That's fairly common practise, a national carrier ain't the same animal as THE national carrier, there are a few operators flying the flag there.

So I've been hearing rumours of AFW bringing in a new type of aircraft, possibly Erj190 or A319, to add to its current fleet of 3 Embraer 145's. Can anyone explain the thinking behind this? Unless they intend to fly to Kenya, South Africa or some destination unserviceable with the 145, it seems to me their focus should firstly be on utilizing the current fleet better, unlocking new routes, becoming profitable etc

Also, FLY540 just suspended its operations in Ghana leaving a void of 5 daily flights to Kumasi, surely an opportunity for AFW to increase frequency.

Finally, interesting to see Hainan Airlines (AFW parent company) buying out this Kenyan Carrier. Could this be a second base in the making for AFW?

HNA is not buying out Astral. They have an MoU to take a minority stake. And even that is more likely than not going to go anywhere based on HNA's unrealistic expectations from the deal. But time will tell.

Sean Mendis. I have a feeling you know much about HNA deals in Africa. Can you help tell what it is with them in the AWA investment? They seem to be quite aggressive/ambitious in their approach

Maybe they want to compete with Asky's possible JV with SAA on relocating its hub from Lome to Accra - which is quickly becoming the hub of choice for passengers and operators.

Could be really crowded by the time Fastjet/Fly540 decide to get their act together. I think there is still a need for a proper LCC in West Africa. who knows, maybe the A319 are the beginning of ''LCC or Hybrid strategy phase 2'' for Africa World Airlines??

Africa World Airlines (AW, Accra) has deferred delivery of its maiden A319-100 until February 2015. In an interview with Ghana's BF&T Financial newspaper, Apiigy Afenu, AWA's Chief Operating Officer, said the deferment is a result of the Ebola outbreak currently affecting West Africa.

The Ebola outbreak, which has so far claimed 2'500 lives in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Nigeria, and Senegal, has led to a dramatic decline in demand for air travel in the region as various regional governments have imposed moratoria on flights arriving from infected areas.

The Hainan Airlines (HU, Haikou) subsidiary had planned to use two A319s to expand its regional operations - currently limited to Lagos in Nigeria - to include Abuja and Port Harcourt Omagwa as well as Freetown in Sierra Leone, Monrovia Roberts in Liberia, Dakar in Senegal, and Conakry in Guinea.

speaking to folks in the industry there in accra. heres the buzz

When this airline first started operations in Ghana 3 years ago, there were 4 domestic airlines all of which have suspended operations leaving AWA to have a monopoly on the majority of their routes...

Starbow is the only remaining competitor but a few major incidents and have grounded all but 1 of their old BAE146s and they have had to return their leased Dash 8 Q400 due to inability to pay lease costs. They have only one Captain left on their roster which limits the flights they can do. Rumors are that they will be closing their doors soon as they are burning through mountains of cash and barely surviving.

Meanwhile, Africa World airlines was recently awarded their IOSA certificate and have entered into a codeshare agreement with South African Airways which could see AWA bring in Airbus 319 to connect the region via Accra to Washington DC Dulles airport.

Can anybody on tell whether any of this is true or just the usual smoke mirrors were used to seeing in Africa?

There's not an airline war in Ghana. There's a government initiated buearocratic assault on all aspects of the economy. Very difficult climate to operate in, regulatory wise. This has manifested itself over and over. Small example, look how many different uniforms of officialdom you see at Katoka. Doing what???? Then look at fuel prices compared to Lagos. Nearly double for Jet fuel compared to Lagos.

Any news about AWA recruiting FOs? Any idea about payments?

Thales Coelho, so AWA is currently recruiting Both FO's and Captains. Pilots already type rated on the 145 are highly sought after to meet the growing demand. They are supposed to be bringing in 4 additional ERJ145's to add to the current fleet of 6 with plans to expand rapidly- increasing frequency to Abuja and Lagos and adding new routes to Monrovia later this month, Abidjan, Freetown, Lome Cotonou etc.

Also, there is talk of an Embraer 190 with AFW livery. Some folks in Accra expect to see the plane delivered in Jan or Feb. This rapid expansion will definitely require more recruitment in the months to come.

im a young ghanaian pilot in training and i want to know about AWAs future recruitment plan because i would really like to work for AWA after my training can you guide me on what to do is there a way we can speak directly

From the outside, it seems this africa world airlines is doing really well. They have had a monopoly on all their domestic routes for over a year and they have a very strong presence in the region as well especially Lagos, Abuja and Freetown... One nigerian I spoke to who works there said it is a very super efficient operation which is raking in millions of dollars $$$$ in profit and so they have began rolling out a massive expansion plan and are also looking for brand new E190-E2 or 737Max8 for the next faze....

AWA might be doing well domestically but they have stiff competition in the region. Airpeace just brought in the same E145s that AWA is using... making for some interesting head-to-head competition on similar routes.

I'm currently in the application process for a captain position at AWA. Anyone know what quality of life is like there right now? Well run operation?
