Situation In Lagos
 

Does anyone go to Lagos on charter in the smaller variety of executive aircraft. I am looking for info on handling, accommodation, costs and CORRUPTION, aircraft parking, clearances and all the reat of the C:mad:P that goes with flying into that hell hole.

I suspect not, or else you wouldn't be asking a question here. What is the basis of your last statement or are you just quoting the oft repeated crap. I'm not challenging the statement, just wanted to know if you had any personal experiences to support what you say.

Been there but not in the last 12 months. Been ripped off by the airport authorities in Lagos and Abuja and have stayed a few nights unfortunately. So yes i can make those statements

Since you're familiar with "the crap that goes on in that hell hole", why do you need any add'l info? Im sure you're well experienced to handle yourself in the "hell hole".

Thanks for your reply CJ. It's just that most people I've met say the same things about Lagos/Nigeria without ever having set foot there. Those who have been, tend to tell their stories of woe as current news when they were there last 10-20 years ago.
Can't help you with your specific requests as I only pass through as pax and can say that the airport is a lot different from the late 80s/early 90's when every official in uniform asked for "dash". In the last 3 years, no one has so much as demanded anything from me and I pass through at least 3 times a month. :D

CJ750 I can vouch for what Revnet says re it isn't compulsory to 'dash'. I worked in Nigeria for 17 months from early 2005 and never had to 'dash' anyone to get things done, and my job was about getting things done. If you go to a place expecting to offer bribes you probably end up giving them, but I doubt it will have been necessary.

Nor was I attacked by anyone, ripped off by anyone, or threatened by anyone. Sure I was careful where I went (even if security didn't think so :}) but no more than I would be in parts of London, Manchester, Atlanta, L.A. or any other City in the world.

Suggest your own attitude might be why people don't want to do things for you. Your posts on here portray you as a self-opinionated bigot. If that isn't an accurate portrayal in your opinion, or that of your mum, then you need to look at how you inter react with folks.

Guys all i asked for was current information on Lagos. I have travelled extensively all over Africa and live in Africa so if my pax are worried about their destination then i am entitled to ask for info from wherever i can get it from especially if situations change in cities and countries from day to day.

I do not appreciate the tone of the replies from the above 3 replies and have to ask the moderators if this kind of abuse is allowed.

That is my personal opinion/experience of Lagos. I have flown in there so i can talk from experience. Nov 2007. I do not ask for corruption but general aviation is always seen as a cash cow especially when you have VIP's on board.

you are entitled to your opinion just as i am about the situation in Lagos. When we stop we get charged different prices every time for the same things and a lot of people arrive at the steps with receipt books for a herd of other charges, again not every time. I do not mind paying but they should be consistent and not differ by a huge amount.

You complain about me calling Lagos a hell hole but judging by your comments on the other posting about the APPARENT murder of the expat station manager you say one must be careful in west africa. If it is so great why do you not live there anymore. See you live in the UK.

I don't live there any more because my contract came to an end. If it hadn't I would happily be there still. I enjoyed the people I worked with immensely, and met many others who are also still friends that I stay in touch with. Sure the country has difficulties in its infrastructure, but slowly it is improving.

I come from the UK, have family there still, but I currently live and work elsewhere.

Regarding your points re the inconsistency in charges to be collected. From my experience I suspect that the inconsistency is down to some shifts being more efficient, professional, at collecting the monies genuinely owed. If you are being asked to sign numbered receipts with the Handling Agent, NCAA or FAAN logos on then it is likely that the charges are legitimate.

If you are handing money over without an official receipt then I would ask .....Why??

Anyway, back to the thread. He ask of corruption in Nigeria and some peoples here are offended by him! Get real peoples:

Nigeria ranks 142nd out of 163 countries in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index for 2006. Corruption is endemic at all levels of government and society, and the president, vice president, governors, and deputy governors are constitutionally immune from civil and criminal prosecution.

Here is what Independent Advocacy Project has to say:

"Nigeria Corruption Index (NCI): The highly successful Nigeria Corruption Index was published in 2005 and 2007 with the support of the National Endowment for Democracy. NCI sought to empirically determine the degree of corruption in Nigeria and emphasize its adverse effects on democracy, development and good governance in the country. NCI 2005 and 2007 collated and analysed the responses of ordinary Nigerians on their daily encounter with corruption – for instance who they bribe, how much, and for what. In 2005, the Nigerian Police topped the league table of the most corrupt organizations with incidences of reported bribery standing at 96 per cent. Next was the Power Holding Corporation of Nigeria (formerly National Electric Power Authority, NEPA), and the Customs and Excise Department which posted 83 and 65 per cents respectively. Other corruption-ridden organizations included the Ministry of Education, while at the Immigration and Passport Office, survey respondents reported incidence rate of 63 and 56 per cents respectively. So it seems that Customs and Excise and Immigration which is definitely at the airport as well as police and may be encounter by CJ750 are exceptionally corrupt. Why does some of you think there is EFCC in Nigeria and many ex-politicians is now being investigated and in prison awaiting trial. This is the reality of Nigeria that too many Nigerians still don't want to admit. Luckily there are some enlighten persons which is why it ranks lower in international corruption now, but it is still shamefully high .
