This seems to be coming more common on the 777 - my airline has had a couple of false warning on the triple.

I have a couple of friends on the flight.
As of a few minutes ago they have no idea as to when they might be on their way again. They complain of an appalling absence of communication from the local agent and the Airline. Some passengers even hired a taxi back to the airport in an effort to find out what is going on. Rumours of a "part" having to be brought in (!).

Looks like its still AOG. Passengers were bussed out yesterday evening around 19:30. Then back to the Hotel around 02:00

All pax now being put back on the bus for a hoped for departure mid-afternoon..........

Fire in the hold must be one of the most worrying things when in flight.

Am amazed at lack of interest in this thread...the Asiana 214 is more saucy perhaps but inflight fires are the pilots' worst nightmare whereupon a calm team, swift thinking, decisiveness will save the day.Execution of checklist memory items with speed and precision, knowing the aircraft limitations and what kind of airspace and terrain you are flying over and applying effective CRM..and a wing and a prayer might just get you back on terra firma.

Just smell of smoke is enough to react upon.It is commendable to quite early differentiate between airconditioning system smoke or electrically related or if cargo smoke there are any NOTOC DGR factors to react to and appropriate checklist to follow-minimsing time wastage. The Swiss and Saudia accidents were consumed by the fire due to time wastage.

Expedite and land..just don't break the plane in your rush to get down..and ALWAYS obey the stabilized approach criteria..and make sure you get it right first time! There may noty be a second chance!

All arrived O.K. in Nairobi.

Can anyone shed light on the aiworthiness status of the B777 or whether the alarm was even genuine and why it took so long for Kenya Airways to react to this disruption/incident and what were the hold backs? Any officia comments about what happenned?l

Apparently it was a cargo smoke detector sensor failure leading to a false alarm. According to the local daily papers (if they are to be trusted), the required part was sent from nairobi the next day. It was installed but the Greek CAA would not issue a permit for them to depart because they needed to do an airworthiness flight test first (or something). That was the reason for all the delays. Eventually the governments got involved and they were given clearance to leave. The aircraft involved is already back in scheduled service

I was twice AOG at Greece, it was always a nightmare until you get the paperwork done by "the officials". No wonder in this case everything was messed up as well.
