I think I didn't use the correct phrases to try to portray what I'm thinking. If SOU has renovated, then obviously this isn't required anymore. However, if SOU expanded - if possible, I am no expert in the laws of this - to possibly a bigger runway and increased capacity? Then I wouldn't see why anyone other than Ryanair (would would call it Southampton West) would want to go to BOH unless it was cheaper.

For the time being, it looks like things will stay the same. Other than Ryanair returning for a seasonal run.

Pretty sure SOU will never be able to extend the runway...M27 one end and railway lines the other!

There's a motorway running through the centre of Schipol!!

It all comes down to how much money they are willing to spend.

As above , Manchester has a road tunnel under its runways.

THis would be a lot cheaper than putting in a train or Motorway to Bournemouth.

500 meters of cut and cover , job done.

Ryanair have finally started to load there summer schedule from Bournemouth and it very much looks like a 1 based aircraft next summer at the moment

There are a lot of W patterns from other bases and the Canary Islands and Gerona still have to be loaded

Alicante is Daily but 1 less flight to Murcia and Malaga , could all change though knowing Ryanair , fingers crossed for some positive news

Any pics of arrival building?

Does anyone have any images of the progress being made around the airport, in particular the arrivals building?

easyJet v Ryanair @ BOH

BOH airport should be courting easyJet. Look at the routes Ryanair have tried and later cut: Shannon, Frankfurt, Madrid, Valencia, Malta, Glasgow Prestwick, Edinburgh, Nantes, Limoges, Carcasonne, Marseille, Wroclaw etc etc then i very much doubt any other potential Ryanair routes would be more successful. What is left? Rome? Bergerac? Berlin? Fez? Venice? Let's face it there isnt much more Ryanair can do from Bournemouth.

easyJet could easily exploit more 'major city' routes like Barcelona, Nice, Amsterdam, Glasgow etc etc with a smaller a/c type (A319) and perhaps slightly higher fares it would be more viable in my opinion.

EasyJet could operate a smaller aircraft from Bournemouth to match the demand but at present they do not have any Cessna 172s in their fleet!

Please get real about Bournemouth's future. There is a very small catchment area and a terrible transport link situation.

We have friends who live in Poole who can get to Southampton by road in under 40 minutes and by rail in not much longer-direct to the airport. They would not consider Bournemouth at any cost.

Why?

Poole to Hurn = 15 minutes.

Whilst I accept that BOH doesn't have the catchment area to suit EZY and FR I can't understand why somebody from Poole wouldn't fly from BOH if there was an aircraft going where they wanted to go at a time that suited them.

I agree Skywave. In addition the traffic to SOU around the M27 at peak times is bad. But, if coming from Poole shoot down Gravel Hill, Along Ham Lane then past the Dudbury then parley lights, and Bingo. At nite in my wagon Ive done Asda in Poole to parley in around 12 mins. Daytime at peak half hour tops.

As for people living in Poole using SOU I can see theit point. But If BOH had a route they wanted they would use it. Its that simple. Get their quicker and get home quicker.

re BOH routes

read somewhere in the Southampton local press that Flybe's 10,000,000 passenger from SOU ( since starting) was a Dorset businesswomen using the SOU-EDI route. There is definitely a market out there if only it could be tapped into.....

Sark - why on earth would someone not consider using their local airport at any cost?!

I live in Poole and use BOH for convenience whenever possible as on several occasions (when carrying hand luggage only), I've been opening my front door barely 30 mins after the wheels have touched down.

Surely you choose an airport based on route availability then convenience and cost in whichever order is most important to you.

Of course Dorset people use SOU but usually only because there are so few options from BOH. I have to fly to Belfast, Manchester and Glasgow once or twice a year on business and at present go from SOU, but would go from BOH by preference if the route existed. I also have a friend who goes to Paris once a month on business, and again uses SOU but would use BOH!

Well, FR have finally started to upload the Summer schedule for BOH.

BOH based aircraft operating

Ibiza 2 x weekly
Malaga 4 x weekly
Murcia 3 x weekly
Palma 4 x weekly

Non based routes

Alicante daily
Faro 2 x weekly
Pisa 2 x weekly

There are loads of holes in the BOH aircrafts daily schedule, so there must be more routes coming. There are other destinations in the drop down menu that aren't bookable yet.

I think the biggest factor is price. For people east to Bournemouth, you have London Gatwick. For people west to Bournemouth, you have Bristol. Therefore, although the distance is further. For a cheaper flight? I and many others I know do drive further for a cheaper flight.

Believe it or not, but I know a family who went to Manchester to get a very good deal on a holiday to Mexico!

Ryanair, Easyjet, or who ever comes in - must offer good flights, not to places where people will not want to go to. At an competitive price with good times. Some of the Ryanair offerings this year were at the most ridiculous of times and most silly of dates!

There is no reason why people wouldn't use Bournemouth Airport, there just simply isn't enough choice.

Maybe if Ryanair had a smaller plane they could get it to work. As 189 people is a big number from a small airport! Is there even enough seats for 189 in the departure lounge?
