NNPC Hawker overruns runway Osubi
The NNPC Hawker 4000 5N-NOC, which is operated by Aero Contractors Nigeria, overran the runway when landing on a flight from Abuja on Wednesday 6 February. There were no injuries, but I don't know how much damage the aircraft sustained. However, rumour has it that the newly-installed ILS is now unserviceable as the aerial was damaged. I also haven't heard whether it was caused by an unserviceability on the aircraft.

Prior to installing the ILS, did Osubi have any other Instrument approach? I know it was a VFR airport.

 Why is their so little news available on this incident/accident? Is it the normal "cover up" one normally experiences in this part of the world?:( Surely someone somewhere know what happened? Not even the newspapers, bar one touched this briefly!:ugh:
|
I bet they hope its written off - its the only way they'll get their money back on the steaming heap of crap!:ouch:

Well it's been all over the news here in Nigeria. I dunno if the foreign press carried it or not and frankly speaking I don't care.
I believe Pprune is a rumour network and until someone who knows the inside of the incident puts something up that hopefully will interest you I suggest you write to the moderators here on this website to maybe, start a News forum. LGW Vulture fortunately the aircraft will need some repairs and is not written off. Thankfully NNPC the operators have it well insured and properly managed by their transport department. The Captain a dear friend of mine and his copilot and crew are all OK thankfully and a full investigation is underway. There is or are no cover ups Concerning the incident as it concerns us in this part of the world. Now where was I....... |
Well, what I want to know...
How does one manage to go off the far end of Osubi Airstrip in a Hawker? Did the brakes fail, something of that nature? Not that there's a cover-up, but I bet there's an interesting story behind this one.

Aircraft touched down halfway the runway.

Repair
ZAZOO, glad to hear that the airplane was well insured but with Hawker Beechcraft looking to end factory support of the 4000 as they come out of bankruptcy proceedings who will fix the airplane?
With the damage it is rumoured to have suffered, it seems unlikely that it will be flown out under its own steam. Will it be put on a boat out of Warri Port? Will the cost of its repair make it more financially viable to write it off and get a new airplane? My money's on one of the new Global Vision planes that seem to be the new "in thing" (I know there's only one so far) but I'm hoping for a G650!! NNPC can definitely afford it :) Chuks I guess not everyone is an Osubi ace like you were!! :ok: |
Osubi...
Chuks can tell us about the NAF Hind that destroyed itself in front of his a/c while he was holding position for taxi clearance.
Pieces went flying everywhere, past his a/c, onto the ramp and even over and into the parking lot! He had a grandstand view! |
 Ok, so how badly damaged is this aircraft? All sorts of rumours does the rounds! Does anyone know the extent of the damage please?
|
What's your interest in 5N-NOC.......
|
:confused:Absolutely nothing! Just asking a simple question! Is that not allowed?:ugh:

Scrap it
The aircraft touched down with less than a quarter of the runway length remaining,I do not want to speculate on why the operating crew pressesed on with the landing, the aircraft nose wheel collapsed, radome and some other bodily damage.Methinks extensive repair work will be needed.NNPC might as well collect the insurance money and scrap the metal heap.

Where's Papa Charlie?
That's the old Hawker 800, if memory serves. If it wasn't traded in for the 4000, perhaps they should resort to it?
And let that gentleman stop the wish for a G650. Some of us ARE tired of the spectre of waste and corruption at NNPC, for his info |
NNPC G650

My wish for a G650 was wholly whimsical oooo! :) I agree that there is a lot of unnecessary waste going on! In fact, I think we should extend your argument to say that they should sell November Papa Charlie if they haven't already and fly with the airlines! After all as civil servants why do they need a business jet anyway? Let them fly Arik and Aero like the rest of us hoi polloi :E Personally though, if they did get one......I'd bite their arm off if they asked me if I was interested :ok: |
Gdigba, if it touched down that deep, less than a 1/4 remaining, it is no surprise it went into the bushes! What is the actual length? it used to be +- 6000ft! To land any jet in 1500ft does not sound feasible at all! Why did it happen? Guess, we might never know! A hawker accident at Bangui, circa +- 2006 springs to mind, and this sound very similar!:(

Not so fast...
I have had a few near-disasters of my own, just not at Osubi.
It's just useful to know what happened, that's all. Anyone can screw it up, and I sure have! Thinking that, somehow, it's those other guys who are going to have the accidents is the surest way to have one. That's how I was thinking the first time I had what was, luckily for me, judged an incident. Put it this way, though: I have never had an accident, but, one time, no, one could not use the aircraft again after my (student's) landing! (I was P1 so that was down to me, and fairly so.) I was not there when that Hind came apart, but I do remember seeing the bits scattered all over the place. The thing was, I had been speaking to the Scottish Dwarf not long before, about the daft way they had built a deep monsoon ditch into the intersection between the ramp and the runway. He assured me, in his deepest and most pompous tones, that the design was perfectly sound, since there were yellow stripes showing pilots which way to go! I told him that the design was inherently unsafe, that some pilot would, inevitably, choose what looked like the shortest path, land in the ditch and wreck his aircraft, stripes or no stripes. I assumed it would happen in a tropical rainstorm, when the stripes would be invisible. My suggestion was cheap to install: large signs that would at least visually block the path that led to the ditch. "In one ear and out the other" was the reception given to that by the Dwarf. He knew much better than I, what would happen at Osubi, because it was his airstrip. It was less than a month later that the accident occurred, when it was just that incredible Nigerian luck that nobody was hurt or even killed when that rotor blade came crashing down into the car park. Then they covered the ditch, once it was too late. |
Chuks
By far one of the greatest goofs of safety conscious shell. Had to be the NAF caught out first not the other Niger delta lads. |
NNPC Hawker overruns runway Osubi
Main damage seems to be on leading edge and trailing edge and wing tip for that matter on outboard halve of the left wing. No signs of nose gear collapsing and nose seems to be intact ie. radome and antennas on the the belly. Could not snap a picture but does not look as bad as it sounds although the left wing requires a fair bit of repairs.
