The Ryanair/ezy 73's need 200m RVR but the EZY320's can land with 75m so if the ILS had been CAT3 then it might have helped a couple of flights. Does anyone know why it still isn't cat3 yet? I thought all the work was completed a while ago?

Just a question about peeps missing their flight due to being held up at security -
1. If they have checked in, but haven't appered at the gate, then the flight must know they are missing, yet the flight takes off?? Appreciating that there will be delays, can't the flight wait until everyone is on instead of leaving half-empty??
2. If delays at security are meaning people are late for their flight, then x-in desks must open earlier to allow people time?
3. What are the airport authorities doing about it? There's no money from people in a queue. If they are queuing, they ain't shopping.

In answer to your points I'd comment as follows: -

1. The issue of people missing flights has been blown up out of proportion. There were some problems at the start of the summer season but now, when queues do build up there is now much more active management of them including staff identifying and prioritising passengers on flights approaching boarding time.
2. Check in generally opens two hours before departure which should be plenty of time. Also, as more and more people check in on line this part of the process will be increasingly by-passed at the airport
3. Peel are investing £12m in a new, larger security search area which should be ready by next summer. This also includes moving pretty much all the shops airside to help encourage more of them to spend before they fly...!

All very well to increase the size of the security area.

However, if you don't have the staff on duty or sufficient machines in operation to process passengers, it will be status quo for passing through that area..

I understand the new area will have eight scanners - doubling current capacity and with room to expand by a further 25% as traffic grows

Yes, but what about operatives?

Scanners will fill the space, but more staff are required.

No more staff, no improvement for the passenger in time spent getting through security.

...and, of course, as hold baggage gets more expensive, pax will be carrying their maximum cabin allowance with them, which surely will take longer to check?

Nah, the poster is right Peel will love to spend £12 million and not want a return on it by under using the outlay.

Really, over the last month have flown through several UK airports including Heathrow T5 for example where there have been long queues for security and a small number of many scanners working. Why can we expect any different at Liverpool?

I agree whats the point of spending the money on the facilities then underusing them, but that seems to be what happens.

Sorry to disappoint. Plans show two scanners for the priority lanes, and initially six for everyone else. I would also expect that the current practice of utilising the priority lane scanners for 'normal' pax when there are no priority customers in the lanes will also continue...

Suzeman - it seems you are indeed correct and the ILS is approved at CATIII standard. There do, however, seem to be a few last issues over lighting to be signed off before CATIII ops are allowed. Shouldn't be too much longer though by all accounts.

pwalhx - you'll be delighted (or indifferent) to hear that the process of recruiting additional security staff to operate the new scanners is underway...

Passenger throughput rose by over 8% at Liverpool in November.

The increase of over 30,000 brought the total for the month to 363,421.

Shambles

Just got back from AMS on EZY7008. The delay I could handle, it was only just over an hour but what got me was having to sit on the A/C for well over an hour, the flight on next stand was even longer. Why? LPL had not bothered to de-ice the apron so flights could land but near apron was a skating rink so the wait was due to having to wait for stand to be de-iced then groind handling refused to work, quite rightly, as it was unsafe underfoot. Ended up with firemen having to de-ice and clear a path for pax in next A/C to get to the terminal then the head of airport services driving a bus to the bottom of the steps (x1) to get us to the terminal. I got the impression he was far from used to driving a bus never mind in ice conditions and had very little idea of where he was going.. Then we had the baggage fiasco. No information came up on the baggage reclaim screens, the bags going round on carousel we had watched for 10 mins turned out to be some of the people next door, locked door between but viewable through the glass screen.
I realise conditions are harsh but there is no excuse for this lack of foresight, or good practice, to de-ice at the appropriate time.

Thank you LPL for creating a greater delay than the loco I flew with.

I thank the captain for his continual briefings, I am sure he was as concerned as us.

Al,

I can't believe how ungrateful you are. Unlike many thousands of other passengers, you managed to arrive at your chosen destination. The airport remained open when many others were closed. You had some delays, but less so than many other airports such as MAN etc, which had major difficulties because of the adverse weather. You stated that the transport manager was driving one of the buses. I would have been impressed. All hands to the pumps and this particular person was prepared to get his hands dirty to help out. That shows a can do attitude from the staff involved. You should be thanking them, or would you have preferred to have diverted hundreds of miles away. How late would that have made you?

Most airports, indeed transportation within Britain has been severely disrupted because of the adverse weather. This country struggles to cope in such circumstances because these events are comparatively rare. It is not realistic or cost effective to cover for every eventuality in such circumstances. However, some airports, like BHX and LPL have remained open to try get pax, including moaning unappreciative ones, to their chosen destinations and back again. Even the other airports, I am sure, have tried their hardest, some have just managed a bit better than others, and of course the weather affected airports to varying degrees. As I said, you were one of the lucky ones, its just a pity you can't appreciate all of the efforts made by many staff involved.

Its impossible to prepare for every eventuality, unless of course money is no object. Each winter you could provide 500 staff and 50 vehicles, and in the summer staff could be employed to spray cold water on the tarmac and hold up parasols for the pax. That should ensure that most of the eventualities should be overcome. Oh by the way, airport tax will be £1000 per pax please.
