Bugger. A good friend of mine left Big Airways for XL last year.
Mind you told today that Big Airways are just about to have another staff clearout.

How does the bank that got ‘impatient’ and pulled the plug on XL hope to get it’s money back now, from a company that they may have forced to cease trading?

Do these banking people have for brains? XL's trading for 2009 was already looking GOOD. If they had stuck with it they would have got their loan back. By pulling the plug the bankers get next to nothing, we lose a great airline, and everyone loses their jobs. What a performance.

XL.com website is currently "down for maintenance".

Thoughts with the good people at the company...

From the XL.com website

XL Leisure Group Plc, XL Airways UK Limited, Excel Aviation Limited, Explorer House Limited, Aspire Holidays Limited, Freedom Flights Limited, Freedom Flights (Aviation) Limited, The Really Great Holiday Company plc, Medlife Hotels Limited, Travel City Flights Limited, Kosmar Villa Holidays plc – All in Administration (the Companies)
On 12 September 2008, Alastair Beveridge, Nick Cropper, Simon Appell and Stuart Mackellar were appointed as Joint Administrators of the Companies by the Court.
The Companies entered into Administration having suffered as a result of volatile fuel prices, the economic downturn, and were unable to obtain further funding.
The Joint Administrators cannot continue trading the business and therefore all flights operated by the Companies have been immediately cancelled and the aircraft grounded. Going forward, the Joint Administrators are unlikely to be able to trade the business or operate the aircraft.
All passengers who have yet to commence their travel should make alternative arrangements as detailed below.

Much more detail on XL Leisure Group Plc

Sad news for all on the ground and airside.

Fleet have been grounded according to ITV teletext now. My thoughts are with the countless people who I know work for them.

Much of the capacity will be taken up by the others still in business. I hope you all get re-employed fast.

Certainly one company which I hoped would survive the stupid fuel prices that we're currently faced with. Yet another airline bites the dust...how many more?

XL Leisure Group Plc

It's looking bad. The radio (Radio 5 Live) are saying that they're in Administration, can't find funding, and as of right now all aircraft are grounded and all bookings cancelled.

They're currently saying that they can't actually operate as they are.

Good luck to everyone involved. Crap times indeed.

They're currently interviewing an employee about the situation. I'm sorry to those who are finding out this way.

They're just saying that if you booked directly with the airline, or through the call center, you are NOT covered for a refund through ATOL. Depending on how you paid, you might be able to get a refund via other methods.

They're saying the airline is over £60 Million in the red.

It's just like any other business

I’ve just read that Eimskip - the holding company (is it the holding company?) - has loads of cash. If that’s the case, is it possible for a subsidiary - XL Leisure (parent of XL Airways) - to actually go bankrupt - if the holding company has enough money? Surely it can’t if the holding company has enough working capital?
Depends. If a chronic money loser and current business projections do not show returns commensurate with the (increasing) cost of capital, then the Holding company would not want to inject/risk more capital. It's called throwing good money after bad. It is, however, a strange time to pull the plug now that oil prices, the cause of most of the recent line failures, are hovering around USD100 and showing signs of going down at least to USD85.

Its almost 7 years to the day since I lost my job at Australia's 2nd largest airline, Ansett Australia.
I am so sorry to all those at XL who have lost their jobs and had another chink put into theit Aviation Armour! I can sympathise with you all.
Keep your chin up and dont give in! Just see it as the stepping stone to something better!
I wish you all the very best for your futures.
