Derelicts in Beira Mozambique.

I recently saw some photos shot in Beira back a decade ago. On the old apron to the southeast there were several old jet fighters lingering on both outside and inside some hangars. Scroll down to see them.

My question is to anyone who has been there in recent times. Can you confirm that the carcass with the red cheatline laying upside down in the grass closest to the camera is a former Inter-Ocean DHC-4? Google Earth has it still being there with trees growing around it. There might also be another one upside down next to a compound where there are more derelicts, including a C-47.

I was posted in Beira in 1999, flying for the Red Cross, and those derelicts were there then.

Yes, it was an Inter-Ocean DHC-4 Caribou. Probably still there, though I haven't been back since '99.

The red cheat line was certainly part of the Inter Ocean colour scheme and they were the only ones operating the DHC4, apart from the RENAMO rebels who had a single example which I doubt went anywhere near government controlled airports. Given the age and general condition of the IOA fleet, I doubt they would have been worth much after the war and with the amount of money the owner made he could easily have afforded to walk away from a few derelict airframes.

Nampula was also an aircraft graveyard, mainly military though with plenty of early generation MIGs lying around.

There are a few I'd love to see again but.... some who I doubt have improved with age.............

Well I know V1..ooops from Angola and Burma in the early 90s. I seriously doubt we have improved with age; I certainly have not!!
