OSL
Should come up instantly Marty, so not sure - but a good spot re the route.
Seems bmi are going to target the Norwegian oil market, not unexpectedly. They did say this was a specific market for them.

Less than ideal timings, should be a early and late rotation, out from ABZ at just after 6.00am and a late rotation back into ABZ leaving OSL at around 6pm, avoiding the need for a night stop, the money saved would justify the airfare.
But good luck all the same

Background in Aviation-Not a lot.
Most of her background is bean countering.Working in the Charity sector.......Right!!
I'm sorry but people have to had experience in working at the Airport in some operational capacity, rather than her track record to be credible.
Kind of sums up aviation today.

She's an MD, you don't hire someone with too much operational experience into a management heavy position. It does sound counter intuitive, however the skill sets are quite different. If by bean counting, you mean a sound grasp of numbers, good grasp of P/L, no actual beans clearly, then yes, that's the person you need. An aviation background may also be seen as a hinderance remember.

In my experience of working with MDS etc. with no ATC/Airline/Airport professional knowledge, the problem has been getting highly relevant technical points & understanding through to them; especially when they, somehow, know better !

At least she has local knowledge and knows the problems that Aberdeen faces. The North East of Scotland is undergoing massive expansion with the promise of around 8,000 new jobs in the ABZ and D2 estates alone. Add this to what is happening in Westhill, Kingswells and other areas and it is obvious that the airport is going to struggle to keep up with demand. I only hope that Carol holds sway with her superiors who hold the purse strings because she will need to think of bigger things than just terminal improvements and roads access.

roads access will be solved by the Bypass of course (cough, cough)
That's why they are doing all that building between the Airport and the access to the new road so we won't miss the traffic jams................

bmi
bmi regional: niches and new routes. Newer equipment will be needed soon | CAPA - Centre for Aviation
This bit caught my eye:
The Nordic region is growing in importance to bmi regional, which operated its first charter service to the Faroe Islands on 07-Aug-2013 using Embraer E145 equipment. It also operates the Swedish domestic route Kristianstad to Stockholm Arlanda on behalf of Swedish regional carrier Flyglinjen, using its own AOC and crew, and is seeking similar contract flying relationships with other airlines. In addition, the airline is reportedly discussing potentially launching a scheduled Aberdeen-Vágar service.
Atlantic did try a service a few years back in the earlier years when they thought the Faroese had siginificant oil deposits as an extension of what's west of Shetland. Whether this news is true, it would be a bit of a long stretch in an Embraer. Never say never I suppose.

I mentioned that a while back..I hope they do. The Faroes are a stunning tourist destination.
Vagar is building a large extension.
Just extended the runway, Installed ILS.
And now have two basex A319's. Also they are seeking new carriers.
Ive wanted to visit for a long time. It would be nice if Dsa or Huy did a twice weekly flight there n back same day.
But now in theory , rather than going all the way to stanstead via central london. I could be able to fly to Abz from Huy and onto Vagar.
If they could start codeshares .
The Faroes provide a unique tourist venue and also links to Iceland and smaller airports.
Either way heres hoping they do it.
Id definitely try it.
Question is would Easyjet give it a go?. Im guessing Ryr couldnt as the runway is 1795m long.
Im not sure if a 738 could land or take off there but as an inward tourist route or even competition on the Cph route, And perhaps adding Manchester Or Glasgow or Stanstead or Sen.
Might be interesting times for that airport.
Their new terminal is open in spring.
Good luck to them. And Abz for another potential route

Positive response from Eastern Airways on development of Aberdeen-Stornoway route - Stornoway Gazette
So more talks to beef up Stornoway recently.
Will Eastern do anything this time to acquiesce to the oil workers of the Western Isles, or as before, will nothing change?

airBaltic
From 'Routes Online':
Latvian airline airBaltic will launch a new route between Riga, Latvia, and Aberdeen, UK, on March 30, 2014.
Aberdeen Airport’s Carol Benzie said: “The energy industry will benefit from this route, and many of our business passengers will value this service into Riga as well as the onward connections that serving this hub will provide.
“On top of that, it will be welcomed by our leisure passengers who see Riga as a popular short break destination.”
The Boeing 737 service will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
Seems ambitious both from freq & equipment, but we'll see -- 6mths to go!

Good to see the route firmed up. Attractive lead in fares of just £75 r/t. Showing as a 50/50 split of 737-300/500 so someone, somewhere sees demand.

However I'm not sure the schedule will appeal to the leisure market as much as the airport claims. Not much use for the weekend break market. Possibly just talk to satisfy the morons on Facebook who demand non stop flights to Hawaii and Timbuktu.

the Riga flights are probably more for E Europeans who work offshore - there has been a big increase in their numbers over the past years - especially in the support trades like catering etc
