Looking Bleak for SkyEurope

Not looking good for SkyEurope according to this report. I hope you all get fixed up with work elsewhere. Good luck.

Struggling SkyEurope cancels Bratislava, Prague flights
(AFP) – 1 hour ago

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia — Slovak-based airline SkyEurope on Monday cancelled all afternoon flights from Bratislava and all flights as of Tuesday from Prague, both airports said.

"All SkyEurope flights left in the morning. The situation became complicated at about 2:00pm," Zuzana Hornanova from Bratislava's M.R. Stefanik airport marketing department told AFP.

"The airline cancelled all flights until 00.25 am local time (2230 GMT) due to operational reasons," Hornanova said, adding there were about 1,200 Sky Europe clients waiting at the airport.

SkyEurope wasn't available for comment on Monday.

The Ruzyne Prague airport said earlier Monday it would halt all SkyEurope's flights as of Tuesday after the airline failed to pay its debts, the airport spokeswoman Eva Krejci told AFP.

The Vienna airport halted SkyEurope's flights in mid-August for the same reason.

"SkyEurope has been paying for Bratislava airport's service on time," according to Hornanova.

The airline, listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange, said July it had found an investor who would rescue the struggling low-cost carrier that entered bankruptcy protection a month ago.

The Austrian group FOCUS Equity was supposed to invest 16.5 million euros (23.34 million dollars) in the airline, conditional on a successful restructuring process.

The company launched ticket sales for the winter season in July after adding two new Boeing 737-300 aircraft to its fleet.

The carrier announced earlier this year that its business had been badly hit by the global economic slump and that it had had to reduce its fleet to just five planes from the 15 Boeing 737s it operated in late 2008.

SkyEurope, with bases in Bratislava, Vienna, Prague and the eastern Slovak city of Kosice, never posted a profit in the six years of its existence.

Sounds like Bratislava airport may now have a bit of a problem in any future negotiations, with Ryanair being the overwhelmingly dominant scheduled airline

Sad but true; I cannot recall an airline being more determined to avert what was unfortunately inevitable; they fought to the very end.

Sorry to hear of the demise, looks like my stag trip to Bratislava was meant to be as I beat the demise of Sky by a few weeks.

On that subject Roy Hudd wrote

Myself and 8 friends visited on my stag night, we had some drink but didn't binge drink, I don't think we were horrid people who polluted Bratislava! We enjoyed the culture of the city, visited the castle, did some shopping, we were impecably behaved but enjoyed ourselves, what a shame when everyone gets tarred by the same brush!

Yeah, I also got a sweet private messages from a guy called RoyHudd - check his comment further up, you see what kind of a guy he is.

I also really really hope Wizz will move in! They should open a base in BTS, take the good, hard-working employees from SkyEurope into their team, and don't let the place fall into the greedy hands of Ryanair.

SkyEurope management, you guys leave in shame.

Be reasonable

Errr "Die Sucker!" is no way to refer to a source of employment for many good people, now is it? I refer to a previous posting from Nightfire. Hardly stuff coming from a professional pilot. Jobs are precious in aviation.

As for UK clubbers/stag night behaviour. I have witnessed it in Prague and Bratislava, and it is SOMETIMES terrible. That does not infer that all Brits are badly-behaved, and does not need an impassioned defence from anyone. I did not intend to tar everyone with the same brush. Apologies there.

Matters closed.

Legendz,

I am very sorry skyeurope isn't able to fulfill its commitments.
On a brighter side you may know that the FOs on average have lost 16000 euros in salaries and the Captains like myself about 36 000 Euros since September last year.
We kept on flying with 50% salary for the last year, didnt get any salary since end of May 2009 but the flight crews kept flying, serving passengers with the best of their abilities.
i must say it was difficult last 3 months with poorly maintained air slovakia airplanes where the crews at many occasions refused to fly in order to keep your safety before potential financial help to their company.

I would like to thank all my passengers, it was a pleasure to fly you around.

I will miss Sky europe!

I wonder now what's the best course of action in order to get my money back. Dunno if it's any worthwhile trying to reach them by phone, I think I'm filling a claim with my bank for a non-received service regarding a credit expense, let's hope they return the already payed reserves.

The SkyEurope representative has given the estimated number of tickets sold for flights that will never take place (until the end of next Spring). There is as much as 280.000 such tickets. Only those who have paid by credit card can try to regain the money.

I doubt there are any phones left in the office to be honest. I've heard reliable stories today that certain members of staff were removing anything from HQ that wasn't bolted down in lieu of unpaid wages. From what I've heard the place has been stripped bare.

Skyeuropecapt weren’t you invited? Heard from reliable stories that most of the stuff is moved out, some cpt were so kind to provide the first officers(and other staff) who weren’t in the procession of a big car with their transport services.
In case you think there is something left. I’m sorry; as I heard in these reliable stories they were even scraping the white paint off the walls. Sad you compare them with thieves, I would see it like a cash refund.
