Local pilot pay
Dont know if it was covered before (did not find it) But what exactly is pay for african pilots (locals) in Nigeria. I'm just trying to do a comparison with the pay the regional jet drivers in the US get ( about $20000 a year starting). I was told it was more so please help me out.

The thing that differs in Africa, compared to the USA is that there are so few RJ positions available and many more pilots going for those postions. I know in the States you can get into the right seat on a regional jet on 350hrs total time. Most positions in Africa, would require at least 1500hrs with 500hrs twin time, if not alot more.
For this reason, with the higher hour requirements the salaries tend to be alot higher in Africa too. You probably looking at 2 to 3 times more than what you would earn in the states. |
I beg to differ it might be the case in South Africa, but in other parts of the continent, it is not uncommon for an (local, native) F.O. to get a R.H.S. on a 737 right after coming out of flight school... But the pay would be quite low actually!(cost of life in Africa is less than in the U.S.A. anyway)

When you say the pay will be low is it low but i can survive with it or low i have to get a second job just to survive

If you're a Nigerian living in the states, Arik might consider you for ab-initio training in CRJ or 737.
If you're non-nigerian, you need to have 500 hours on the CRJ to be considered. FO pay is graduated based on hours. Even the lowest pay is better than US regionals. Getting the job is easy. Getting paid is the challenge. |
Non I'm not Nigerian but from the Republic of Niger next to Nigeria. I guess 500 hours on type it is.

You don't have the same structure in Nigeria as the U.S,its quite common place to find say for example,a long haul Captain earning almost the same as an ATR42 Captain. So that regional/major/weight disparity is almost non existent. The division wrt pay is divided between BIZ jets and airlines. Airlines generally 7000USD-9000USD for Captains entry level mthly. BIZ jets generally from 10000USD upwards for Captains, mthly to as high as 15-16k mthly. F/O are generally 50-75% of this figures. Nigeria has always absorbed freshers with just CPL'S straight into heavy metal right seat,i dont see any change to this in the near future. Thats the major attraction for expats. |

Pay is "low" but ok to African standards in most African countries. BUT in Nigeria pay is usually MUCH better. Though you have to cope with other things I do not need to detail.

Any Idea about Freight operations, opportunities and pay packages..
