Flying to Algeria

Has anyone been flying to/from Algeria recently or is there anyone from Algeria in this Forum?

Can anyone confirm what type of altimetry they use at the moment? All the informations I got so far are a little bit contradictory. Do they operate in feet below TL/TA or do they still use meters? Apparently and according to their AIP, Altitudes, Elevations and Heights are in meters...

Thanks!

It is also noted on the Algerian charts (SIA Algérie) that Altitudes and Heights are in meters.

Does anyone have a clue how things actually work there?

Thanks!

They use feet, despite the fact that their charts often show heights in metres. ATC is generally pretty good there... you are welcome to PM if you have any questions about flying there.

I fly there often and can confirm they use feet. Also as above, ATC is very good and helpful. They apply the rulebook very strictly but fairly - no “self positioning for ILS” nonsense which is common further south in Africa - they correctly expect you to fly the full published approach.

Bear in mind that you need HF to go to across the Sahara, or else sign a waiver that they won’t come and look for you if you go missing, or if they do you will be charged a lot of money. DAAT is good for a splash and go but not really advisable for a night stop.

Don't know in what capacity you plan to go there but beware staying clear of the border areas - they are very sensitive. Definitely not somewhere you want to do VFR sightseeing nowadays (although there is a lot to see...). Learned it the hard way eons ago, can't imagine what it can be nowadays.
