Is a JAR-CPL usable in South Africa?

Hi,

I'm planning a vacation in South Africa this February. I have a JAR-CPL issued from the Swedish CAA and I was wondering if I could do any flying while I am there.

So my question is, would the South African CAA approve my licence and give me the basic PPL rights without the need to fly with a controller and all that?

Are there any flight clubs near Johannesburg or Cape Town that would rent me an aircraft without becoming a member?

I'm grateful for any help on the subject :ok:

You will need a South African CAA 'validation' on your licence (you can't use your JAA licence there 'as is'). Contact the SA CAA for details but expect it to involve a PPL Air Law exam and a PPL flight test... and quite a bit of bureaucracy!

(Hope it's a long vacation!)

Pls differentiate btw validation and conversion. A conversion is much more hassle and you are losing your original licence.
The validation gives you the right to exercise certain rights of your original licence in other country like SA.
If you stick with your original question (flying during holidays) it is the validation you have to go for. Takes you some days to arrange and you should start preparing before getting down there. Check other threads with give you guidelines.
Did it with a Flying Club close to Cape Town. They also offer temporary memberships but you will also find others and also flight schools offering hire and fly. I recommend to do the validation with the guys you want to rent the aircraft from later. Watch out: Some check you out for CAA validation but want additional training for their highly valuable C150s :ugh:
