Nobody has had a problem expressing their two cents worth on this forum before, why the silence over this incident. Surely someone has an opinion!!!! Enlighten us

Mentioning the forum on here where the incident is discussed and where a number of photographs have been posted would probably earn you a smacked peepee.

GULF69 13th Jan 2011 06:47

is that the 737 that had a bird strike?

beechbum 13th Jan 2011 08:03

Some pics on other forums that aren't allowed to be mentioned here either :oh:...And I guess would also earn a smack on the peepee...;););)..
Mmmmm what the Captain was thinking is anyones guess!
Gulf 69, two incidents, the 3 point turn episode aswell as the bird strike on the 73 that was flown in to pick up the stranded pax.

I don't think woody woodpecker will appreciate this kind of home invasion by a bird of the genus ferrous aluminious:oh:

Excuse the ignorance but where is HDS. Seen the pics of a 737 parked half on tarmac and half in the veld. Any idea what happened, :ouch:

The airport is AFB Hoedspruit……they landed and missed the correct turnoff/taxiway then continued down the wrong taxi way. The taxiway is a “dead end” for aircraft. The pilot elected to do a 3 point turn using thrust reverse and the rest is history………….the a/c is apparently a “write off” because of all the damage incurred………

saywhat 16th Jan 2011 05:10

Well done.......Guess the brain was not firing on all cylinders that morning......

brunostachel747 16th Jan 2011 05:40

Is that not why they have "follow me cars" at Hoedspruit........:ouch:

divinehover 16th Jan 2011 07:47

As always there's a lesson in this for all of us. There will come a time in all our careers where a situation will arise that will exceed either our or our aircrafts ability. The trick is to call it quits before the situation turns into an incident/accident. The go-around is the most obvious example I can think of. It's only by the good grace of God that I've managed to drag my backside out if some situations that I should never have been in in the first place. I was lucky. This chap wasn't.

ERASER 16th Jan 2011 10:33

Sad part is that the captain is about to retire...what an end to your career.....darkness and rain apparently played a roll in this..........luckily no pax onboard........

Thanks for all the good info people. :ok:

A retired SAA captain was at the helm. Is this the reason SAA retires their pilots when they reach a certain age? Makes one wander how such an experienced captain could make such a blunder. Condolences to the F/O who was probably trying his utmost to prevent the whole thing from unfolding.

We'll speak again in 15 years or so.

Pfft, the F/O got an exciting ride, and learned a lot at somebody else's expense - he doesn't have a tiller, and he couldn't exactly stand on the brakes while they're backing up - all he needed to do to cover his butt beforehand was say, 'Hey Captain, that's a really dumb idea and I recommend you have a rethink!' then sit back and watch the show - awesome! Being an F/O has it's perks you know, you should milk them for all they're worth :)

Here's my rule of thumb though for reversing the -200: NEVER DO IT. I know the manual says you can.....but just don't. :)
