Airport Names in Africa
We are all cognisant with the confusion of name changes to airports in Africa. Jan Smuts, Johannesburg International and O R Tambo being an example.
Last time I was in the Johannesburg area, I could find all 3 names on different direction signs within 5km of the airport. But, with Harare International being changed to Robert Mugabe International only on 9th November 2017, is a new record for the shortest duration name about to be set? |
Don't they usually name an airport after a suitably rotted corpse?
In Liverpool they named their airport after the guy who penned the immortal words: Imagine no possessions. |
Your spot on with that prediction. Wikipedia says;
"On 9 November 2017, Harare International Airport was officially renamed after the President of Zimbabwe, to Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. On 15 November 2017, the National Army of Zimbabwe renamed it back to Harare International Airport after seizing power." |
The last time I flew there it was called Salisbury.
|
The last time I flew there, altho’ we parked the aircraft at Salisbury, we stayed across the runway at RRAF New Sarum (1964)
