Yes... the terminal was evacuated in the early hours of the morning after 3 suspect packages were found outside the main entrance. The airport remains closed to all arriving and departing aircraft and passengers are being told to go to the northern side of the airport where temporary reception buildings are being used to house passengers

My family have just rung from the airport, 1044hrs, to say that it has re-opened, and all is looking good again for their Thompson trip to Prague.

From the Bournemouth Echo:

DISCARDED bags of alcohol and cosmetics sparked an emergency evacuation of Bournemouth Airport this morning.

Three suspect packages were found outside the terminal building just after 7am, according to police and bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion three hours later.

It was later revealed that the bags, left near the main doors of the terminal building, contained make-up and alcohol including a bottle of port in bubble wrap.

Police said they would be checking CCTV to find out who left the items.

When the alarm was first raised by airport security staff, the terminal was evacuated and flights put on hold.

All passengers due to be leaving from the airport were advised not to travel to Hurn without checking with their carrier first and motorists were told to use alternative routes. Parley Lane was initially shut to traffic but opened soon afterwards.

Snarl-ups were reported on New Road, Whitelegg Way, Castle Lane West, the A338 Spur Road and the A31.

Passengers were looked after in the arrivals area, which was outside the security cordon.

Airport spokesperson Sally Windsor told the Daily Echo that the airport had reopened around 10.30am.

"Things are getting back to normal," she added. "We are hoping to get the delayed flights away as soon as possible but there may be a knock on effect on some flights. We will keep everyone up to date."

Passengers are still advised to contact their tour operator, carrier or the airport on 01202 364124 or 364125.

another example of taking a sledge-hammer to crack an egg. are we really that terrified that a duty free bag full of alcohol needs to be blown up because its left outside BOURNEMOUTH airport? This is exactly what the terrorists want, all of us acting like lemmings tripping over each other in panic and delaying thousands of people because of 'suspect' ALCOHOL BOTTLES IN A DUTY FREE SHOPPING BAG

Perhaps you should be venting your frustration and anger, like me, at the total pratts who ditched their items where they did, thus causing the problems in the first place; and let's hope they are on CCTV doing it.

At what stage did you know it was a 'Duty free bag full of alcohol', or was this 20/20 hindsight? Perhaps you could volunteer to be the one to check what these 'items' really are.

I'm sure the Bomb Disposal guy on his way from Tidworth was wondering whether this one was going to be 'real' or just another false alarm, but they don't get to do their work sitting in an armchair safe at home. Neither do all the 'hi vis jacket' guys stood in the rain for hours protecting the public from what might just be the latest soft-target outrage.

I think we should cut them a whole load of slack for what is always a no-win situation for the Security personnel.

As a family, we were directly affected by this incident, but it was sorted within a few hours, and now my wife and daughter are sipping mulled wine at the Prague Christmas Market, (thank you chippy 63), and I can get on with the decorating!

a source close to Ryanair has informed me that the booking levels from Bournemouth to Madrid are so good - both in terms of volume and crucially yield that the route is likely to go daily from next summer

It would be great for BOH if this happens, but if you look at the low fare finder on the FR website then you can see that the yield can't be good. Almost every seat is 1p. Loads have been good, but at those prices they should be! Still, hope it happens though

I've always found it a bit strange that an industry which professes to have safety as it's top priority is so economically dependent on persuading people to take inflammable liquids in glass bottles onto aircraft

Taken from the Daily Echo website.

BOURNEMOUTH Airport has unveiled a major expansion plan to deal with an expected three million passengers a year.

The £32 million, five-year scheme is designed to meet a predicted trebling of passenger numbers within a decade.

Plans will be submitted to Christchurch council for approval early next year and the first phase of the work, construction of a new arrivals hall, could be completed by spring 2008.

As well as extending and revamping the terminal buildings, the scheme also includes enlarging the apron, extra car parking, and improvements to the airport access and infrastructure in line with the master plan published earlier this year.

Airport managing director, Peter Duffy, said the announcement of the funding by owner the Manchester Airports Group was a huge vote of confidence in the potential both of the airport and the surrounding area.

Advertisement continued...
He said: "By committing to an investment of £32 million, the group's shareholders have clearly shown their confidence in Bournemouth Airport and its ability to grow so it's important that we start planning for this growth as soon as possible.

"By phasing the work over a four- to five-year period we will be able to build in a logical, cost-effective manner which will match year-on-year growth as it occurs."

Mr Duffy said the threefold rise in passenger numbers would not be matched by a similar increase in flights if the airport could attract airlines operating large planes on medium and long haul services in addition to the current European destinations offered by budget carriers.

He also stressed that the expansion plans included environmental improvements both in the buildings and the services, with additional parking halving the number of car journeys made by so-called "kiss and fly" passengers being dropped off and collected by friends and relatives.

Travelling would also be reduced by attracting local passengers to use Bournemouth instead of London and other airports.

The news has been welcomed by council and business leaders as a boost for the local economy.

Peter Scott, chief executive of Dorset Business, said: "This is another important step towards ensuring that Dorset has the prominence on the national and international air transportation scene that it rightly deserves."

Good news for BOH - although given it's scheduled over 5 years, I question just how 'committed' the figure of £32m is - I'm guessing later stages of development can be 'delayed' if pax do not increase as expected.

This sits interestingly with the sell-off rumours floating round a couple of weeks ago....

I'll believe it when I see it. It will be great to finally see a normal arrivals area - after what, almost 60 years?

yes it is a grade 2 listed building unfortunately. something about the building being the first hangar that Winston Churchill used. Can someone clarify? Bloody ridiculous if u ask me as it is ripe for apron land and extra airplane stands

don't know or care about ASW or EZY but Ryanair will be launching two more destinations come the spring.

Decisions currently being made, but considering Inverness and Liverpool (among others)

GRO - REU distance by road is 185 km or around 2 hours. GRO is north of Barcelona and REU is South of Barcelona.

Barcelona Gerona does very well from BOH, but instead of extra capacity on this sector we think we might be able to get stronger yields on a different route but within close proximity to each other so Reus is definately on the radar for Bournemouth. Aircraft availability is the reason other routes might be brought forward first. In a couple of years Bournemouth will be a base so many destinations will be served from Bournemouth - including Marseille.
