Tanzanair B200 in the drink....

Word is that a Tanzanair king air ran out of fuel and had to ditch into lake manyara. Pilot and Pax all ok

Foxcotte 25th Aug 2013 21:20

There are some superb pictures of this prang going around. But it's all a bit confusing exactly what happened and why. Does anyone know how close they were to Manyara airstrip when they hit the lake?? I'm assuming that there was a gear failure as well as a double engine failure, or they would surely have targeted landing on the shore or salt flats around. Guess the water made a softer landing. Lucky it's a shallow lake and the plane floated so well!!

Hi Foxcotte,
Thanks for the lovely dinner recently;)

Seven people on board a chartered TanzanAir aircraft from Bukoba town to Dar es Salaam, narrowly escaped death when it made an emergency landing in Lake Manyara, Babati, Manyara Region, on Thursday morning.

The Arusha Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Liberatus Sabas, told the 'Daily News' in a telephone interview that all the six passengers and the pilot were in good condition.
He named the passengers as Aneth Kashasha (51), Mutabihirwa Regina (58), Aloys Mwanga (60), Navuli Meeda (80), Ashura Ruta (38) and Protase Ishengoma (45) all residents of Dar es Salaam.
The pilot was identified by single name as Capt Kondo of TanzanAir with registration number 5H TZW. According to RPC Sabas, the charter plane was flying from Bukoba to Dar es Salaam via Zanzibar.
He said the plane developed mechanical problems in one of its engines and the pilot decided to make an emergency landing on the waters of Lake Manyara. The passengers were rescued by fishermen who rushed them to Selian Hospital for treatment.
The Manyara Regional Commissioner, Mr Akili Mpwapwa, said the incident occurred in the Babati section of the water body striding Lake Manyara National Park. Mr Sabas said three among the six passengers sustained minor injuries.
"We thank God all the six passengers and the pilot are in good condition," he said. Sources said Ishengoma, Kashasha and Mwanga had been in Bukoba to attend the funeral of Joseph Mushumbusi's mother, the late Ernestina Mujwahuzi, who was buried at Kanazi Village, in Bukoba Rural District on Wednesday.
Soon after news of the crash reached Bukoba town, friends and relatives of the passengers on board the plane made frantic efforts to know the fate of their beloved ones, fearing the worst.
The Tanzania National Parks through its Public Relations Manager, Mr Paschal Shelutete said efforts to remove the wreckage from the site were going on. This is the third plane crash to occur in Arusha this year, the first one claimed the life of Mr Joseph Macha, the Arusha prominent businessman popularly known as Bob Sambeke, who crashed while trying to land at Arusha Airport, last April.
Two weeks ago, the flying doctor's plane which was traveling from Enduleni Ward of Ngorongoro District to Arusha via Longido also crashed at Merugway Village in Longido District with six patients and two pilots on board.

fuel exhaustion?

This is a likely scenario...especially considering how stingy this company has been made out to be in the past.

Disturbing how emergency response took over two hours to arrive.

daladaladriver 26th Aug 2013 15:09

Glad everyone was okay. FUnny seeing Kondo's name in the news again, he must have the most crashes out of any pilot in TZ,,, that's probably not a good thing though. I never quite understood how Tanzanair can still be the most expensive charter company, with all these dedicated contracts in place, yet they've had way more accidents than any other operator in TZ. I guess when you have a nice flight center/lobby, it's easy for a customer to overlook important things like safety track records?

brits_in_tz 27th Aug 2013 22:47

probably most expensive because of insurance premiums as well as an aged fleet( exlud 350), I hope Kondo doesnt fly the new King Air, he is currently breaking one every year.

taupip 1st Sep 2013 11:23

Kondo's first double engine failure was in Tabora more than 10 years ago.
I think there were 2 fatalities in that one

taupip 1st Sep 2013 13:17

Tanzanair will probably sweep this one under the carpet like all the others. Just like Kondo's other double engine failure

daladaladriver 2nd Sep 2013 20:42

Tanzanair will always keep him around. He's their go-to-guy when they need a write-off for an insurance claim that will make them some money when the times are tough. This reminds me of that Shorts that crashed short of the runway in Dodoma... the TCAA accident report (it's very short) distorts the true cause by fuel exhaustion when all they mention is a "double engine failure". Let's sweep them accidents under the rug, there's nothing to be learned from them, right?

Tanzania plane crash survivors tell of mid-air horror : News-africareview.com

This article about the crash actually makes me laugh. The consider this pilot a hero. Any look at his history would prove he is negligent and shouldn't be behind the yoke of an aircraft.

The comments below the thread make me laugh even more...

"God is great" "God this" "God that" "God blablalba" HAHAHAHHA :D

daladaladriver 7th Sep 2013 15:25

Tanzanair has already has 6 accidents over the last year. Last time i checked, running out of fuel and then landing in a lake and not killing anyone doesn't make you a hero, rather a lucky idiot. Praise the lord!

Trossie 8th Sep 2013 20:04

CaptZZ, Is that article real? Or is it Africa's equivalent of 'NewsThump'?

Foxcotte 9th Sep 2013 16:44

Perhaps the captain was trying to do a Sullenberger special?? There has to be a reason that he opted to land on a shallow lake rather than on dry ground at worst, or a runway at best. I'm not sure but I don't think that there are too many Amphib Beechcrafts.

And yes, these particular fuel gauges were renowed for not working in Kenya.

LASJayhawk 9th Sep 2013 19:27

PT6's are pretty reliable
200's fly pretty good on 1 engine.
You can crank the gear down by hand.

Me thinks we should not refer to the driver as a pilot.

dakotanorb 9th Sep 2013 20:55

The only time you have to mutch fuel is when you on fire

The book is realy clear on this, if you can not determan the fuel quantety you have to fly with full main or all full.

MrBurberry 11th Sep 2013 04:45

Will you two boneheads explain to me in a light aircraft like this what the significance of fuel gauges are? You have a watch/time piece? You know how to convert Liters to Lbs/hr? You got your answer!

Its to simple to make these calculations in just moments.

Fuel Gauges! Ha!

The famous Kondo has lost his wings. There is justice after all

TCA issued a bulletin to all operators outlining the facts of the Tanzanair Ditching last month. It presents the true facts and they have pulled The So called Hero's license, visiting Tanzanair's base I noticed the atmosphere around the pilots to be very joyful seems like the miracle that took away a dictator, his name has been wiped off the crew board along with all his information, it's like he never existed, the new chief pilot is a Kenyan guy who seems to be serious about polishing up the place. The company isn't bad it just had a few fools in top places but the staff are pretty decent people. I know all the pilots there and they have always been unhappy with the legend Kondo. Well it's time for change lets see what happens now that the king is no more.
