Conversion of FAA license to KENYAN CPL
 
Dear Folks,

I am an Indian National with 1400 hours total time. 250 on the multi (Beechcraft Duchess).

I also have my cfi, cfii, mei from USA

I want to convert my FAA cpl to Kenyan cpl

I would be grateful if i could get any inforamtion regarding the study material, course outline and the examinations.

The requirements are simple. 200hrs TT, 25hrs multi with at least 15 hours Instrument time (excluding SIM). English Proficiency level 4 or above, minimum 10hrs PIC in last six months. You'll have to do a conversion exam. This is a composite paper with all 8 subjects included, probably the most challenging thing about conversion to Kenyan CPL. There's no syllabus so to speak, but your best bet is to read up JAA ATPL study material (Yes thats right, its mostly from JAA ATP's so its no walk in the park). You'll have to fly a few hours (usually in the range of 10hrs total including your flight tests). You'll need to do a TTR (Technical Type Rating) exam for the aircraft you'll fly. The total cost will be around 500,000 Kenya Shillings (roughly $6,250). You'll also need a Class 1 Kenyan medical.
How exactly are you planning to work in Kenya though, if I may ask. Kenyan work permits are not easy to come by unless you know people in high places. Good luck with your conversion.

Well to tell you the truth I dont have anything in hand at the moment. But i thought if i convert my license a lot could open up. Im ready to go and look for jobs door to door. Are u working anywhere?

As far as the Syllabus is concerned. i guess we also follow the JAA stuff. Being in India I have studied a bit of the course. I will definitely take a note to your advice though.

I do meet all the flying requirements but i might not be recent. The last time I flew was in April last year. But like you said that I will have to fly close to 10 hours so that wont be an issue.

One of my friends who works for RwandAir is sending me some stuff as mentioned:
Performance A
Gas turbine
Conversion and an Air law exam
to show me the pattern of the examination.

But you were mentioning that I have to take just the composite exam and all the subjects would be covered in it. So if you could clarify my doubt regarding that.

Is there any fee for the exam. Whats the duration of the test? Is it subjective or objective? How many times a year is it held? Where can we do it?

Kenyan Licence Conversion
 
Before you go ahead and spend lots of cash on conversions I would check on a couple of things.
If possible get an ATPL before you come over (you almost have enough hours) - it used to be an easy Air Law exam to convert an ATPL rather than a long, costly set of CPL exams. But that may have changed though.

As EK said, getting a work permit in Kenya is NOT easy (understatement!), there are plenty of Kenyans now with pilot licences. You would possibly have a better chance in Tanzania. But as I said try and check it out before you buy a ticket; I think you're wasting your time with Kenya - sorry.

i would just like to reiterate what has been said above.

kenyan work permits are not so easy to come buy. even the companies will most likely not support you to get one...unless you have some very VERY high connections.

Appreciate the info. I am not actively flying at the moment. I am 21 years old and to get ATP on FAA license we need to be 23 years old. Regarding work permits i was told that if the company is willing to hire you. they help you arrange for one. I thought if i get my Kenyan CPL and go door to door meeting Chief Pilots it might help. Looking at the experience i MIGHT land up with something, and if not, having an African License may open up other avenues in Africa for me. They might rate a Kenyan License above the FAA. Thats what i had in my mind

You are a Kenyan citizen it's going to be
impossible to get a job in Kenya.
May be you can try Tanzania..

Very possible to have 1400hrs at 21yrs.i know of kenyans who had there ppl at 17yrs.by 18 birthday 250hrs for the cpl.by 21yrs 0ver 1500 hrs.

Dear Friends,

I got my CPL in 2007. I was 18. And then i did my all my instructor ratings.

I was teaching since oct 08 and was actively flying till may 10.

I have taught close to 25 people for various ratings. so thats how i got a bunch of hours.
