Excel Airways arrived at STN this morning just before 0300 local time after being diverted from LGW. LGW where using the back up runway so had a reduced capacity.

All premium class carrier Eos Airlines started a double daily London Stansted to New York - JFK Airport. The services will operate six days a week (Sunday through Friday) using Boeing 757s with a seating configuration of 48 passengers in a single class.

Flyglobespan and Air India

Flyglobespan start flights to YYZ as of May. This will make things interesting with Zoom. Zoom operates twice a week into Toronto with a flight via Glasgow. It?s nice to see more long haul routes coming to Stansted. At present the Zoom flights are running full so with extra seats on the route things will be interesting not just between Zoom and Flyglobespan but with full fair airlines like British Airways and Air Canada how will these big guys play their cards.
The news on the grape vine is that Air India is looking at Stansted to increase capacity into and out of the UK to India.

Does anyone know how well Fly Globespan's Athens and Tenerife flights are doing from STN? Im asuming TFS is doing well if they are going to use a larger aircraft on it.

heard a chap talking on the radio for about 10 mins this morning saying about the state of stansted airport early in the mornings , he was saying that he was checking in for a flight to porto about 4 am in the morning and the terminal was packed with thousands of people all in a muddle as to were to check in on the ryanair desks people were arguing with each other and he said it was so cramed with people that four people had passed out, now shouldnt baa ar the airlines do something about it as to oraganised checking in with ropes or something insted of people all over the place and shouldnt they start to get on with extending the terminal to cope with peak time passngers, we experienced it last summer when we went to pisa and it was not a pleasnt experience

On first wave flights, Ryanair check in has been opening 2 1/2 hours before STD to help ease the flow of passengers. The thing is though, its not the airlines fault, its the time it takes to go through security. Today there were 4 que's to go through security which stretched the whole length of the airport, to the main entrance doors. This is of course not to knock the security staff themselves. They are doing everything the possibly can.

If your a passenger, how would you feel if you checked in on time with your airline but still missed your flight because you were stuck in the security line.

I think the main problem in STN is the lack of staff at security the staff there are trying the best but sometimes in the morning there are very few secuirty points open. The reason why is chaos is that there isnt that much space between security and check in decks so as soon as you get a buil up of passengers you queing back to checkin desks and its chaos. The problem is that stn is to small and can cope with the number of passengers. Its alll very well increaseing passenger numbers but if you are not increaseing the size of security or the number of staff you are going to get these problems. Its the same when arriving you have ques for passport control etc etc.

A friend of mine has just been for an intreview at STN as security for BAA,in the interview they talked about the terminal expansion which should start in the next 6 months, which will be to add another 3 check-in isles so thats 6 sides of 14 desks each side or something like that, they also told him that there was over 100 posts available and it was an ongoing thing to get more staff for security.

On another note they also talked about 4 or 5 long haul flights/airlines getting ready to fly from STN, anyone any idea who or where.

You might be right in saying that on the whole there are not enough security staff or channles open during the peak times but im sure the person that was talking about the state of affairs at stn was also talking about the sea of passengers that fill the terminal, these passengers being FR in particular as ryanair decides to cut on cost by having 2 check in agents doing the flight by hand making check in a rather lenghty process and the arguments happen probably because the passengers are hacked off witht the queing and then find themselves looking at the top of the check in agents head as they frantically scribble down the details of the passenger and there boarding cards. You can manage pax flow but not if more people are joining the que for a flight than are leaving it.
So BAA arent entirely to blame for this one although more security channels wouldnt go a miss.

Manual check-in takes no longer than the computer check-in system, the only time manual check-in takes longer is when an airline that uses computers has a computer crash/problem.
I recal checking in for a flight to Rome with Ryanair, all the computers on all check-in desks at Stansted went down for 30 mins, guess who was the only airline still checking in pax.
And another, I checked in with airberlin in may to PMI and the agent
who might have been new spent 5min looking at the seat plan to try and get us sat together, in the end she turned the screen around and I had to help her.

My point is, An airline who uses manual check-in all the time can do the job just as quick as an airline that uses computers all the time.

The problems at Stansted is down to the airport terminal size its just to small for the peak times both check-in and arrivels/baggage reclaim

If you ask me the expansion of the terminal is long over due.

Ive wanted to do this for ages but will never get he chance, i can garuntee you if you gave me a que of 100 pax with the same bags and stuff as a ryanair que i would have it done in no time and there is no way it would be faster than me or many other agents using computers.
Your comparison with ab isnt too valid becuse you had the luxury to get the choice of seats but if you just copmared the basic check in tasks like boarding pass and bag tag then the airlines with computers will win hands down
And maybe your right about the computers crashing but it only happens rarely that it allows the advantages to out way the disadvantages so makes it better for those using computers.
Have you ever done check in? manual and normal??

I have done both for lots of airlines, I find it depends on the check-in agent you get at the desk for quickness, Also the airline you are checking in and the service level of that airline.
Some airlines I have worked for have alot of extra baggage and the bartering takes up alot of time and also some airlines want you to have a quick chat with the pax.
Not blowing my own trumpet but I could do both about the same, I hated nothing more than checking in a flight and I had done 30 pax more than the other 1 or 2 agents, And dont get me started on seat plans.

I take it you are an agent then.
