketing.

...
...
...

Aer Lingus Regional meanwhile, is due to announce its 2014 expansion plans at Cork Airport tomorrow.

EI Regional

For once I'm quite confident Newcastle may be in the running, picking up where LS will sadly leave off.

Leo Varadkar has just been saying new routes on Morning Ireland.

I largely expect increased frequency on existing routes though.

Demand wise, you'd expect Cardiff and Newcastle to be favourites. Newcastle may suffer because it's not eligible for new route charging [Has Cardiff been gone long enough?]

With the increased oil and gas exploration going on off the south coast, Aberdeen could be a surprise. No massive demand, but potentially great yield for what demand there is. A long flight in an ATR though.

Aer Arann really broke their heart for Cork on this one, didn't they!

What about Luton, Southampton, Brussels (taking over from EI mainline), Nantes?

Whatever the new brand of CAA will bring it will be too late for 2014 which will not be much of a year at Cork.

It will be 2015 before Cork has much chance to get it's ass up off the ground, if then!

Cork has been ran into the ground.

Dublin is grand though.

Well, this is sounding slightly positive. It will take a year before we might see results, hopefully.

@Tom There is no way in this world that anyone would operate ORK-BRU in an ATR.

It's more than 50% longer than ORK-EDI, which is already pushing the limits of comfort for the aircraft type.

You're looking at a nearly 3 hour flight if you use it for Brussels, so aside from the comfort factor, you need to take into account that in the time it takes for a return trip, you could have squeezed in 2 return trips to the UK.

At that rate, you could probably fly to AMS or CDG and get the train to Brussels in the same time as the flight to BRU and the train into the city from Zaventem.

BRU (along with a number of European business destinations) would be best served by a regional jet like the Embraer 170/190 or CRJ 700/900, but at the moment, none of EI, RE or FR operate them and they aren't likely to either, so unless Cork can attract a new carrier, it's not likely to see an increase on 2 weekly in an A320.

Devil

Ha, more codology - Merchant Venturer on the Bristol forum is reporting that the double daily Cork Bristol will in reality be a double daily on Monday and on Saturday. I guess if it does well it can always be increased to double flights on a few other days of the week too!

If I am not careful I could turn into an apologist for Cork Airport too!

I wonder if there is any chance that Michael Cawley may show an interest in the new marketing role at Cork? That would be something, would it not!

ORK-Paris FK50?

aer lingus.................Sir, or Madam, I am in a position to assure you that your memory may very well be flawed in this matter. EI, NEVER EVER, operated a scheduled service between ORK and any Paris airport, with a Fokker 50 aircraft. There may, however, been a once off (maybe twice off) operation with this aircraft type for a charter type operation for a rugby international or some such like. Rennes, in NW France, was as far south from ORK that they operated. Perhaps you travelled on this?.In the 1990s City Hopper (KLM ) did operate a seasonal Cork - Rotterdam FK50 flight but this proved not to be a permanent fixture. I have no idea why this service did not last, but most of us can guess. 840 is fairly spot on when he says that turboprop aircraft have their limitations in terms of range and comfort. Personally, I am a huge fan of turboprops..quieter and more fuel efficient...but about 1.5 hrs is the optimum flight leg, at least in my opinion.

Aerlingus operated a Fokkor 50 between Cork and Paris CDG from 1993 Daily untill a 146 came on the route in 1998. Furthermore KLM City Hopper operated a Schiphol Cork service from 1991 to 1997 on Weekends in Summer untill EI began Daily service in 1998. We also had VLM FK50's operating to Rotterdam and Antwerp on Summer Charters in the 1990's and TAT ATR72's operating as far South as LA Rochelle. There was also the Maersk FK50's operating from Copenhagen and Billund in the Summer of 94.
