That's what it's good at and should concentrate on. Any small airport that offers cheap private flying with little competition and no commercial aviation to deal with, will always figure in the top for private flight movements.
Nice to see it playing to it's strengths and not getting lost in over ambitious plans.

"In terms of total movements recorded Coventry came in 32nd out of 64 airports"
Au contraire Sire!
Coventry Airport finished 2011 ranking in 8th place out of the 64 UK reporting airports for private flight movements, based on CAA Annual Statistics.

Dawdler.
Coventry was bound to beat EMA + BHX on private flights.
How many private planes are based at Coventry probably 50+
There is one private aircraft based at BHX being a Pa-31. There are probably about 20 private aircraft based at EMA.
Coventry still has NO schedule passengers flights on average 3 scheduled freight flights a night. Very little adhoc freight flights as they all seem to be going to BHX at the moment. And very little in the way of Biz jet movements. There being 3 biz jets based at Coventry and on average no more than 4 other biz movements a week.
Personally with the extended opening hours to accommodate the freight flights at night Coventry must still probably be loosing money. Will be very interesting when the 1st set of accounts are published.

Sadly, Coventry will be losing a considerable sum for now with no light at the end of the tunnel. They average under 1 business aircraft departure a day when five years ago it would have been around three a day. They only have Cat 2 fire cover for most of the day and if you want to go to Cat 3 (for say mid-size business jets) you need to give two days notice!
The costs of running an IFR airport through to 2:00am in the morning plus a radar service during the day will be frightening when your core income is merely light general aviation and your fees are relatively low. The freight flights will barely cover the operational costs of going on to 2:00am in the morning.
Before they get back any business avaition and any commercial aviation they will have to revert back to a high cat RFF which will cost several hundred thousand a year for starters.
It doesn't look too promising when a whole lot of infrastructure will need patching up, upgrading, replacing or refurbishment, a never ending drip, drip, drip of hard cash. Not many will have the desire to stick that out indefinately. You need a benefactor with more passion than sense - or Easyjet move in, even then, they wont pay you anything for five years. Needs an injection like Southend and the Stobart Group - £130m to kick start it back to life. Unfortunately BHX is way to close and all that just in time freight is indeed still packing the ramp there day after day for the likes of Jaguar Land Rover etc. They're not going back to Coventry. BHX is also very cheap for landing and parking which just adds to the pain for Coventry.
Very tough nut to crack.

Namely - baby finally aborted, creating some gaps in the market at BHX and EMA.
Some of these will be filled by existing rivals + BE have already pounced on the mixed biz & leisure routes (Scotland, CDG, AMS) that they feel they can turn a profit on.
So, do U2 come back looking for a piece of the Midlands pie (as previously hinted), and if so, they will presumably be talking to all 3 airports (suggestions they could come back to EMA elsewhere).
After all, what they have done at SEN isn't exactly the most ambitious set of new routes, but it is clearly good enough for SEN.
I would still expect that U2 would use CVT more as a bargaining chip than as their preferred choice, but if the price is right, are we at least in with an outside hope?

More in today's local about plans for as many as 14,000 jobs on the airport site, but the only comment on passenger routes is that Sir Peter plans to re-introduce them.
We already know that. The question is, will any airlines accept his invitation?

He knows that passenger services from CVT will never make the airport any money...
I'm not discounting the value in the surrounding land, not to mention what could be done with the site if the airport was closed.
Nor do I think it very likely that we will see commercial flights again, especially as the outside edge scenario of Bmibaby winding down and creating an opportunity for ALL of the Midlands airports to offer a blinding deal to Easy doesn't seem to have come to anything.

RJ Circuits
Back sometime in April, I saw an RJ on final approach to CVT and then come round several times in about 30 minutes. Is someone doing training on RJ's at Coventry?
