Baggage handlers could disrupt flights for thousands of Liverpool Airport passengers by striking from next Wednesday, August 19. The 150-strong workforce employed by Servisair were balloted on action in a dispute over more than 20 redundancies.
A spokesman for the GMB union said if the indefinite stoppage goes ahead it will affect flights by Ryanair, KLM, Wizzair, Flybe, Thomson and football-related flights. Everton fans could be hit when they travel for their second leg Europa League qualifying game with Czech Republic side Sigma Olomouc which is scheduled to take place on August 27.
The union spokesman said the row erupted over Servisair’s plan to force 51 staff to re-apply for 27 jobs. He said the baggage handlers, who are now termed 'apron hands', transferred from airport owner Peel to Servisair this April.
An airport spokeswoman said the company has not yet been officially advised by the union on what form of action it intends to take. She urged passengers to check-in as normal.

But anyway, as Ametyst2 has already posted, in previous events of this nature, wherever they have happened, some sort of contingency plan has been put into operation to minimise disruption.

Sorry, not quite catching your drift
My last post was a copy of the press article which AFAIK hasn't appeared here and contains more details - if you believe the press - of what is actually going on. Hopefully most readers would have found out a bit more about the situation and can then make intelligent posts about what may happen.
And I haven't posted anything VIA Amestyst. He/she is perfectly capable of posting on their own and so am I. Ametyst's post yesterday noted that in previous disputes of this nature, contingency plans had been used which worked. Yesterday I agreed with Ametyst that this was quite possible having been invoved in a fair few situations like this over the years.
If you are referring to the airport's statement that passengers should check in as normal, there is very little else to be said at this stage as no one knows whether action will actually happen and if so what.
It would be interesting to see if you have anything intelligent to say rather than just sniping at people as your last 3 posts on this discussion have done.

Thanks FR cancelling in MAN a new route is coming (and maybe more?): BRE-LPL 3 weekly (Monday, Wednesday and Fiday) starting 2nd Oct. (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 27th Oct)

Ryanair starting Liverpool to Bremen thrice weekly from 2nd October (an ex Manchester route)and a Liverpool to Agadir service will commence on 29th October, not sure of frequency on latter route

Planning permission has been granted for a £12m extension to the terminal building. The work is aimed primarily at providing a much enlarged security search area and increased airside retail facilities and should be completed, in phases, by October 2010.

About 150 ground staff, including baggage handlers and check-in workers, walked out on strike at Liverpool Airport at 04:00 this morning in a row over 23 job losses. The strike action is indefinite, until the dispute is resolved.
Negotiations between the GMB union and employers Servisair failed to break the deadlock yesterday. The union has been seeking assurances that no worker would face compulsory redundancy under the cost-cutting plans.
Servisair workers at the airport serve travellers on flights with Ryanair, KLM, Wizzair, Flybe and Thomson. The airport said it had been assured that it would be ‘business as usual’. Contingency plans were in place to make sure passengers were not inconvenienced, an airport spokesman said.
Ryanair said that Servisair have a contingency plan in place to transfer passenger's baggage to / from the airport check-in area to its aircraft at Liverpool Airport. However, it has asked that all passengers arrive early. Its airport check-in and bag drop desks open 2 hours prior to the scheduled flight departure time.

The strike at Liverpool Airport could escalate to include 55 fire service personnel, the Post reports. It has not had any affect on flights so far, and the union appear to be looking to escalate the action in order to involve the airport directly.
Around 150 staff employed by Servisair responsible for baggage handling and directing aircraft have been on indefinite strike since Thursday after the company announced plans to make 51 employees apply for 27 jobs. Fire service staff could now be balloted after the GMB union claimed the airport had broken an agreement governing how the strike would be handled.
A spokesman for the GMB union told the newspaper that prior to the strike there had been an agreement that so long as other companies involved in the management of the airport or services did not become involved, then other branches of the union would not get involved. Eddie Parker GMB regional organiser said at the weekend airport staff had been involved in escorting what the union branded as 'scab labour' on to the site.
Mr Parker said the union intended to inform Liverpool Airport that GMB members of the fire service had requested to be allowed to consult on the possibility of balloting for strike action. An airport spokesman denied its staff had become involved in the dispute.

Union realising their strike has no impact so looking for excuses to include others into the dispute and shut down the airport.
If they shut the airport they may find the reduced number of jobs become zero jobs very quickly.

Make sure I was working bl**dy hard, doing the best job that I could so that my application was supported by a good impression to my managers. It's not a good situation, and having been on the wrong end of redundancy I know first hand. But traffic is down alot on last year: what would you rather Servisair did - run at a loss and go under?

Rumour has it that KLM are less than enamoured by the performance of Liverpool.
Not only is it underperforming, what yield it is generating is diluting the performance of the MAN schedule, giving KLM cause for concern on both routes.
They are reducing MAN ops over winter by one rotation per day, but seat count remains constant by using just 734s, 73Hs and 738s.
One wonders what surgery will be done to the LPL schedule for it to become viable.

postscript: I see on another forum, Liverpool has disappeared from KLM's online timetable (still showing in the drop-down options though in the booking engine).

Flights may not appear on the KLM online timetable but they are bookable (as Manchester's flights are ) to the end of July 2010.
I fully expect KLM are in this for the long haul - pun intended. They launched the service in the teeth of the worst recession in over 30 years and I imagine they were savvy enough to appreciate that a) initial loads might be affected by this and b) those loads might come at the expense of their existing Manchester service - which may require "surgery" itself.

The airport is reporting that the dispute between Servisair and it's baggage handlers has been fully resolved and that all industrial action has now ended. Operations are back to normal...

That is good news. Its not often you see a strike actually have an effect anymore. Guess Servisair will be upping their charges then to try and make some money! Ryanair will love that!
