In the Limerick-Galway corridor there is a minimum of 300,000 people. You also should get alot of inbound tourism for the west and traffic from North Cork, Tipperary, other parts of Midlands etc.
But, sure, three quarters of all national air passenger traffic chooses Dublin.

And most West of Ireland tourists enter the country through Dublin, too.

Despite huge efforts, for decades, to promote Shannon.

The DAA did very little to promote Shannon in the past. Frequency and choice or routes will ensure that passengers who would probably prefer to fly into or out of the west will end up in Dublin.

Ah, here. Shannon Airport has had a specific agency charged with developing its traffic since 1959, that it has now merged with. No-one can say Shannon has lacked promotion.

Come on SNN had one of FR's largest bases of 6 aircraft back in the day. Incredible for a tiny town.

Most people will always want to visit Dublin so naturally the majority will use it.

What are the SAA ding to promote as it's no exactly paying off either.....

Shannon is Limerick's airport. Are you referring to Limerick as small or trying to cause tension.

Keep on mind that SNN has 3.7 mil pax a few years ago but only 1.7 this year. There is room for growth, TATL realistically make up little of this loss and a motorway to DUB doesn't steal 2million pax.

As for size it is small not trying to cause tension.

Your right about DUB not stealing them, Cork and Shannon were and still are heavily reliant on outbound numbers which have suffered in recent years and while increasing again it will take time. People are still selective on where they go and how frequently.

SNN busiest year was 2006 with just over 3.7 million passengers but started to fall right away even before the economy went down in 2008 which says a lot. I don't think you will see such figures again for a long time if at all.

Cork was growing up until 2008 and it's amazing that SNN had almost half a million more passengers and was the second busiest airport.

The population of Limerick city is roughly 60,000 right? That's about half the size of Swords....

Shannon has a tiny catchment area in the grand scheme of things. It punches way, WAY above it's weight already in terms of Trans Atlantic traffic. It has more daily flights than GLA, EDI, BHX, NCL, BFS and countless far larger cities in Europe. But it just can't match those same cities for flights to other European cities due to not having the catchment, most of those TATL flights are kept running by inbound US pax, we just don't have the same draw in most of Europe because that's not where the diaspora went.

Even 10 years ago, how long and inconvenient a journey would it be to see Belfast, Dublin, Kilkenny, Cork, Killarney,The Cliffs of Moher, Galway etc? Back then it made sense for tourists to fly in to one airport and out from another, now with the new road network on the island that is no longer a requirement, hence no more Lufthansa, Air France etc in Shannon. It's depressing I know but it's the way of the aviation world right now, in this case consolidating at hubs, then increasing frequencies

Plus, is it fair to say the 2006 peak was achieved while the Stopover regime was still in operation, and includes something like 250,000 US troop movements.

And evidence of consolidation is there. In 2014, Cork Airport had about 66% of its peak 2008 traffic, while Shannon had about 45% of its peak 2006 traffic. By comparison, Dublin had recovered to 93% of its peak 2008 performance.

But, in any event, Shannon seems to have closed its mind to such traffic. Recall their breathtaking pettiness when promoting the US Airways Philadephia route. The airline promoted it thus:
US Airways Brings Philadelphia Link Back to Shannon :: Routesonline

<...> said Andrew Nocella, senior vice president, marketing and planning, US Airways. <...> For visitors to Ireland, US Airways anticipates a growth in dual route passengers with people potentially travelling one way on the seasonal link to/from Shannon and the other to/from Dublin. “Beginning next spring, our customers will again have non-stop access to both coasts of Ireland. Customers can begin their trip with the Cliffs of Moher outside of Shannon and end it with the castles in Dublin, seeing all that Ireland has to offer,”
People in Shannon actually found the time in the course of their busy day to change this to:
Latest News From Shannon Airport > Another boost for Transatlantic services as daily Philadelphia flights resume in 2013

Said Andrew Nocella, US Airways Senior Vice President, Marketing and Planning. <...>“Beginning next spring, our customers will again have non-stop access to both coasts of Ireland. Customers can begin their trip with the Cliffs of Moher outside of Shannon and end it with seeing all that Ireland has to offer.
Incredible to think it, but mentioning the existence of Dublin was just too much for them.

All good points above.

But for the sakeof balance I'll try and think positive. SNN's westbound traffic is extremely good for it's size. How to improve on that? DUB is running 7 x B752 and 4 x A332 to IAD, maybe United could be convinced to do IAD at say 3 or 4 x weekly on a B752, especially if the joint venture with EI on ORD and IAD gets binned when EI join Oneworld. The Rhode Island route is pie in the sky with EI on year round daily to BOS, so no matter how much both airports want it I can't see it happening.

We're really limited to routes that can be flown by the 757 here. The fact that Air Transat dropped their single weekly A330 stopover on the way from DUB to YYZ really wouldn't bode well for that being launched any time soon. I can't see any routes not already in DUB being launched by the US majors to be honest.

When the A321 NEO and 737 MAX come on stream I can see opportunities for enticing European locos in on transit routes.

Summer charters IE Air Europa, Iberworld, Thomson, Onur Air to Spain, Turkey etc can be built on.

Try and get OMNI to send most of the troops through SNN again, the majority of flights use Budapest now.

Other than that, we're very reliant on Ryanair.....

You'd be right to point to positives; exactly as you say, the level of trans-Atlantic traffic is very impressive. No-one can deny that Shannon is attracting substantial traffic on its own merits.

I'm sorry, this assertion is wholly inaccurate. According to the 2011 census, the total urban population of greater Swords was 42,738. The population of the Limerick metropolitan area exceeds 100,000. For those who are not aware, the metropolitan figure is important as it includes the sprawling suburbs of the city that are outside the traditional city limits in counties Clare and Limerick.

While I completely agree that the catchment of SNN is indeed small and it certainly punches above its weight in some respects (and comfortably so), it is important to factor in neighbouring tourism and population centres of Galway, Ennis and beyond.

Personally speaking, the average tourist visiting Ireland in search of a bit of diddly-eye, Guinness and leprechauns would do well to avoid spending time in Dublin. Strolling through the city centre on a sunny Saturday this weekend, I was embarrassed to watch masses of tourists and gangs of spanish and italian students navigate the filthy streets and menacing crowds of Temple Bar while being continually harassed for money by junkies. It's just my view, but I really do think the average tourist (British stags and hens aside) would be far better off starting and finishing their journey at a provincial airport.

Every other city is prefect!

Why are they better off starting/finishing at provincial airport there is public and transport and cars available to see where you want to see.....

maybe United could be convinced to do IAD at say 3 or 4 x weekly on a B752
Never be viable, remember SNN-ORD only replaced additional EWR capacity.

Yup, there's the petty, resentful Shannon mindset in full flight.

I suspect it's the key, unspoken, weakness in their business plan. They honestly believe their own propaganda.

Not at all. I just think it's worth pointing out that while Dublin may be the start/endpoint for the vast majority of leisure traffic, it is not necessarily the most favourable.

Aer Lingus A320 on the LHR and ACE routes was the last announcement and the Birmingham service was the last commencement. Nothing planned by the looks of it, haven't heard anything about a Scottish route in a while.

Hats off to Shannon for yesterday's air display. Very well organised, getting a crowd of over 40k in and out of the place without many complaints or disruption. Plenty to see and do. Weather was relatively kind too. Nice to see so many visitors from beyond the region..Off to Bunratty today, included for a 5er!

What's the story with all these Miami Air international flights? Saw one on flight radar that was supposed to land in Chania, circuled & didn't have time to follow until the final destination.

Congrats to SNN passing the 40k visitors last weekend for August Bank Holiday since 2010. Hearing loads on TA flights especially UA are not hectic for this time of year though (summer season).
