South African ATPL(A) Expired ...?
I'm current and flying on two other licenses, but my South African ATPL(A) expired on 16.02.2005. Does anybody have any idea what might be required of me to renew it?

You best contact the SACAA licensing department for that for an official answer to your question - as you are flying and have two other licenses current it may just be a recurrent that needs to be done, I hope so for your sake ;)

I do know that after two years, you are required to sit the law and procedures exam again to renew your ATPL.

buddy, ... can you refer me to the legislation requiring that exam there buddy? I dunno. I could be wrong but I can't think of a single other nation worldwide that would require that ...! I have valid US, Hong Kong, and JAA ATPLs, and none of these ICAO countries have any such requirements.

126.9......I hope I am wrong, but I think u might just have to do all the exams again.....exams expire after 60 months of being dormant.
As I said, I hope for ur sake I am wrong, but I will check for you on Monday when I am back in the office. |
I hope I'm wrong!
Hi 126.9,
The CAR's have this to say: Maintenance of Competency for an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) 61.07.7 (2) The holder of an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) who has not maintained competency by passing a revalidation check or an initial licence skills test in the same category of aircraft within the 12 months following the issue or revalidation of such licence shall comply with the following requirements – (d) in the case of a holder of an Airline Transport Pilot Licence where the maintenance of competency has lapsed by more than 60 months, comply with the initial issue requirements of Subpart 61.07 |

Thanks for that. Very similar to JAA/EASA requirements. I wonder if "maintenance of competency" is defined anywhere, or if it could be contested that one has maintained competency by flying full-time on a JAA or other ICAO license? I guess it's worth asking the CAA ...

126.9, I was thinking of renewing my SA ATPL, but was told by a flight school, (who also spoke to the CAA on my behalf), that as I had not renewed my licence in the previous 24 months', I definitely had to sit the law and procedures again. I didn't verify this personally with the CAA myself, but I wouldn't bet against it.(I also have two other current licences.)
It's not so uncommon with ICAO, as I know for a fact New Zealand also requires a resit of the law exam, if the licence has been dormant for over 5 years'. |

I think 5 years is not uncommon for drastic action by some Authorities. That said, both ICAO and the JAA allow for some leeway where a pilot has remained current on another licence. I'm hoping someone in SA has the authority to make a decision like that.

126.9.....bad news......after 60 months u most definitely have write the exams over.
If during ur 60 months u had forwarded a letter from ur company with ur proff check or similar, u wud not have had to write the exam, but, u wud only have had to do a flight test. Ur only option is to write a letter to the Director, (commissioner), pleading ur case.....who knows, u might be lucky. Sorry for the bad news. |
Goffel
Thanks for making the effort. I'll do exactly that.
