Bournemouth

Bournemouth Airport seems to be very unlucky, with a new terminal, upgraded
I.L.S.no airlines during the winter, still lots of room for diversions.I thought that come the 2012 sailing at Portland that, at least one year they could recoup some of the money spent. Then Poole council are thinking about closing a road
around Wimborne to speed traffic from London and Heathrow to Portland, so perhaps Bournemouth airport will not benefit at all, even though its only a few miles down the road.

Bleak winter

You are joking flyboh - I hope you are because Bournemouth is going to see a major drop in passengers this winter as are many so-called regional UK airports. Lapland flights probably one or two return day trips - gosh that is really going to make up for the Ryanair loss!

Heads in the sand !

Flyboh must work at BOH, and has his/her head firmly buried in the sand with the rest of MAG Commercial and the local Management.

Not just a blip, but a serious, massive drop in Pax numbers, all those concerned should be embaressed !

It would be cheaper to close the Airport for the winter rather than operate what few flights they have !

Is that the sound of heads popping out of the sand for a quick look round

Yes mothballing for winter would be a good idea , get all this construction out of the way ( arrivals ) and hope that 2011 will be a better year .

If it could be shutdown and planning arranged then also sort out the access roads.

BOH Future

I heard that BOH airport is sitting on a rather large pile of gravel, why not shut the airport permanently, excavate the gravel over the next couple of years & sell it off for a huge profit (like lord Normanton at Sommerly Park Ringwood) then fill in the hole with H2O and re-open it as a water-ski park/entertainment centre for locals & tourists alike.
MOL might still come back as he can also walk on water!!!!

Just an idea

Bring back flying boats, thats what I say

Actually, there is a lot more money to be made from a hole in the ground by using it as a landfill site.

I take it none of you have ever been through a recession before.

Welcome to the real world. As soon as people feel secure that the economy and their jobs are safe then they will start travelling again in the numbers that we had been used too. As was said in one of the responses, passenger numbers are dropping right across the board, not just at BOH. Its also happening in most other EU countries. Spain has seen some hotels not even bother to open for this summer season as the demand is just not there.

Yes, passenger numbers will go down for the months of November, December and January, but then they will be back to normal come February and anyone who thinks otherwise is just scaremongering and basing their opinions on rumour and not on what has actually been officially reported by the airlines using BOH.

MOL Walks on water !?

Excellent post Thaimike !

But I think a few at BOH would quite like to hold MOL under the water for a while, maybe you could use an overweight bag to hold him down.

Flyboh - What recession ?

I admire your confidence, but if you are relying on Ryanair returning as promissed on Feb 1, maybe you can cast your mind back to the 5 / 6 based Aircraft that were coming to BOH !

I hope you are right, but wouldn't want to see the odds.

The moral of the story is
1 Don't trust a word that Ryanair say as they will chop and change at a moments notice.
2 Don't make long terms plans based on Ryanair's statements.

Well, Ryanair are selling seats from 1st Feb onwards so there is some indication that they wil be back. Or are they still not to be trusted ...

BOH future

In response to DILLTHEDOG:
Yes by all means invite MOL to the opening of the water park & do the dirty deed, but you will probably have to find an overweight bag from an another airline as no-one can afford one with Ryanair!!

In response to Fly-boh:
I've worked at BOH for over 35yrs, I've seen recessions come & go, and I've seen plenty of airlines come & go, that's the nature of the beast!!
BOH will probably still be here in 100yrs still just plodding along.. unless you get some go-getters in at the top end & remove those who are just looking for a quite life!!

In response to SKY9 & BOHe-man:
The answer to MOL/Ryanair is.. you know when he's lying his lips are moving!!!

Can I try and calm things down a bit and try to take a reasoned approach to some of the things being said here.

It is easy to blame Ryanair for everthing that is wrong in the world. Its almost a national pastime

Sky9 - The moral of your story is right but if you substitute the word 'Ryanair' for 'a bank', or 'a stockbroker', or 'any company' or 'the Government' I think you will find that the argument holds equally true.

Perhaps a little bit harsh, Dillthedog. Michael O'Leary is an engaging fellow and a very, very astute businessman. Without him there would be no Ryanair. Remember, Ryanair have been operating into Bournemouth for nearly 20 years I think. Probably the longest continous user of the airport and now the largest. How many flights do they have now? How much of the development of the airport is due to that? How many jobs are down to that? How much revenue generated?

Unfortunately I can't cast my mind back to that Can you show me the statement, or press release, or signed contract that states it? I think the supporters of BOH (and I am one of them) have selective hearing when it comes to this sort of thing. The business I am in has many parallels to the aviation sector (but fortunately not so cut-throat). We make plans to develop and expand with the best will in the world. But no one makes that sort of statement. If Ryanair said anything, I imagine it was "We foresee 5 or 6 aircraft IF ..." or "We hope to expand IF ...". And at the time they probably really did foresee that. What no one could foresee was the global recession we are in now. Or Eyjaflof.. Eyyafjok.. that volcano.

Unfortunately, Ryanair are a big company and they use that size quite ruthlessly. But any other big company is just the same. Ask a milk producer what he gets paid by the big supermarkets.

They are also a European-wide company which brings little old BOH into direct competition with many other regional airports all over Europe. That means governments and regional governments which support their local airports and even their airlines with grants and subsidies. Not supposed to happen of course but it still goes on in the rest of Europe while the UK meekly abides by all the EU rules. But that's a separate rant

Anyway, we are not out of the recession yet but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Just that it may be a very long tunnel and when we do get there guess who will still be there - Ryanair, love 'em or hate 'em but BOH needs them.

Ok hands up, I'm as guilty as the next man for having a friendly pop at MOL, it's not that I dislike the man personally or his outfit, but if you're going to shell out 45K or there abouts for a facilities overhaul based on future "predictions" if not promises, then you would at least think about throwing your hat in with someone with a slightly better track record than MOL.
Ok, I totally agree he can't predict the future, anymore than BOH can, & we all know he certainly isn't loyal to anyone except himself, he will go as quick as he came when it suits him, which yes makes him a smart cookie, but that's not what's in BOH's best interests.
The trouble with BOH as it stands at the moment, is that when they arrive at the end of that long dark tunnel, they will not find a bright light & sparkley new future, they'll just find MOL holding a very small candle with a very short wick.
Ok recession or not MAG bit the bullet and spent a lot of money at BOH, and are now in a perfect position to capitalise on their investment, but I really do think they nead to get off their and go find some new airlines & secure a long term future with real prospects for growth, not lose one carrier & lose eveything!!

"BOH need to ....... find some new airlines & and secure a long term future with real prospects for growth."

Oh, if only it was that easy!

I'm sure your suggestions as to who those airlines might be will be music to the ears of MAG - and every other UK airport operator that is feeling the pinch at present.

Flyboh - BOH eman - Express Flight

Well Guys, you may or may not be linked to BOH / MAG ?

and I am sure it is not as easy as Thiamike suggests !

But let's be honest, this winters air traffic at BOH is a Joke and the worst it has been for many years.

Lets wait and see how the CAA Pax numbers compare between regional airports, when they are published. I think they will show that it's not the same at all other airports and BOH will be right at the bottom of the pile !

When Feb comes and Ryanair come back, they will be in a very powerful bargaining position, coincidence ? I think not !

Thanks.. DILLTHEDOG

I'm not naive in thinking that trying to win any new business would be a simple matter in this time of so called recession/hardship, or at any other time for that matter.
But there is a very large question mark hovering over the ability of MAG/BOH marketing team.
We all see & hear of the bad news within seconds of it being released by an airline, local TV & press are tripping over each other to get the latest out to the public, but what exactly is BOH doing to counter this situation.
I don't see or hear of anything that they're planing, now or in the future. I thought they would be shouting from every rooftop what they're trying to acheive, posters stuck up at eye level everywhere I walk, turn a page in any local newspaper & BANG BOH hit's you in the eye, turn on the local TV or radio station & a spokesperson from BOH is singing out it's praises. But NO all seems earily quiet (just like the apron will be come winter)
They may well be doing things behind closed doors & talking to people all over the industry, but the publc at large need to be kept informed of what's going on, at the moment they all think BOH is dying on it's feet & every one is geting ready to keep the tumbleweed under control.
Soon they won't even bother to look at BOH to book a flight because they will presume it's being cocooned for the winter, they will automatically go elsewhere.
BOH need to inject some sort of life back into it's veins & bring about some self motivation.
Don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan of BOH, I've worked & flown from there for 35+ yrs.
Sorry to say this but blaming the recession is just a poor excuse for bad management, I firmly believe that in this catchment area there must be enough willing paying punters who need to fly to work related cities, or go find some winter sun that somebody could work out the logistics & get something in the air.
Were not talking about filling LHR just a few well thought out destinations that people are actually crying out for, but at the moment have to go elsewhere.
I was taught that when the chip's are down that was the time to pull your head out of the sand & your thumb out of your & go do something.

Or am I being Naive?

Thaimike

I wouldn't say you're being naive and your enthusiasm for BOH and your expressed concerns for the current situation are obviously heartfelt.

BUT unless you are actually involved in trying to establish/re-establish routes from any airport you don't realise how difficult it is, especially in the current economic climate. By the way, I don't work for BOH and have no particular interest in its fortunes but I don't doubt the same problems existing there as everywhere at present.

As well as currently being involved in that capacity in France I also know some very professional airport marketing people in the UK and getting airlines to sign on the dotted line is very difficult even after protracted negotiations and is a long process, so you cannot suddenly offer a vacated route to airline B and expect them to jump in with both feet. Generally airlines seem to want time to see how passenger numbers trend once the memory of the volcanic ash problems fade - this having had a greater impact on passenger confidence that is generally accepted in my view. So much air travel is now discretionary, rather than being annual holiday/VFR/business related as in the past, and many services from regional airports serve 'discretionary' destinations. The jury is still out on how well they will perform in an era of austerity.

I don't know how professional the marketing team is at BOH, but I suspect you do them an injustice in the last but one line of your post.
