Namibia opportunities
 

Hello everyone, I am an european currently working down in Australia as a Charter pilot. I've been thinking about coming to Namibia for a long time, I've read everything I could find here on PPRUNE but I still have a bunch of questions regarding findind a C210 job in Windhoek. Assume that I come there with 450TT of which 250 are Cessna 200 series time. I have CPL (pretty obvious, I know) and NVFR, BUT NO Instrument Rating. What are the opportunities to score a job, and is it possible only if I arrive between October-February or also during other months there are openings? If after I work there for let's say one year, I wanted to get my MECIR, would it be possible to do so at NATA, would you reccomend it as a school?

If having an IFR rating is not a requirement for many companies, it will definitely help you to get in, as you can imagine. There are (not as much as in Maun, but still..) lots of folks looking for jobs...and they probably have an IFR rating...

so the best would be, I think, to do it in Australia, or wherever you want, then come down and make a validation of your foreign license.

I know some operators did hire some low hours, no IR, CPL pilots, but they were namibians (all of them If I do remeber right, but it was a while ago, so I might be wrong).

For your Cessna 200 serie stuff, it WILL definitely help...

Thanks for that. Then if I get there with CASA (australian) CPL AND Instrument Rating, do I have to convert/validate everything before applynig for a position or the employer arranges everything once you are (hopefully) hired?

Operators in Namibia are constantly looking for pilots. There have been quite a lot of mishaps with C210 in the country, so perhaps your services here would help shape things up to better levels.

Hey mate,

there are lots of opportunities for low time pilots. I arrived in Namibia from Australia 2 years ago with just over 300TT and nothing logged on the 200 series. Took a while (2 months) but got a job in the end and had a fantastic time!

2 years ago the best time to arrive was Oct-Nov and then Mar-Jun. Avoid Dec and Jan if possible - dead months.

Just for being sure: do I NEED an IR to have reasonable chance of a job or not? And if yes, do I NEED to convert before knocking the doors of operators or not?

I don't think it's going to make a big difference whether you head there with or without an IR. With your TT, you will be put on the C210 which is operated VFR, it's a SE anyway.

You'll only need an IR if you are for staying a long while and consequently get promoted to twins. Those positions are hard to score, it's mainly because of the politics. Unless things have changed...

I'm wondering......since you have a job in Oz, why the move to a 3rd world country? Not that it's a bad place to fly but I can assure you, there will be things that will raise your eyebrows....

Hi guys I hold a FAA multi-commercial instrument rating with a TT of 260 hours and 33 hours on the twin seneca.I'll be thankful if anyone can help me out with job opportunities in Africa.I was looking at completing my CFI rating at FlightSafety Academy in the States.Would a CFI rating help?
