Eastern Airways
Gotta make you wonder about the integrity of the whole operation. Doesn't auger well for sound safety management. Doubt the philosophy of those at the top will change. Doubt that our wonderful regulator will do anything about the situation. All very upsetting for all concerned
Is Eastern currently making or losing money ? I suspect with the strong Aberdeen focus of the airline, and the troubles of the oil/gas industry right now, Eastern is probably at best breaking even and more likely losing money.
It's never a pleasant situation but would people in the know care to suggest things that would have a significant cost-cutting impact and ensure the airline continues to be profitable when passenger numbers are down due substantially to external factors outside Eastern's control ?
Remember - a company has to be profitable long term without needing shareholder bailouts; the alternative is the company closing its doors for good

I remember well a certain Sir Stel... with a similar attitude. As his first brand new Boeings arrived at Luton they were parked up, meanwhile European Aviation and their fleet operated the schedule at considerable cost. He then never took on the 'front end' of his business and the rest as they say, is now history.

Messy
A lot of the ground staff at HUY have been TUPE`d over to Swissport, and by all accounts, this has been handled incredibly badly....still, it got Eastern out of paying any redundancy.

Jamestkirk - Agree with you totally and yes, that has been said to some in the past as you correctly state, as well as the man himself saying at a Base Captains meeting that he wouldn't need any of them in 10 years anyway as the aircraft would be flying themselves by then!
Agree also with your comment about the DFO who is probably one of the main reasons the whole thing hasn't imploded over the last year! The poor guy must spend half of his working day literally at the often incompetent and exasperating decisions made by those around and above him!

Ha.yes, i was there at EA when that golden nugget of philosophy was excreted by RL.
Well if they don't need pilots then they are leading the way to the future with cancelled flights due to lack of crew.
Yes, the DFO was a breath of fresh air there. Supportive, talented and professional. Surprised he is still there as Eastern don't like those qualities in their management.

Quite right JamesT.....you wouldn't believe (or maybe you would) what's been going on the last few months during this spate of redundancies etc. Absolutely no support or professionalism shown at all levels, supervisors upwards. It will be interesting to see how Eastern goes forward, if at all, from now.

Deeply worrying that this sort of thing goes on in a passenger-carrying airline. I do hope CAA Flight Ops have the resources to take a much closer interest in how EA is operating when they're under this kind of pressure.

It was hoped by staff that when Bristows bought 60% of EA that they would bring considerable improvements, but no, obviously the mess they saw proved too big for even them to put right so they just stepped away and let RL get on with it.
NorthSouth - the CAA have had ample opportunity to step in over the last couple of years but they obviously see nothing wrong at EA.

As a first commercial job, EA is a good rung on the ladder. Even with my short time with the company, it was made clear that if you didn't like it then you knew where the door was. When the constant roster disruption, short-notice nights away and self-drive hire cars started to impact my home life it was time to move on.

To this day, I still chuckle to myself when I think of Fat Lad sitting in the Base Captains meeting and tell everyone to expect a nice surprise in their pay following Bristows muti million pound buy in of Eastern.
Context: Eastern had 'enjoyed' the worst T&Cs in the industry and its Crews had to put up with a single 2% pay rise in about 7 years. Crap beyond belief.
So you can only imagine the delight when people eagerly opened their pay slips to find a one off payment of........ £20. And that was 'kin taxed!
Thanks Richard, you tw*t!

Ha. This is bringing back memories.
The pay rise was not Eastern's sense of doing good by the crew.
It was because someone wrote to Bristows under the COBI scheme and apparently gave a blow by blow account of the airline and a prediction of the future
EA were TOLD to do something.
On the free drink in your wages. We all took friendly bets on how much it would be. I though £200. How naive was I.

Well it is just RL being very forward-thinking and having a well thought-out plan for the future - as RAFAT has already commented: "... as well as the man himself saying at a Base Captains meeting that he wouldn't need any of them in 10 years anyway as THE AIRCRAFT WOULD BE FLYING THEMSELVES BY THEN!".
I think the Navy has been developing a drone Jetstream, so pilot shortage is on the way to being solved. Easy.
